I should start with the fact that I am not a fan of World of Warcraft. I'm not a fan of MMORPGs in general but the story of WOW doesn't do it for me and more importantly I dislike the aesthetics of the game. Not in a malicious way or anything, but I just don't care, nor do I look down on those who spend their time immersed in that world.
I'm the same way. I've nothing personal against WoW, but its aesthetic is far from my tastes as well. And most things prior to D3 in Diablo really held their own aesthetic and feel.
What I loved about the game is how it wasn't over stylized. It was gritty, it was creepy, it was epic.
Did you not also get the feeling that while there was magic in the Diablo world, it wasn't necessarily polluted with magic. Magic seemed like it was still hard to come by and only few experts possessed it in large amounts. Whereas in Warcraft, your very cup of coffee was swirling with magical goodness and everything sparkled and it all just kind of blurred the senses after awhile.
Another important part of the game to me was how, when playing, you didn't feel as is you were invincible. You feared the enemies you faced and you knew your weaknesses.
I think I know what you mean. Previous Diablo games we still knew we'd have what it would take to ultimately take down evil, but these trailers do give the impression of invulnerability and overconfidence. I realize in character trailers they're just trying to showcase the style and abilities of the classes, but we want to still fear the enemy as well. We want to really believe we are in danger in this supposedly dangerous world. Show the classes killing off enemies, sure. But don't have them do it all so flawlessly and effortlessly that it takes away the mystique and dangerous feelings we're supposed to be getting from the monsters.
Not to mention, when you actually kill Andarial for the first time, you feel like you've actually accomplished something. With this in mind, it's clear that Blizzard is moving in a somewhat different direction than I hoped.
I think this really remains to be seen. I think we may find in actual gameplay that it really is difficult and you can't just savant your way through everything. And that bosses won't be a dime a dozen which would normally make us take them for granted. Yes, the first time you see Andariel you're like, "Oh, well fuck me then..." And I think we may yet have plenty of moments like that in D3. Sometimes I think we put ourselves at a disadvantage this way following every step of development along the way. There was obviously not this much exposure to D2 before it was released. We're all kind of filling ourselves to the brim on D3 development news.
You shouldn't have to be a purist just to have complaints. I was mad when the game first came out that some people had legitimate complaints, not just about the art direction, but people were shooting these complaints down because they thought we were all just a bunch of D1 purists who hated change.
When the trailer first starts you see the boots of the new hero...high-heeled?
Ugh, don't remind me. I'm so sick of high heels on costumed heroes. I can masturbate just fine to the Demon Hunter without her looking like a dominatrix.
Another over stylized character who wears WOW style armor what makes no sense.
The pauldron is a bit silly looking, but I like the rest of the armor. It just looks like rugged ranger type gear to me. But yeah, it seems like they have to add just that one embellished element to her costume just cause they can. Bigger and more is not always better.
As the trailer progressed my sense of excitement dissolved into the bitterness which has forced me to write this to you now. BUT, what really made me laugh was that in the trailer the demon hunter says "I stand alone". So badass right? Not exactly. Am I not right to think that this statement goes against the entire promotion of group play?
That and she is supposed to be a part of a larger group of Demon Hunters. So yeah it doesn't seem she stands alone at all. Dialogue like that always risks making characters more one dimensional and less interesting to me. But the point of the trailer is the opposite of all that anyway. It's just to get everyone excited. Nothing more.
The one thing that has had me worried throughout the news releases over the years has been this idea that characters are SOOO badass that it ruins that fear you experience during the game. Your character is so badass, you can take on all of sanctuary. This is a failure to me.
To be fair though, once you start playing D2 into Hell difficulty and all the Baal runs and all that shit, the game soon got that kind of feel to it anyway. It's only most intense when you're playing single player the first time through.
The nature of this character frustrates me, and the aesthetics of this character are laughable to me. Is there no allure in subtleness anymore?
