i wouldn't mind just having a pet as a way to further personalize my character. However, having a pet that actually does something other than being aesthetically pleasing wouldn't fit the Diablo feel in my opinion. Then again it could be an awesome new addition for all I know.
I like the FATE idea of a pet that can carry crap back to town for you to sell it off for cash. However, I don't think the pet should walk around with you all the time. It should just be a mechanism for selling off crap without having to go back to town. It should show up when you whistle for it, and then you load it with crap to carry back to town, send it off, and then the money shows up in your purse automatically.
Wait a minute, why not just enable the mercenarie to perform this task for you? I can so picture giving my mercenarie a task, and sending his ass back to town.. I mean, this woudln't take away from that Diabloish feel for the game, and its logical too; it would sort of add to the difficulty of the game and enchance the gameplay by doing so.. I mean, if they threw in a nice delay between merc going to town, selling items, comgin back, you would have to fight on your own until he comes back.. I think that this would not only add to the game, but further the realism/imersion..

Lace me with the words of destruction and I'll explode, but supply me with the will to survive and watch the world grow.

Ok, but only if there's a slight chance the mercenary will not come back and not give you your cash and make this chance increase with the value of the item.
For example, you give the mercenary a rusty dagger to sell in town, he'll do that as the tiny bit of money he'd earn wouldnt be worth his job but if you give him say 5 pieces of equipment each worth 35000 gold he could think it's worth the risk to sell them all and take the next ship/caravan out of town.
then you could also add some sor of loyalty bar in mercenaries that increases the more time they spend with you and the more you help them out thus the more loyal they are the less likely they are to abandon you with your stuff...
i guess we could also add to that mechanic the option to hunt down your mercenary and get your gold back but only after you kill him/her as a mini boss...this would add further unpredictability to the game...could be cool
any that are posible to be tamed, since there are magic in this game why not, and how to make use of them? im not sure, but im sure blizzard can figure tat out

Well I can't think of any creature that really fits the bill. Most animals big enough to be used as a pet are pretty wild and aggressive in Diablo.

Who would give money to a pet chicken anyways.

I hate the idea of passing through infernal dungeons with pets.
Dont even mention chocobos

omg good idea!!!
But it'd have to be a pet that can be universally used by everyone so a wolf or bear wouldn't make sense.
What kind of animal or creature do you have in mind?
