I didn't "ignite a flame war". I simply warned her that Americans, on average, do not like the French. Otc attacked me for pointing that out. I asked him to prove me wrong and he refused.
I don't think it's wrong to warn someone about something that is relatively common on average.
Also, its singling me out if you say LINKX DID THIS in a thread, not in a PM.
I was referring to the argument as a whole. Again, not singling you out. It takes more than one person to engage in a flame-fest.
I highly doubt Vinyamar really and truly needed someone to point out that some Americans have a less-than-complimentary opinion about the French.
I'm sure she's an intelligent girl, and is well aware of that.
And you're intelligent enough to know that making such a statement was bound to raise someone's hackles, so why even go there?
When OTC responded to your warning, shouldn't you have done the exact same thing you're telling me to do, and respond to him via PM, instead of dragging it out in front of a new member, in her own thread?
It's off-putting to new members, and sets a bad example, which, as I said, defeats your purpose of trying to hold on to those new people.
And I'm not even singling this one instance out; another reason for starting this thread -- it's more wide-spread than in Vinyamar's thread. A few people jumped on someone in my introductory thread, and I'm sure it's happened plenty of other times in other threads in this forum.
By the way, if you have a problem with me, PM me, don't make a thread about it.
I wasn't trying to single-out one person, hence the thread.
I agree with you -- quality over quantity, but that wasn't my point.
My sole point was, if you want quality people to stick around, don't ignite flame wars in their introductory thread. That shows bad quality on the part of those who do so; you defeat your purpose by showing your ass in the same thread in which someone introduces themselves.
It shows disrespect to the new person, and reflects poorly on the community.
It doesn't really reflect very well on your maturity to say things to new members like, "I hope you're intelligent...", and then proceed to engage in a flame war with someone else on that new person's introductory thread.
If you folks are so gung-ho on keeping new people around, how about show some modicum of respect?
Just a suggestion.

That's all I'm saying.
