I'm a monk, and a monk only, I have always chosen from the melee classes just to suit my personal interests and play style. I think I'm pretty good, people like to add me to battle.net and I get a lot of invites to groups, but I'm at the act IV wall. Update: Completed game, with a few tweaks and a solid group. Details below.
I thought I would start this thread to critic my build and character stats but also because most threads are on the subject of I am stuck at Act II or Act III or I have finished Inferno. Here people can compare their Act II and Act III builds ready for the next intermediate step before end-game.
At this stage I can solo Act III and group kill Act III but -for whatever reason- I find solo play much easier.
The stats I am showing are primarily for my tank build and i switch to duel-wield, Mantra of Conviction-overawe for 32k base dps in lower Acts and farming. But that's sort of out of the scope of this thread.
It may be that I am a poor player, and I should be kiting more but I would also welcome any discussion on my current stats, highlighting particular issues and low values before I blame the game entirely.
your stats look about right for act 3, buffed armour running with the Enchantress should give you around 8k armour right? Maybe try and push your hp up to 30k but with the mitigation you have it's not critical! Im running with 29k 900 AR 17k DPS unbuffed and around 7k armour unbuffed, so not much different! currently at Tower of damned with stupid affix on Phasebeast elites! DAMNN THEM!!
As far as your build goes, you are missing Blinding Flash with Searing light rune for the 60% reduced hit chance from elites, I'd personally swap out Lashing Tail Kick and try running with the Blind instead. All the best with act III - Monk powah!!
thanks for the feedback - I actually had Blinding Flash with Searing light in a previous build but then i thought why have that when I can have Mystic Ally - Earth Ally in this slot. This skill provides me with the much need 10% health increase and also with an additional 'player' if my logic serves me correctly this is also a 50% reduced hit chance from all enemies (not just elites) as they may attack me or my Ally. Am I right? Furthermore, the Ally provides a reasonable "group" dps increase.
Fast forward to my current build I have removed this skill in place of Lashing Tail Kick in an attempt to mitigate molten and desecrate elites which destroy the melee class.
Update: confirmed in game, there is no substitute for Blinding Flash with Searing light. Although overall support of Mystic Ally sounds appealing, at that critical time when fighting elites (about the only time you're vulnerable/die) Blinding Flash with Searing light keeps you alive nothing else will. Unless you're over-geared in earlier Acts, my build is -just- Act IV ready to play.
Another question, is it possible to get 30k dps in a single wield with the monk and still be Act IV viable? I often look in disappointment at my single wield dps.
I switched back to Blinding Flash with Searing light, you are absolutely right, there is no substitute.
Although with a group have just blown through Act IV without stopping, also completing Diablo. There were a couple lessons I learnt from this. When you get better gear and start farming you can't get lazy with your skills in place of dps and also expect continue to progress in game as tempting as it is. Wind down the dps, know your role and full tank.
Ultimately the 3 other dps (DH, WIZ, WD) in the group helped significantly as we all carried each other through so if your group or a member in your group isn't Act IV ready most likely the entire group will fail (most public games). I beat Diablo solo in an extremely long battle, it looked impressive as I had the previous 5 stacks of valor from the group. Time to install some video recording software and work towards solo killing an Act IV Inferno elite mob.
I also tweaked my key bindings during this run to include a functional hold position button, which greatly improves mitigation of many elite affixes. This is definitely a requirement for any melee class.