Preachin' to the choir, brother. I've always loved that Diablo's universe had more of minimalist feel to it. But most consumers' memories are too short to remember and appreciate all that. People just seem to want light tracers on everything, flamboyant aesthetics, and whatever else makes them feel like their characters are powerful and cool. Because the player is powerful and cool! Yeah! Right...
I'm a fan of the underdog and that's exactly the appeal of Diablo and Diablo 2. Heros that are badass in their own smaller ways, not over the top, who go out and try to save the world. But don't worry Diablo 3 fans...the demon hunter is here. Come to save the day with her highly practical pistol-like crossbows and super sexy high-heels. Sorry female barbarian, you'll have to sit this one out. Your sword just won't cut it and your feet are clearly too big.
LOL The female Barb definitely takes a backseat to all this, doesn't she? She just has to mope back there while everything else rakes in all the coolness.
The worst thing about this character design though is that she wears fucking high heels. Forget all the shit about reloading crossbows in each hand. Should I just tell myself she also does all that tumbling acrobatic shit in high heels with the help of magic as well? I'm just saying it's old, man. There are tons of ways they can still make this chick look all sexy without putting her in high heels.
I often wonder when they make characters in video games all sexy, just who are they trying to seduce? Is the Demon Hunter gonna use her feminine wiles on a demon to distract it long enough to kill it? No. She's just gonna shoot bolts at it and hurl bombs and shit. I don't know.
Well it said that every demon hunter had a story similar to the one that Abd al-Hazir met. Meaning that they all had their entire town destroyed by demons with everybody they knew killed. If that doesn't give somebody motivation to kill demons I don't know what will.
I'm not saying they don't have good enough motivation to wanna kill demons. Doesn't seem like you need much motivation. I just like really knowing more about what kinds of magics and devices they use, how they developed their fighting styles and tactics. I don't know. I guess the D3 manual will have even more about it.
While I agree that it is kind of silly, I realized that I cared more about the fact that she cant reload than the fact that 1 arrow can split into several magically.
Then I came to the conclusion if magic can make it okay for an arrow(I guess bolt actually)to split up, then magic is an okay excuse for automatic reloading.
Yeah I wasn't honestly trying to doubt the ability to load crossbows in each hand. I was only saying there's too much dual wielding going on in this game to the point of it not being so cool anymore.
I think dual wielding should be an advantage of fewest classes as possible. We know the Barb will have it, as well as the Monk with his claws, but I really don't like the notion of dual crossbows. Like too much dual wielding just makes dual wielding itself less special.
And her background story actually didn't say much other than that the Demon Hunters are a group created for hunting down all the demons of the Burning Hells. Quite a lofty goal it would seem. Like swearing to hunt down all pollution on planet earth. Demons just seem like a fact of life the way the undead are. At least in a magical world like this.
I thought the symbol on her chest was something of a cross. Made me wonder if they were a possible offshoot of like Paladins or something like that. A good origin story should talk more about their beliefs and motivations. Can their motivation really be just to slay demons? Surely another external force unites them, right? The story should talk about that as well.
Some of her spells looked awfully hellfire, to me it's just the voice and the actual aesthetics of the class that reminded me of the Assassin. Not to mention the actual role, the assassin rooted out demonic corruption, and I'm pretty sure the demon hunter will be doing the same thing. Skill wise, the monk way much more of course.
I understand. Though the Assassin went more after mages who dabbled in demonic magics while the DH apparently goes after demons mainly. I guess anyway. Heck, that just makes every class a demon hunter. Which class hasn't killed shitloads of demons?
Mm, I think the Monk has more of an assassin feel compared to the Demon Hunter. Or least, reminds me more of the Assassin in D2. But yes I can see what you're saying. I keep checking the D3 official website hoping to find the lore behind this class. I'm interested in maybe some use of demonic magic as part of her background story. You know, using demonic magics against demons themselves sort of thing.
