I find headsets useful as i cant always have my sound up loud at night. Wakes other ppl up and neighbors get cranky.
I like my G35 from Logitech. They fit nice, feel good and don't hurt my ears like headphones do. Sure they aren't as good
as proper speakers but they still sound alright for my needs.

You know its going to be a good day when you enter a corner sideways.
I like steelseries, though I use 5Hv2. Some people say they are better than Syberia, so you might as well check them out. Or maybe 7H, they are better at blocking external sounds. Syberia for $40 is sweet.
Siaynoq and Freddy are right, headphones do break, so you should keep that in mind.
alot of it is personal opinion and what YOU think sounds nice. How much can you yourself notice? To Each their own basiclly.
I sell tv's for a living and everyone has their quirks and each person notices different things they do and dont like. Once person may think object A is better while somebody else may think Object B is better.
Find something that looks and sounds appealing, if you think its worth your money then buy it.
Me personally have used the Diablo style Steel series headset at Blizzcon on more then one occasion and found they sound and feel amazing, Do they seem a little over priced? Yes, but for the design and quality i hear from it, i think they are worth it.
I have a set of Bose 2.1 desktop speakers but i cant exactly crank them at 3am with the kids sleeping while i slay demons. Hence why i have a headset for my PC.

What you're talking about now is usually referred to as "Sound Coloration", basically that the sound is out of balance in some way or another (more bass than normal, more treble, etc.). Some people prefer bass heavy headphones, others don't. But this has little or nothing to do with sound separation (ability to distinguish one sound from another) and sound quality. Multiple other factors come into play as well such as soundstage (perceived depth in the sound) as well as "headstage".
There is a huge difference in sound quality between a $50 headset and a $250 studio headphone and anyone can tell the difference. If you can't, you probably have severe hearing problems (no joke or insult intended).
Same goes with TV's. Some people may like a screen with a certain hint of blue to the colors while others may like a hint of red but fact remains that everyone wants and can appreciate a TV with a crisp and sharp picture. The same is true for headphones.
I guess it would be easier to tell the difference if the source was of high quality. That is when quality earphones really shine. A poorly ripped MP3 file would just sound poor through any earphone. I wonder what sound format Blizzard is using for the in-game music and effects.

Cause if the sound quality were comparable, the headphones might be more comfortable for use at home, while the earphones might be better suited for my travels.

To be honest I can't see the point in an expensive headset for a game like Diablo 3. It's not like sound quality is going to effect the gameplay massively like it would in a first person shooter where you need to hear the faintest footstep/gun shot.
In saying that my experience with headsets is generally you get for what you pay for. Cheaper headsets will break more quickly than the more expensive ones.
I'm currently using the steelseries D3 headset. But I only really got it for the flashy lights/fanboy culture!
Has anyone had any experience with Beats by Dr. Dre?
I realize they are probably overpriced, but I'm considering them + microphone stand as others have suggested. I would really like something that I can wear anywhere I want instead of just around my computer.
Buying "gaming" headsets is a huge waste of money.
be warned if you own a mac pro this mic will not work. Macs have line level inputs and the zalman mic is a mic level signal. so unless you have a pre-amp for it its not going to produce any signal on a mac input line.
I tried to rig this exact thing myself to no avail. Imacs and macbooks have mics built in... though mac pros and mac minis do not.
I agree with you on the quality of gaming headphones... most are cheap hardware with some software enhancements and A LOT of marketing to make them seem like they are going to turn you into a better player. don't buy the hype!

