Well the sorcerer in D1 did not have the hat during D1, But he did have the hat while he was posing as Horazon. Horazon is one of, if not the most powerful Vizjerei Mages in Sanctuary. So perhaps the Hat is a way of showing distinction among the Vizjerei Clan.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
classes from d1 made appearances as enemies in d2, it would make sense if it carried over to three too...except for that whole, "me killing him" thing in d2...that could prove problematic
Thats what i was trying to say in my previous post.
I wonder if its an NPC or a playable class.
Probably not Playable class. We have had a different member from a different class each time. D1 was a Vizjerei, D2 was a Zann Esu, there are at least 3 others I can think of. NPC, beyond question.

Probably just an ancient follower of Horazon/the summoner, that wears the same hat... and/or uses similar skills,or, as far as I know, there might be a cult related to horazon/the summoner and just makes them wear the same funny hat and similar robes.

It was theorized, but never substantiated. A wizard of his power and intellect would, and should be hard to kill, even by demons. Also with him a live, we have some side quests in D3.

Side Missions indeed , but I'm still trying to figure out if its the same guy or someone from the same clan because he was the reason we had to go through to tal rasha to find "baal" which was duriel and he was a spirit who went mad.
The Summoner looked like Horazon. That much is pretty much accepted fact. Now since we killed the Summoner and generally speaking characters we have killed do not come back in sequels unless they are the Prime Evils (we kinda need them to be alive, especially Diablo, to continue the story). So we have some guy who looks like another guy that may or may not be dead. It can't be the summoner (which he does look like), so it must be the other guy. Horazon or it is someone of the same power, influence, distinction as Horazon.
Horazon was a renowned Vizjerei mage. Again a well established fact. So if someone as high up the Vizjerei social ladder as Horazon looks like that, it is possible that others look like that too, or that Horazon was just a flamboyant dresser. Tal Rasha, the most powerful mage in existance, didn't look like Horazon (or the summoner), but then again Tal Rasha may not have been of the same clan od Horazon.
It says Tal Rasha was a Horadrim mage. Horadrim is an alliance of mage clans, so there is more that just Vizjerei in the Horadrim.
Either way we are (hopefully) going to get a enemy or NPC out of this character.

Long, long time Diablo fan; short, short time with DiabloFans. USEast D2 Ladder/1.13 Beta: Accnt = ChezPizmo USEast WCIII Ladder: Accnt = TeeheeSprinkles A cool, unrelated video; "Dude Bids 420 on Price is Right" ("420, Bob") "I'm nasty, I'm old and a little bit ornery; I look like Patrick Stewart and sound like Sean Connery." I notice the D3 photo has the right hand up as if holding a cylindrical object (staff).
Blizz did say about the gameplay video that everything in it was chosen very carefully because they are aware that the fans are very meticulous in their inspections... the same should be assumed for all photos and other criterium.

It could be a statue of Horizon, kind of like the three barbs towards the end of D2:LoD

Maybe it is Horazon making his appearance.
I don't think they ever said he was dead for sure.

Actually the robes are the same too basically. Just the blue isn't there for some reason.

indeed
