The reason why a dps meter wont work well with Diablo games is simply because its about survival, if a dps meter would be added into the game then everyone would just compete about who is doing the best dps and be making stupid misstakes or die because your constantly in the heat of battle because you wanna be in the top of the dps.
Diablo is about teamwork and survival, not about dps. It works in WoW because you have one tank taking all the damage and mostly your just standing still doing damage, Diablo doesnt play like that,
Exactly this.
I'm all for damage meters in WoW, between it and WoL I can effectively make decisions on exactly how well someone preforms in a fights even if they don't die to standing in crap. Decisions can then be made to try and fix them or dump them from the raid.
Diablo 3, action/ hack n slash rpgs aren't only about the amount of damage one puts out. In fact REAL rpgs aren't even about those. Some players are pivotal to a group and do absolutely no damage or healing, they simply control when monsters enter and exit fights. They control the flow of the fight. How exactly do you measure that? No charts or pie graphs can really be created to display how effective someone is at that role.
Now for the real reason a dps meter is wanted, to identify leechers with greater ease. There is never going to be a good way to identify a good leecher. The bad ones are easy, the good ones are hard to identify, and being able to judge that effectively just comes with time, or you can avoid it all together by playing with friends or just solo. You don't have to play the game with other people, it's just potentially easier to gear up if you do.
