It does that because The server check happens before the login so the pw is irrelevant.

I was in before the restart and playing, and over 175000 people were in playing. All the nubs choosing to play a free video game, that will have no intention of ever buying Diablo 3 are crushing the servers. I played thru the beta last night, and again this AM, and was halfway thru when the servers came down. Played with my wife and another friend and we never had any issues to speak of, and I would like to add that Skype in the background for voice chat for the 3 of us was awesome and caused no issues at all.

I'm not sure about that. Wouldn't you copy the ****************** (the asterixis) instead of your password
