No, it's the only reason to play. There are two other possible reasons which have no merit:
1. To PvM, which is utterly boring and repetitive as anyone who's played can tell you.
2. To collect items and build characters. I fail to see what benefit these people get out of bothering to play bnet at all; if they're satisfied simply by improving their virtual selves and don't care about others then why don't they play single player?
In real life, self improvement is fulfilling and fantastic. After learning difficult concepts or finishing a tough workout, everyone feels good about themselves. But getting pleasure purely from improvement in a video game? Come--the fuck--on. There's absolutely no point in improving and reaching the pinnacle of power if you can't compare yourself to others (favorably, I might add) in PvP.
Really, if anyone here thinks there was any reason to play Diablo 2 besides PvP they're an utter fool, and I don't have anything more to say to them. Thus deriding D2 pvp is deriding the only purpose of D2 in the first place, and if you hate D2 then gtfo.

Back on topic. I think it's a little early to be worried about casualizing the game since they have already talked about keeping the difficulty levels in which is what prevented this in the first place. Normal difficulty SHOULD be casual, that's what it's for. Nightmare gets a little harder, and Hell harder then that. That's the point. As a little know saying goes: The higher the fewer. (bonus points if anybody identifies it origin)

I think a 12 or maybe 6 hour day would be good. The changes in D2 were just not distinct enough. Was there even ANY change after act 1. I don't remember anything later.

I like the peddler character idea too. I think it could be a more advanced idea from the stasht. Instead of just your stash he would be access to items from all of your characters. One huge stash for all characters on each account no more mules necessary.

I've been thinking about the progression from D1 to D2. In D1 it was free for all no warning. With D2 you at least got a warning and some info. It seems like for 3 they already are talking about limiting it more. I think mutual sounds as good a step as any.

Why should Blizzard encourage this type of behavior? Give me a few good reasons why ANY character should be able to attack someone HALF there level.
Here's my original question again. I'll try and derail the flame fest with the few pot shots thus far. How bout an answer? Does anyone have one that doesn't involve insults? Here I am waiting to be convinced that you are right. Inform me of how being attacked by somebody twice your level improves the quality of play.

pvp in some kind of way needs to be able keep a lvl 99 able to fight a lvl 45.

Soundslike a really neat idea. I definately want the AI to be improved. It didn't seem to change much from 1 to 2 so I think it'd be great to see some bad guys actually seem to have tactics.

My statements were in response to intrinsik4's post about the differences in appearence between the males and females I see nothing wrong with the appearences from D2 or D3. I was just pointing them out to illustrate that fact.

If I remember correctly the big problem was that while the male barbarian was old and weathered, the female looked young - and despite being a melee/str character, has a very girlish figure.
That's because the male is older. He's the same guy that was running around twenty years ago. Whereas the female is a new person. Of course she's younger.

The druid is supposedly out in nature surviving for himself yet he's skinny as hell and looks like he wouldn't last a week. He should be lot more muscular. The Assasin is a killing machine yet she looks like nothing but T&A.
