Hmm yeah, after looking up the stranger, seems more likely to be him.
As we have at least two portraits of him, seems we will encounter him several times. So freeing him later on doesn't need to conflict with meeting him earlier.
The point I think is that Leah isn't under Diablo's influence the same way anyone else has been in the series.
I don't think Diablo has "possessed" Leah at this point per normal. He's somehow dormant, and this is beyond his direct control. I am betting the "Adria Betrayl" event is the catalyst that brings him out.
Another fishy thing - In the end Diablo is assaulting Heaven. Yet the entire Diablo series has been about how angels and demons could get an edge in their conflict from humans. All of Diablo's scheming must somehow rely on getting something from humanity/sanctuary - if that isn't Leah's body, it still has to be something human that he is using for power.
Whether or not Hakkan = Belial, they are VERY closely related. We run to "inform" Hakan in a place named saddle_audience, i.e. Belial's audience, which is also called the Throne Room. And being Diablo, we aren't likely to have events for fedex/curior quests, so this event is likely to lead directly to conflict. If it's not Belial = Hakkan, then it's something like a demon already got Hakkan, or we spend the event defending Hakkan from said demon.
Now Caldeum's been going to hell ever since he took power, so if Hakkan were to survive, that would probably mean we banished the dark influence (Belial) and things can go back to goody goody. Just seems far too optimistic for the middle of a Diablo plot. Whether killed by a demon or used by Belial as a host (or even a shapeshifted ruse), I doubt Hakkan is going to survive this in the end.
Also I think we can rule out Leah dying in Act 1. We battle for the soulstone in Act 2, meaning it's not in Leah's possession until during or after Act 2. The adria betrayal event suggests that Azmodean is faced in act 3, and the "black soulstone" cinematic is the perfect setup for this, with part of act 3 taking place around Mt. Arreat at well. Of course, Adria being threatened and even possessed in Act 1 is very possible.
My guess is that "Adria's Betrayal" is something to do with the plot setup for act 4. More like an in-game "cinematic" than a boss fight. After Belial is dead, she is somehow involved in giving Diablo what he needs (black soulstone? Leah's body?) to go smashing through the heavens. And I can more easily imagine her character to have some kind of vendetta or wish to bring the Heavens down, moreso than bringing hell to earth. It may be her intention that the net result (Diablo trashing the heavens, humans trashing Diablo) finally weakens both heaven and hell to the point that Humans can being to stand on their own feet.
