Diablo 3 Boss Damage States

Bashiok revealed interesting details about boss fights and lesser mob fights that weren't shown in the gameplay video. These events will have gradual signs to let players know each phase of the fight until a boss dies. Players will be drenched in blood if their character is too close to a dying monster.

Whipper: I think it would be cool if we could see marks on boss when a mellee character slice him with a sword or an axe etc....

We can see that the boss have sword marks and axe marks or that he look tired and he walk slower etc. till he die... I think it could add some realistic aspect to the game and more fun killing bosses

Bashiok: For boss fights we don't really want to just start throwing "damage decals" on them. It can very easily be too subtle if you're fighting a smaller boss or one that has odd geometry to it, and it can also end up that no matter the flavor, style, and cool look to a boss you just end up fighting a big gory mess.

Also we think that we can go a lot further than just simple decals and get something much cooler out of a boss fight. So what we hope to do for at least the bosses where it makes sense is to show more apparent and visually noticeable damage states. Instead of a blood splatter they may actually lose a limb, or a piece or armor, or - like the Thousand Pounder - may transform in some dramatic way changing how the fight progresses. We want to go a lot further than just showing sword slashes and instead use dramatic and noticeable (which can be difficult in a game like this) ways to indicate a boss' current state.

Speaking of battle damage though, and I don't think this came across in the gameplay video or any of the screenshots as of yet, but when an enemy dies a critical death it actually drenches your hero in blood if you're within proximity of the spray. It's awesome.

Thanks, Lagovardos

It's an interesting addition to the 'style' debate, but I agree with Bashiok that eventually one would only be fighting a "gory mess."

I like it. its better than you and the boss beating the piss out of each other until one just collapses

The lose of limbs sounds like a great indicator of damage dealt. especially on something like a zombie.

It would be great to have to hack apart a large boss from the legs up in order to get to the head.

this is gonna be interesting. body parts flying around and guts splattering everywhere is just....beautiful

what did he mean by that? what dramatic way so that the way the fight progresses? does he think of the change of color and a little more speed?
probably not the way he comes to the world since there is no fight at that point at all....

Sounds very good, and a proising way to put variation into the otherwise very monotone boss-fights we see in D2.

Sounds cool, body parts and armor falling off that is pretty sweet lol. :D.

Wonder if any of the stuff that falls off the boss is collectible or not. That be tight lol.

Hell yeah...I'm all for some more blood. It will be so sweet if we can smash heads and tear off limbs. Awesome!

Awesome ideas, I'm glad to hear they're pursuing such avenues to make the game play more interesting on boss fights. I think it'd be pretty sweet if at some point the boss in the game play video lost an arm or a leg or a jaw, how cool would that be for a surprise during the fight?

@ Souther: very funny signature! :D
@ Kaotic: would you mind using punctuation?
@ Blizzard :P: awesome, sounds amazing!

Let's see.... Drenched in blood if staying in a certain proximity while some bosses die? Awesome in my book. But for how long will the blood stay on you?

Let me guess - it's because you don't use the punctuation when you talk with your friends in real life either, right? :D

It all sounds so awesome to me! Graphical indications of health, or the lack thereof, will make the fight much more fun to experience.

LoL, well no i do not do that either. So why should i take the time and do what I'm doing now when people already know what I'm saying jeeze. People want to be so anal about it I'll keep doing this but its gay in my opinion LoL...... Oh well But, what the topic is about since i posted it on the other thread i agree with everyone it's going to be awesome....

i tihnk it would get kinda boring becuase im sure that what Blizzard will do is just set a hp trigger and when it gets below that trigger then it will just fall off and it will get old very soon, but none the less it is alot more interesting than just one of u dieing.

Yea, I think he does mean the fact that the Thousand Pounder lit up and moved/attacked faster. As you said, nothing else happened in the fight and the creation of the monster doesn't affect the fight in any way. Hopefully, there will be actual "dramatic" changes in boss fights. Granted, it was cool how he lit up and swung his axes around, but I wouldn't describe it as dramatic.

Also, because it wasn't in the OP and some people seem to be getting really excited about a loss of limbs.

    Quote from "Bashoik" »
It was just an example I made up, I don't know if the loss of a limb would actually happen or make sense for a fight. :)

So ya. It might not actually happen at this point. It was just the opinion/idea of a CM.
