They'll use a variety of different lighting throghout any particular level/dungeon, so on.. Certain areas will be darker, not too far from this area you might encounter a brighter area..

Ugh, yes because coloring everything green instead of grey brown is so much better, clearly natural colors are just too boring for some people. Hellgate was filled full of bland, boring and hastily constructed art, there is no way D3 would or should look dull boring and hastily constructed if it used more realistic colors. If your so narrow minded to think that Blizzard are such awful artists that they couldn't make a great looking game that wasn't filled with stumpy caricatured models and silly lighting then thats your own problem.
When was everything colored green ? I only saw one area that had green film. I think your the one with the problem here with all of your dread posts anyhow. Throwing fits because " it looks " like WoW. Plus we have only seen one dungeon that won't even be in the final game, and some kids are throwing a fit on the lighting ? Give me a break. Blizzard already mentioned that areas later in the game would be darker and more dreary which sounds like good game progression in theme, so we will see what they do.
I was really hoping to reply in that massive poll about D3's graphical style but I guess I can stick what I want to say here instead!
I'm really suprised there's such a massive buzz (and a petition against) the current "look" of the game, and we've only had a glimpse at it, I'm not here to troll and say people should stop complaining, but there's plenty of room for some darker environments yet, and to be honest I find the brighter colours refreshing in comparison to Diablo II, which felt a bit monotonous and depressing after a while.
Also, if no-ones pointed this out, surely if you think the game is too bright and too colourful you can just alter it as you please by changing the settings on your monitor? I have done this once with a game I found too bright, you can darken it to an extent and keep the level visable, I'm sure some people who don't like what they see yet could be appeased a little if they tried the game once it's out on some darker and less saturated settings.

Watch the gameplay video again. The entire dungeon the barbarian travels through, without exception, has green/blue sourceless lighting on the floors and objects. This is a retarded technique that has no place in even a single dungeon in the diablo universe.
Edit: Emlee, it would be great if blizzard put a little checkbox in the graphics options: "Diablo style on" or something that got rid of all this shit. But they won't be doing that. Turning down the gamma isn't going to change the saturation, blended textures, garbage scooby doo lighting, blocky environmental objects, fairyland full screen glow effect, etc.

Actually I think the blue is supposed to represent shadow/darkness and the green some sort of lighting.
I don't like it either but I'm not going to tell Blizzard what belongs in the Diablo universe seeing as they own it.
Unfortunately for you angelmaz, they're probably (well, almost definately) aiming for the broadest audience, but they wouldn't deliberately go out of their way to upset fans, since there is literally an army of them. It doesn't make marketing sense. I doubt they designed the areas with a consumer phrase of "Our Diablo fans are going to despise this!". I don't think they predicted a different look would have that much of a different appeal.
I said almost exactly the same thing in this thread:

Yes, money is the reason. If you can't see why every point he made is total bullshit, you're impossibly ignorant. I've come to realize that the only reason diablo 3 looks the way it does is to please the unwashed masses of WoW, who by virtue of their vast worth to the company now control its direction. Everything Blizzard does from this point forth will be to please this new generation of foolish and ignorant gamers, alienating the true fans of the original warcraft series (barring warcraft 3 of course), SC1, and Diablos 1 and 2.
Sad but true

They are aiming to gain the biggest fanbase they can, there will be some casualties along the way but they will profit more from it. If they profit more from it, that means more expansions and patches and updates for those of us who do stick around.
hmmmm extra content goodies, i loved when LoD came out with all the new stuff
Well... LoD to me was kind of a gameplay failure, but it was the thought that counted. They tried to provide us with new content which was a good thing.

The content just needed more testing I think.
I think LoD was actually fairly well done. It was 1.10 that really destroyed the game, with the insane runewords, overpowered synergies, and everyone teleporting. It was nice to laugh at bowazons who had been absurdly overpowered for so long though.

Yeah it wasn't until after 1.10 came out that the game got almost annoying to play.
I love the new style. I didn't much like the horrible darkness to the old diablos, because it was hard to see at times. The new creaminess/non-darkness is superb. The new diablo is going to be fine;it's much too addicting to not play it either way.

readable colors are nice.
The darkness was a big element to the game. And now it isnt. So glad your a new fan of the new art direction, but the many fans of the diablo series are not happy with it.

i felt the more dynamic scripted events and the act in general made up for a bit of D2's lower replay-aibility (for me at least) than the original Diablo.

I think the change adds a much more anxious feel to see the next area. I find the brown and grey quite boring and full of "yawns". It makes me think "Is this dejavu or was I just in this area?"
Rune words brought a fun and entertaining system in Diablo 2 L.O.D. Not only was it good for stats, but it also gave you something to work towards when you first start. Quests where nothing for the online part. It was getting that breath of the dying,or last wish,or even enigma that you felt truly accomplished and happy with your character for the time being.

Sorry,I'll look for something better. At least it's dark blue. When I first joined I had a thing for kirby that's why my name is kurby, and all my text was bright pink-purple. Everyone said OMG GTFO MY EYES HURT.
On topic.... rune words was a great system in Diablo 2 L.O.D. You felt a great sense of finality once you made your full build of super-attack barbarian with fortitude, breath of the dying, and what not.

It's certainly their perogative to fuck up the diablo universe. But that doesn't mean fans need to be happy about it.
