I am fairly new to this game (got it 3 days ago) so please bare with me if I misunderstand something.
When I began playing the game, my buddy and I decided to start on hard difficulty for an extra challenge. We played for a few hours on this difficulty, and near the end of act 1, we still never went below 80% hp, but we still continued until the middle of act 2. We noticed that we were out-leveling everything and killing any boss or enemy in less than 2 seconds (I am wizard, friend is witch doctor).
After that, we changed the difficulty to expert, and we still don't see a difference. We are now about 10 hours into the game in the beginning of act 3, we are both level 48. We have only gone down below half hp once. I decided to look on some forums to see if others were having the same problem where everything is really easy, but most people talking about it are playing on normal, and people are saying that at the beginning of act 3, you should be around level 34 (averaged from multiple different posts), meanwhile we went into act 3 at level 44. No enemy or boss has taken more than 5 seconds to kill. I can't change the difficulty to master or torment because I haven't reached act 4 or level 60. Is this a common problem, where the game is too easy in the beginning? I have read that the "real game" starts when you reach level 60, so maybe it doesn't matter as much. Also, would having the expansion change this? Is the late game a lot different? I would appreciate any input from more experienced players.
You might be seeing posts about the old ways of the game. Now, monsters level up alongside you, regardless of what act you're in. Before, the monsters in any given area had a static level. Since you're always killing monsters at your level, you're likely to level faster than before. The difficulties you have available are very easy. Once you level cap, you'll be able to use the higher difficulty settings and you'll die. I promise.
Also, the expansion is very much worth it. You'd be missing out on adventure mode without it, which is the most popular game type.
Thanks for the answers, I guess I should just continue until max level.
You guys make it sound like the expansion is key to late game, but what can you do at max level without the expansion (60)? I am unsure of whether I will get the expansion, for I have just bought the game earlier this week.

I think at 60 without the expansion, you can only run Act1-4 story mode. You won't have access to rifts or bounties, or your level 61 skills.
