I got access to the beta for a couple of days and here are my thoughts. This will largely be just a jumble of unrelated things as I think of them.
The game is cool (of course), but the beta is short. It gets boring after you've run through on every class tbh. I only really wanted to play to decide which class I wanted to play at release. By boring I mean, when you 1 shot everything on your 2nd run through, you know you dont get to keep your gear/characters and the same content over and over - imagine if you were given 5 WoW classes at level ~10 or so, and that was all.
The game is really gold-limited, at least in the beta. Stash slots take a large chunk of gold, blacksmith levelling takes a large chunk of gold. I think with 1 full beta run through you may be able to get +14 stash slots and 1 train on the blacksmith, which brings me to my next point..
Crafting is largely gold limited (at least now). My salvage mats keep going up and up but I dont have enough gold to keep crafting items. And it really is like playing the lottery. Getting a class stat for damage can take 1 or 100+ craft attempts. Getting that stat + other "good" stats is really hard. As long as you can kill stuff @ release, I would recommend just saving your gold rather then crafting gear as you go. Perhaps later on once you've maxed your crafters and your stash, gold may feel much easier to come by but I'm not so sure.
I think the best items as you play through release will be a mixture of +class stat, +damage, +gold find, +magic find, probably in that order - at least until NM/Hell when you can no longer kill things/not die or when new good item stats become available. I personally doubt I will craft anything until NM+, and only if I have to.
That's all for now, I'll update/reply to this post if I have any further thoughts.
I would rather gold be worth picking up, and require thought on what to spend it on personally. If gold is worthless, then the economy becomes very stale for new players that don't have exsisting level 60's to find and trade items with.
I agree that the beta loses its luster after multiple runs, but I completely disagree with you about crafting. I've logged about 12 hours of playtime, and I've made enough gold to max out my bank slots, get my blacksmith to lvl 4+ (lvl 5 needing the pages) and I have enough mats to gear out all my characters. And I'm still over 9k gold after that. (9k isn't worth bragging about, but I'm not in a spot that leaves me lacking atm.)
EDIT- If you play public games, the content goes super fast and so does your bank account from all the gold flying into it.
Idk, maybe I'm just unlucky with crafting, but I'm trying to craft like every piece with a decent +class stat. Some of them take me like 20+ tries (which is about 1500 each piece) - trying the higher level ones obviously, with lvl reqs of 11+, which are 150g+ each.

You maxed out all 3 tabs of your bank slots? Isn't that like 50k gold+ ?
Edit: Not that it really matters, you prolly have all of Normal to grab all those tabs, I was just curious.

I'm at work right now, so unfortunately, I can't verify the costs because my memory blows. I'll check later. Remember, my opinions on costs are only regarding what's available in the beta. The lvl 20+ gear has much higher gold costs to craft, so it will get crazy if you make 20 attempts on something you want. I wouldn't waste too much gold crafting for ideal stats at low levels. You'll outgear it so fast from champion mobs and bosses.

Would like to point out that the 5 wow characters is a moot argument, the point of the beta is to clean out bugs and flaws within the game systems, you can do this perfectly well with the current limitations. However since your sole intent with the beta is to decide 'what class to play upon release', you're not exactly doing anyone any favours so enjoy it while it lasts, the beta shouldn't be your own little 'demo'.
I investigated and submitted my findings about the channeled spell bug. I wasn't aware that I was supposed to report bugs here, given that this is a fan site and I obviously wrongly assumed that people here were more interested in information about the game, as opposed to the latest bugs and flaws...
We want things to take long. We want gold to be worth something. If you made too much gold it would be D2 all over again. It's gonna be more like WoW where gold is a very valuble currency.
