Ok, so do we exactly know what will the benefits of group play be? Like a source to real numbers ex: 15% more drops per player or just a plain reduction in dificoulty if players cooperate good.
Im not a fan of grouping with random people or relaying on too many, so im trying to figure out what would be the benefit of playing in a group of 4 rather then 2?
Edit: don't give me usual "more flexibility and choices because you have more different classes" reply because that's not what I'm talking about here. I'm looking for game mechanics for incenting group play, if there is any.
Enemies get 75% stronger per player, so if everyone is equally skilled the game will generally be easier with more players. There is no other benefit to grouping.
I'm quite shure that thous 75% will apply to HP, and a smaller fraction to damage...
Well any how, if that is all to it, i think it will be harder to work in inferno with a four man group then two or tree. Main reason being the level of coordination needed at all times to avoid geting in over the head.
Monster HP per player:
2 Player - 87.5% (175%)
3 Player - 83.33% (250%)
4 Player - 81.25% (325%)

There are no benefits except faster kill speed and the joy of being social
Hell & Inferno will probably be a bit easier with a premade group that knows how to work to work together.
You could consider playing with friends an increased drop rate if they are willing to give/trade drops they don't need at the time.
This is the big advantage to me. If you play with good trustworthy friends each person has their own loot drop and if something drops that they cant use / don't need they can trade it to a person who does need it. So 4 people working together= greater chance for loot.
The great thing about diablo is you can enjoy the game solo or with friends, neither type of play is required

Yea I'm totally with you on that one. It's common practice for my friends and I to inspect each other and see if an item we got is a clear upgrade. Then we just drop it on the ground, hit numpad "2", and continue on
I proceeded to wright a wall of text, but then i figured out that answer to this (as to the most questions on this forum) question is "Personal preference and play style"...
Any how i still think that two man groups (good class combo's/build's) are going to be more efficient in inferno, because less coordination is needed, and you can focus fire more easly.
Personally I'll be doing mainly 2-player groups with my daughter. Then I can leech off her vastly superior reaction skills.
Out of curiosity sir, dont get me wrong. but i think playing diablo with ur kid is really amazing!
Dont mind me asking how old are you and your daughter?

This is the best way to farm gear.
