Build Guide
Hey boyz!
In my opinion/experience this build is currently one of the strongest possible monk setups for pushing solo GR leaderboards!
Please note: I always keep my diablo fans guides up to date and will be making adjustments to the guide whenever there is a shift in meta! so be sure to check back, and vote on the guide!
Basic game-play strategy:
- Use breath of heaven on cooldown (when in combat)
- Use inner sanctuary on cooldown (when in combat)
- Use epiphany on cooldown (when in combat)
- Use dashing strike at least every 4 seconds
- Cyclone to create density, and disrupt monsters with slow attackspeed
- Hold down Crippling Wave
Skill variations:
- Way of the hundred fists - Fists of Fury (swap out Crippling Wave, and change gear to holy - for a slightly different version of the build (this involves some pretty advanced snapshotting mechanics - not for beginners))
- Mystic ally - Any rune (swap out cyclone strike, for an extra health pot/spirit cap)
Legendary Gem variations:
- Pain Enhancer - Swap out Bane of the Stricken for a crazy dps Setup, with very mediocre single-target (only recommended for lulz)
Kanai's cube variations:
- N/A
Hellfire Passive/Alternative setups:
- Exalted soul (for an absolute max DPS setup, swap out Ytar)
- Near death experience (for HC players, swap out STI)
FAQ:
Q: Why don't we use Mystic ally on our bars?
A: When you activate MA, it causes downtime on the Inna's set DMG Multiplier.

Thanks mrsmart83!
1. I had a feeling that was the case with IAS but wasn't sure. I'll certainly look into re-rolling that.
2. My LpH is pretty good and I don't seem to have issue with staying alive as I can complete a 70 GR dying once to a stupid mistake, but my damage is just not there. So I'll try more damage and see how it goes
3. I'll need to see what my armor is but I think it's pretty high with my dex being over 11k but the 10:1 ratio is a great suggestion and point to shoot for. I read somewhere that you get severe diminishing returns after about 2k
4. Yes, PTR 2.4.1 shows Shelongs to be 150% so I'm looking forward to that and hope it sticks!
Additional questions:
5. I see you are using Way of 100 Fists. I use Crippling wave. Do you think I should consider switching if I can roll into the bonus damage with it? Or are they comparable?
6. What is your take on bonus damage on trinkets? Is it better than CHD or CHC?
7. Lastly I have a ancient RroG so I equip that and cube Unity as I've not found a good ancient roll on a Unity. But I am missing the bonus elite Damage. I assume I should consider taking the stat hit and go for the elite damage bonus? Do we just focus on elites most of the time anyhow?
8. What is your take on how Area damage works? I have it on my shoulders. Is it a bonus over all to all damage done and what's it's reach?
I tried a GR70 with the tweaks we talked about (still don't have the courage to change to WoHF) and it took me 3 tries. First try I saw a noticeable negative difference in my survivability but then again I got 3 champions in a row with Frozen, arcane, and/or shielding which is the worst for us. I tried again and did ok but pylons were non-existent, champions were hard to find. and mob density sucked so I was a hair too slow. Third time I got the dream shield pylon with a power pylon back to back and 4 champion groups with an elite all near by. I beat it at about 12:00 with 1 death. I didn't try a 71 after that. I think some of it has to do with my RNG and some with skill but I think I am probably where I need to be at 715 paragon points (11,000 DEX).
Anyone else willing to share their progression with this build so I can compare?
So I have unsuccessfully tried GR 71 seven times with the WoHF/FoF build and it seems to do better than CW/Mangle as I get more used to it. I'm still unclear if it's RNG or me that is making it better. Basically I'm not fully understanding the play style. I feel like I see better DPS when I target a different mob around me in 3 areas about once every second. Trying to keep my spirit at max with Breath of Heaven. Unfortunately it seems that when I use cyclone strike more than once to draw in more mobs or off curve I can't keep my spirit from draining even slightly and not staying at max which makes my damage go in the toilet. I find if I'm trying to watch my cooldowns I can miss a ground effect and then BOOM, I'm dead. It's challenging but I need some game play advice at this point.
Can you tell me how you rotate your skills and how you target and move and with what priority?
I feel I can do a 71 with good RNG as I was ahead of the timer with about 2-3 minuses left then got a new floor and couldn't find a dense pack or champion and hit the boss as time ran out.
My D3Planner build is here: My Sheet Comparing it yours I am not seeing what is causing me to not do the same as you. It must be my play style.
Well now, wasn't that a DERP move. I fixed the link and here it is: My Sheet
I'll try out your rotation. It's funny now how rank 70 seems fairly easy (done 3 in sub 12 mins the past couple days) but 71 is just a significant step in difficulty. And as we keep saying, I'm sure it has a lot to do with RNG. Thanks again for the help!
