Actualy the problem is not only the fact that is beind delayed but as we approach the release they are cutting things shown before that are taking some of the glorie of the game.As a lot of people already said, diablo 3 is being aproached to a diablo 2 with better grafics and a Rmah.I hope at least in future patches they implement some of the features they cut out/never depelop because they want to rush release.
considering they have almost NONE of the core (fail) features from D2 i cant possibly see how anyone can compare them like that.
things D3 doesnt have from D2:
pot spamming, gambler, skill trees, attribute distribution, runestones, tp scrolls, identify scrolls, limited number of bolts/arrows, fail mercenaries, trade games, boss runs, hostiling (lawl)
things added to D3 that arent in D2:
rune skill system, changing skills on the fly, blacksmith, jeweler, game-wide farming, GAH, RMAH, achievements, better stat effects, health globes, far better graphics (obv) , every class has its own resource system w/ individual attributes to them, 100x more viable builds, all skills wpn dmg based, mercenary skill choices, inferno mode, individual loot, pvp arena's
There are some games that I used to play, that I no longer will due to the graphics. AoE, SC, Redneck Rampage, etc... I used to enjoy those games a lot, but after reloading them I quickly discovered they are simply not worth playing anymore. D2 is on the border atm....probably about to cross the line to unplayable when D3 comes out.
A more practical conern is how much the delays will hurt the games life expectancy.
delays will only hurt beginning sales because people will get sick of it and boycott it for a bit just to QQ more then give in a buy it eventually. the lifespan will be as long as how good the game is. like jay wilson said, people wont remember if the game is late, just if it was good. even if it got delayed another year if it comes out and its epic, who fukin cares
For hardcore Diablo fans this will be true, but a lot of gamers out there do consider graphics when playing games. The D3 graphics are already dated, and as the delays continue those graphics continue to age. I think this was what the OP meant to say.

Well to go back to the main idea : How long is too long?
It all depends how eager you are to play this game and how dedicated to the game you are.
If you planned playing D3 because you are bored with all mmo and rpg,fps which ever you usually play, you are probably going to wait an average of 2-3months until you find another game that comes out that you may or may not stick with it. If you used to play D2 for a good while you may wait until the release whenever it is with only one thing in mind: As long as the game comes out I'm fine with it.

again graphics dont mean shit, its 12 years later and playing D2 is still fun. even if D3 only has a 7-8 year lifespan thats still great, then release D4 and your good. also they update graphics with each expansion, they did in WoW. wow vanilla compared to cataclysm is WAY different.

Do you seriously ask whether the game is worth playing, only because of graphics?
In my opinion, Diablo 2 is still worth playing, and that game do not have the most awesome graphics.
Oh but it did 12 years ago, it did.
No when I bought D2 12 years ago I was disapointed by its graphics it was already outdated.
It doesn't matter if they released it next week or next year I would still be all over it. I've been waiting since wow came out for the next diablo so whats another year
