So I'm not in the beta and I'm hoping someone with access can answer a question. I see that Rapid Fire was changed in patch 10 from 6x speed firing increase to a flat 228% weapon damage. I had read that Rapid Fire was the best single target spell (if allowed to full cast).
Does this mean that Impale now edges out Rapid Fire in single target dps?
First and foremost - Rapid fire did never fire 6 times weapon speed at 100% weapon damage, that would have been nuts. Rapid fire did previously deal 38% weapon damage per arrow. 6 x 38 equals 228. It's the very same damage. The only difference is that the tooltip is simplified.
What the new tooltip doesn't explain, however, is if rapid fire no longer proc spells (as it before did shoot 6 times according to description, now it just deals weapon damage).
As to your comparison between rapid fire and impale i can only say the following:
Impale requires 25 (which will equal about 40 hatred/second with most weapons) hatred and rapid fire requires 10 hatred/second. Rapid fire remains the best single target spell in long fights.
simple tooltips are friggin retarded. "fire at 6x your normal attack speed for 38% weapon damage per shot" and "228% weapon damage" are 2 COMPLETELY seperate things. its like the monks ability Fists of Lightning or w/e its called, the 'simple' tooltip doesnt even say it deals lightning damage, how are new players suppost to know you cant use that on a lightning immune monster?

(this build was before D3 launched... looking back on it now - i had no idea what i was doing)
