I was going to write a detailed account of the gear road block I come across but in short: RNGesus isn't with me, Kadala is evil, and the cold sentry build better not be a thing of the past by the time I get my bow and quiver...
Anyway! The point of this thread:
T1,2,3,4 I can finish anywhere from 4 to 6 mins. T6 takes me 10-12 minutes. I get 55-65 shards on the lower torments by breezing through, 95-105 shards on T6 but it requires me to be somewhat careful and think.
Simple math kind of indicates I should just grind the lower torments, but I think T6 has a higher leg drop rate than T3 (not sure if it is significant). Which is better?
Well, the increase in mob health goes up roughly 75% per torment. The legendary drop increase from T4to T6 is negligible. If you are looking to farm shards and only shards then you should farm at the torment that is best for you speed wise. For example, if you can clear T4 in 6 minutes, then a 75% increase in time is 10 minutes 30 seconds. So if you can clear T5 faster than 10.5 minutes then it is more time efficient to farm T5, etc.
Myself, I find that I get more shards and legendaries by doing greater rifts. I can run grift 29 about as easily as T6 and I *feel* like I get more legendaries and I know I get more shards. Of course I have to run T6 rifts a bunch because now I am short on mats all the time because of kadala change.
Farm lower difficulties where you can clear stuff fast. We ran endless hours of T1 speed rifts on ros release and it sucks to see people saying that it's t6 or bust. Not talking directly at op but in general, people need to get the idea of "t6 only" out of their heads. If you can clear T5 twice as fast then maybe you are better off farming t5.
Well my gear is "ok" overall, the biggest thing I need right now is rucksack, the Etyru would be a big help too those are the 2 upgrades I'm shooting for. They haven't dropped for me unfortunately so I'm stuck farming shards...
I'll grind some T4 then, I can clear that in 5 mins no problem, thanks!
It sounds like you have M6, but not the quiver and not, say, Tasker and Theo.
Personally, I started playing T6 the moment I got my M6. It wasn't super fast, but it was alright. I also took the opportunity to start leveling my legendary gems, at this point. Those gems will make your clear speed much faster.
If you haven't started leveling your legendary gems, I'd say to focus on Grifts until you get them to around level 25. By that time, T6 should be easy and quick. If you don't have sockets in your jewelry, then either get them or disregard my post.
T6 Rifts have a 100% drop rate for trial keys, which makes them the best choice in the long run for anyone who will be leveling their legendary gems. That said, Jamoose's comment is definitely relevant, and can get you some of the better gear (i.e. M6 + etrayu/krider/nat/calamity) in a shorter time frame. This would then allow you to speed run T6 more effectively (as would legendary gems).
The old rule of thumb was that the optimal farming level was wherever you could just barely 1 shot the weaker trash mobs (2-3 shot the big heavies).
With m6 and the time it takes to place turrets I think you're probably better off a little higher than that. I would probably go for the highest level you can consistantly clear in a rift in under 10 minutes, and keep in mind what psyk just said about trial keys, you can potentially save yourself time later by doing t6 now.