My girlfriend has them.
For an unknown reason they don't work on my computer while they work fine on ipod etc. But let's just say wtf and ignore this, I don't want to say they never work on computers
My thoughts on them:
-first they are overpriced. You'll get better out of sennheiser or other professional audio devices for an equivalent price.
-well like my first point, I feel the quality is definetly not on par with the price. I personally own AT700 headphones and my sound is a lot more clearer for a wide variety of frequencies.
-The sound isolation is good. You won't hear outside noises with them, this is mainly due to them being quite tight on the head and leather pads. I personaly am not interested in that, also it hurst my ears pretty badly after even short sessions because of this tightness+leather pad. In comparison my AT700 is so light on the head I barely notice them.
-Bass is heavily boosted. For me I hate it, I always feel like it is a way to cover poor sound quality for details. But this is a matter of taste, some people like listening to music as if they were in a nightclub...
-Beats looks cool. That is the main point of them, they are tendance. And if you go for them you will buy it mainly to look cool, even though it makes my ear bleed.
Conclusion:
If you want to pour 200$+ in headphones get one of those:
- AT700 Audio Technica (sometimes below 200)
- Sennheiser HD595, HD 598, HD 600 (better if you listen to a lot of music, want better isolation and bass, more pricey)
There are others but you cannot go wrong with these.
I just saw you asked for being able to move with them. The AT700 looks weird and is pretty big so I would rule that one out. The Beats have the advantage of being pliable making it fit in its tiny case. Sennheiser headphones look better than the AT700 but they are not as transportable as the beats.
I don't get the obsession audiophiles have with headphones. In all honnesty why the fuck would u ever wants to use a pair of headphones if you are that into sound and want to pay soo much for it compared to just using speakers which is for most purposes better (you aren't in a studio and need sound canceling and most likely this is the only sound source in your enviourment). I mean I understand that people can't always use speakers but why would you really pay this much for what is essentialy a oh I should prob keep quiet now instead of blasting out music on my speakers.
Yes I know that using skype and so on using speakers isn't great but aprox 98% of the time (and yes I'm pulling this number from nowhere but u get my point) the headset won't be whats ruining the experience because the other guys mic isn't what it should be.
This is not trying to flame the whole wow man you should go for headphones and a mic but let us be honest for gaming the convenience of having a mic on the headset instead of a clip on (got the steelseries v1 and had it for ages which also have a clip on) isn't nearly as convenient. Headsets have come a long way from back when it was a huge difference. Sure there might be a small difference but for the vast majority of people the convenience outweighs the improved sound quality (which for the most parts u need to pay a lot for or else it's just buying a slightly "better" pair of headphones to claim it makes a difference).
Personally I use the Siberia v1 but what I would do is not just rely on what other people say and perhaps go to a store and try them out for fit. Gaming means using them for a longer period of time most likely so they have to fit right else no matter of sound quality can save them. If you use glasses this is especially true or I guess if your head is in any way out of the ordinary
I'll try and answer this to the best of my abilities, having both owned shitty $40 headsets and $1000+ audiophile headphones.
Lets say you live in an apartment building, chances are not all the neighbors will be happy when you crank the volume up to 11 and tear the house down, just like you mentioned. But there are numerous other reasons as to why you would buy expensive headphones instead of speakers. A pair of $1000 headphones provide vastly better resolution and sound quality than a pair of $1000 speakers. Even a pair of $3000 speakers will struggle against a pair of $1000 headphones when comparing quality. In other words, you get more bang for the buck with headphones.
A separate microphone is very inexpensive. There are good Logitech microphones which cost like $30 and give amazing sound quality taking in mind the cost. If you want more expensive stuff with better quality, go for something like a Blue Microphones "Snowball".
You say headsets have come a long way. I say bullshit. A gaming headset for $100-150 doesn't even remotely compare to a "real" headphone for $70. Add to that the facts that were mentioned in a post on the last page (poor build quality), well, you can quickly see that there isn't much that is good with a headset. My oldest pair of headphones is a pair of Sennheiser HD600 which I bought used for $200. They are now 13 years old and look brand new and still sound pretty damn good. I have no headset older than 2 years that is still alive.
For games nowadays though I mostly use some cheap surround speakers because the games I play don't really require amazing sound resolution (Diablo 3 for example). When on skype and playing with friends though, I use my HD600.
I have some AKG - 701's, they are on the pricier end though the resolution is freakishly accurate. Not as good as those senn's i read about on here but hey, they are half the price of those. I equivocate this to high resolution screens, that seems like a worthy investment to most people and the importance of sound is tantamount to visual information.
I'm not a great audiophile, not at all.
I got the ps3 wireless headset a while back, and i must say I'm a fan.
The other guys here will probably offer some higher, better sound quality headsets, but if you're like me and couldn't really care less for the best-most-expensive-sound-quality-that-money-can-buy headset, then they will work fine for you, they're also pretty cheap at 100$, and -for me- they sound really great.
This Question was asked 5 years ago. Its been a very long time. But I will answer this question for those who are still looking for new affordable headsets. After my answer, I think there will not any more recommendation because my recommendation would be final. So those who are looking for under 100 headsets they should prefer Turtle beach Stealth 600 or Logitech g633. Even Astro A10 is also under 60. And for those who are looking for expensive can go for Astro gaming A50 or Logitech g933. If you still need more suggestions then can see this list of top gaming headset 2017.

First post and you link to a website run by you and Amir?
Best gaming headset can be subjective. For some, best means cheapest. For others, best means most comfortable. Then there are those very unique individuals who can somehow tell the difference in sound quality between a $100 headset and a $1,000 one. But if you are like most common sense gamers who just want the most bang for the buck (a good combination of sound, comfort, and durability) then give those HyperX headsets a try and buy something else if you don't like it. After all, it doesn't matter if something is cheap, best looking, or have the best sound quality if you can't stand wearing the thing for more than 10 mins or if the thing breaks after you use it a few times. HyperX, it's the way to go if you want a headset that combines sound, comfort, and build quality. https://www.hyperxgaming.com/us
I own the Logitech G933 for my gaming sessions and I think it's very good. I also use it for some business calls on Skype, Zoom etc. and the quality (speakers AND microphone!) is really very good as well in this use case.

Just to check, is there a significant difference in the sound quality between in-ear earphones and headphones? Was looking at http://www.amazon.com/Shure-SRH840-Professional-Monitoring-Earphones/dp/B002DP8IEK/ref=sr_1_12?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1332671427&sr=1-12 and was wondering if it would be comparable to something like http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Ears-TripleFi-Isolating-Earphones/dp/B0019RBJOE/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1332672101&sr=1-1.