Congrats to you on completing 75! I have not had much chance to work on this in the past week or so. I was able to get to p745 and complete a GR71 at about 14:00 mins with some good pylon RNG. I can't really get augments above rank 60 gems with the little time I have so I have 5 at +300 Dex. I've been trying to get new a better Unity roll but can't seem to get a better one than I already have with an ok roll. I've been trying to get a better or ancient compass rose or traveler's pledge but still they elude me. I looked over your suggestions but I can't really change much you recommend due to what's already been re rolled. Here is a summary...
- reroll RCR on glove for AS (6% is enough) for extra dmg output and better breakpoints -- I can't
- reroll MA dmg on chest to elite dmg reduction (tihs 14% for MA is very few...) -- My Does damage reduction from elites really matter that much. wouldn't I want my MAs (all 10 of them) do more damage if that is what I need as my survivability is not too bad?
- reroll AD on amulet for 10% CHC, you can reroll AD later on weapon -- I can't
- reroll spirit generation on Fist Of Legend for AD -- I can't
- I would reroll LpH on Relentless Assault if possible (CDR, AD) - I need LpH
- completely reroll Compass Rose for better stats: DEX, CHR, CHD, avg. dmg. If you have a good one with AS, reroll AS from the glove for LpH. -- Trying to get a new one that I can do this with
Basically I'm happy with where I am with sub 800 paragon levels so I'm focusing more on just farming paragons. I've been reading the proposed 2.4.1 patch notes and with gem and shelong's buffs coming I think we are going to get much stronger so I'm happy to wait for that.
should i change Botrap with Eso for higher survivalbility and MAllies with serenity ascended?
FYI, I took a break for a few weeks and then came back to it. Got an anch Unity and and anch Compas Rose, slapping a +325 dex augment on the Unity. Had a fair run in a 73 GR with decent RNG. I beat it at 14:32 to land on the leader board for the first time. Well, that was my goal. Pretty proud that I was able to do that sub 800 paragons. Will see how it goes when the new patch comes out. But I'd still say this build is viable.
*Sigh*
I dunno. I can't exceed GR65 with this build. I'm paragon 700+. I've tried the build as-is as well as attempted a number of variations but I've just hit a solid wall at GR65. My gems are rank 55+ and most of my gear is ancient. Just can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong...
PS: Quin, I still appreciate the time you put into all of these builds/guides/videos. I've subscribed to you recently on YT and always look forward to your next upload.
Have you augmented any of your gear? The loads of extra Dex that your get makes a huge difference in your damage delt. If you have your gems at about 55 you need to focus on running public greater rifts to help get them into the 60s as well as bang out a bunch of 60 rank gems to augment with. 300 Dex per item is a massive boost to DPS!
Problem is, the only gems I have leveled above 50 are those I really want to keep. Guess I just have to put in the foot work to level up more gems just for augmenting.
I appreciate the feedback.
you need a minimum of 2 set pieces to get a bonus, 1 piece doesn't work.
I hit the leaderboard for season 5 with this build. A lot of other monks did, too (Though the EP build seemed more popular). The simple truth is, and please don't take offense - if you don't want to put in a lot of work, you're just not going to get above GR65.
It's a lot of work. It really is. I pushed real hard this season. I played every single day. I leveled an insane amount of legendary gems - first six of them were leveled to 50, used to augment my gear, and then the rest were leveled to 60 and then used to augment my gear, at which point I releveled the first six to 60 and REAUGMENTED my gear. I also got to paragon 860 this season.
Other monks have done even better than me, but I do not group, for any reason. I never play public games and I'm not in a clan. Yet still, my name has been immortalized in the top 800 monks for this season despite that - which a huge achievement that I WORKED MY ASS OFF for. If you want to push rifts, if you really want it - you have to work. If you don't really want it, then there's honestly no reason for you to go past GRIFT 65 or so. It's not necessary, and putting in the work is really an effort, especially if you don't play with others.
I'll be running this build next season as well, especially since the Inna's set will be the 'gifted' set for the season. I really want to thank Quin for his hard work and dedication to the D3 community - it's thanks to him that this exclusively solo, clanless player hit the leaderboard in Season 5, fighting like a bitch against those who botted their way to paragon level 2200. I worked like hell and earned what I got, but Quin helped me.
Thanks Quin
Hey, ty for the guide.
What kind of Toughness do you need to do grift 60++ I just die very quickly?
thanks
Hi Quin. I see that the 6 piece bonus of Raiment is getting a huge buff in 2.4.2. Are you going to recommend dropping Inna's in favor of 6 pieces of Raiment for the generator build?
Achieved a lvl 73 grift with this build, thanks. only thing i had to change for more toughness was swapping bane of trapped for Esoterik Alteration.
