I find the atmosphere in Act to be spot-on beautiful and very much within the boundaries of the "diablo universe'. The rolling fog, dead animals, corpses strewn about, wide open fields that show evidence of a once functioning society now overrun by evil. Act 1 was well beyond my expectations, in terms of atmosphere. Act 2 follows suite well but the cheesy story-line involving Mahgda really seemed to take a shit on the ebb-n-flow of the Act.
Frankly, the only act that betrays the atmosphere of the Diablo universe is Act 4. It seemed rushed (developmentally), ugly and I feel like defending heaven isn't what Diablo players want. We want hell, knee deep in fire and brimstone, we wanted hell and we got heaven.
Please, tell me you're joking when you say there is Diablo-like atmosphere in ANY of the acts.
It lacks the gothic, eerie feel completely. PoE though captured it nicely, especially in solaris and lunaris temples + the music score, It's just perfect.
Go on youtube, watch the video and compare them to Diablo 3's atmosphere and then come back here and say that again.
I distinctly remember people on these forums longing for a final heaven vs hell battle scenario, which would see the heroes defend heaven at some point in the game. That was like years before announcement and after it. Everyone wanted that shit. It was a good idea, but poorly executed. It would be way better to defend heaven and then chase Diablo back to hell for a final battle, or something idk.
Also, it's not just itemization for me. It's almost everything from the ground up, including the battle.net. It's just fucked up in so many ways, it's really hard to see it regain any life. For that they'll need to completely eradicate the idiotic concept of linear areas and objectives, redesign battle.net, or at least bring back the useful features, add skill trees, stat points as well. The fucking health globes they can keep for all I care. But, that will never happen. They can only tune up some imbalances, and add new content in the expansion. But the core will remain the same.
Although, they got the gameplay and combat SPOT on, perfect. But that's it.
