Hey guys, I did love using Archon in Normal and Nightmare as it did amazing damage and had decent survivability for the duration.
But then as I got to act 3 hell, it basically dropped out and was quickly replaced with MI.
Now I'm in inferno and starting to learn act 1 and the expectations of inferno difficulties.
Basically, melee doesn't exist and as much as I want to play my Archon spec, I cant.
Now I built my Archon with Energy Armor Runed for Force and still got 1 shot by Act 3's bosses giant fire ball as I just got out of melee and it landed on me, so yeah Force armor wont save you or that was a bug.
Needless to say, Force Armor + Improved Archon is what got me thinking of using the Archon but I don't see it happening.
I did some calculations, if I had 40k health and got 1 shot, the creature hit me for 400k.
If this is the case, then how could blizzard ever justify melee classes or builds?
This is where I think Inferno has really screwed up the game big time.
It is all about hit run, hit run.
Every tried to out run fast movement elites with vortex that have either jailer or walls on? Answer, you cant and you will die in 3 seconds.
I think blizzard needs to fix their game if Archon will ever be viable as a build or any melee type builds in general.
What do you all think?
(Note I do know people can melee stuff, but melee need to be carried through act 2; at lease that is what I'm seeing people complain about act 2 being a tough act with all the range units in it 3 shooting people)
Im currently in Act 2 and used Archon whole of act 1 inferno.
Using that together with the 15% cooldown passive and I love it. Whenever I see an elite/champion pack I start with putting up poison hydra then archon and just started nuking from range. By the time most packs are at melee range they have lost quite a bit of health. It goes without saying that you have to be able to take 2-3 hits.
When archon ends I usually have little life left so I pop diamond skin and start kiting, works like a charm
So either I start off with archon, or I end the fight with archon, either way, it has done a HUGE difference for me!
Your post was a little scattered, but I'll respond to a few points.
Well, remember that Force Armor was changed a few weeks ago to only absorb an amount equal to 100% of your health. So if you have 40k health, an 80k hit will one-shot you. I still use Force Armor in Inferno, but you still have to be careful about taking huge hits to the face.
Archon is amazing if you want to put out huge amounts of damage as fast as possible. The problem is that you can't kill Inferno mobs fast enough before they kill you. This leaves you with using abilities like Mirror Image or Teleport (especially Fracture) and most wizards also use a slowing spell like Blizzard or arcane with Temporal Flux. Fun? Maybe. Personally I loved Archon in nightmare and hell, but it just isn't viable solo.
Inferno is extremely hard right now. That was intended. Most people aren't going to have a lot of fun in it. I'm almost done with Act 2 but I unlocked Inferno two weeks ago. My alt is already past nightmare just because I got frustrated with Inferno. There is no point complaining right now, Inferno will get tweaked in the next patch or two.
I love Archon. I wish I could fit it into more Inferno builds. Unless you're in a group of 3-4 people, you'll likely have to do a lot more kiting which means there isn't a lot of time to channel spells.
You're a bit harsh on Blizzard I think. Archon is a great spell, but you have the fit it into a build / situation that's appropriate. If you're looking to solo, Archon doesn't really suit your needs as you'll be kiting much more often. If you're in a group setting where you're not running around kiting as often and can find 15-20s to stand still and pewpew even couple of minutes, THAT is where the ability will shine.
Archon has it's time and place.

But LOTS of abilities aren't really "viable" in inferno.
Don't you know that?
Not being mean, just blunt...
