What would be better for a Barb who's currently progressing from Grift 46?
Cause I always used Diamonds in my armor and pants, and my Resists were around ±1000. Then I found my Ancient IK 2h and I replaced my Diamonds in my pants with Ruby's.
Then I did another 40'ish (I don't exactly remember) Grift and somehow this went WAY better defensively.
So then I also switched the Diamonds in my armor piece for Ruby's and it went even better.
I also rerolled some %-life stats on my gear pieces to Armor (since I was still around 700-800'ish life) and it just got better and better...
Basically Ruby gems (plain ARMOR gains) went way better defensively as Diamonds did... But can somebody explain me the reason why I should use Diamond gems?
Or even get the all reist stat? What would benefit a Barbarian more? And what would be the ideal range of all resists?
Sorry if this is a noob question, normally I'm not really into Barbarians.
However, some of the questions you raise are not just armor vs all resist but rather mitigation versus life... which is a different story. But if you're purely thinking about those two stats, use the calculator.

I think aLCuiN is saying for chest/pant/belt/shoulder items, it is better to have all resist option rather than armor option (so for other items you should not add all resist or armor because there are better options to add). use rubies for chest and pant sockets and rely on paragon points instead of diamonds for increasing defensive stats.
I am not 100% sure about the following 2 equations but as far as I know the equation for how much AR or armor reduces the damage is
current AR / (current AR + x)
current armor / (current armor + y)
I believe x is 300 and y is 3000 or something... I have to check again.
Anyways it means the more AR or armor you have the less efficient each AR or armor points will be at reducing damage. for str and dex classes since you get a lot of armor from primary stat, you should focus on increasing all resist. For int classes, if your all resists is over 2000, then you should consider adding some armor. However, that is only the case with the item affixes, for the gems I think you always want to use the gem that increases the primary stat.
seems to me the formula is the same for AR and armor with only a factor 10 difference.
They each have dimminishing returns so when you compare your AR*10 with armor its best to increase the lowest.
280 (equals 28AR) armor vs 78 AR is a huge difference. Not only is AR usually lower anyways, even if it is not, it would need to be an enormous amount higher to make the armor beat the AR.
My guess is that it feels like its going better because you kill stuff faster so that they have less time to damage you. ?
10:1 is the ratio but the place holder values are dictated on the class the gamer is using.
Int based 10 AR = 1 armor. this means armor is more value
DeX/Str based 10 armor = 1 AR.
Barbs exclusively hold vit/life % more valuable than elite dmg reduction. because of blood funnel aka "life steal"
elite dmg reduction is worthless IMO because youll either go full dmg with a HF ammy or have an immunity ammy.
You have a higher chance of dying for trash throwing arrows at you than getting 1 shot by an elite affix.

Here's my BN page: http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/profile/Milo-2868/hero/58750282 (currently shows with BK weapons and Avarice band and such for T6 farming).
Chest/Pant/Belt/shoulder ar better thn armor
You should 500+para for def stats and thn chest/pant in ruby.

To find out whether armor or all resist is better, I wrote this little tool a while ago:
http://d3resource.com/mitigation/
However, some of the questions you raise are not just armor vs all resist but rather mitigation versus life... which is a different story. But if you're purely thinking about those two stats, use the calculator.
I find it a bit hard to understand this correctly? Can anyone translate it?
Thnx for this. I will check it out!
