The problem with mods is the unbalance. It's rather hard to make a balanced game...
Monsters with infinite Hit Points and players that need to drink a pool of potions to defeat them is not fun.

"Obtuse enough to be a menace, and not stupid enough to be innocuous".
Middle-earth is, as the name suggests, very Tolkien-oriented, but besides that offers many upgrades in the game. Varaya & Khan were (are?) great modders who came up with lots of improvements. Recommended to all hobbit-hype fans, but not only.

Hi Gwalch,
Thanks for the info, I downloaded the Middle Earth mod!
Do I have to install it over Diablo or over Hellfire?

I know what I'm gonna say is goin' to be heresy...
but I forgot the butcher's weapon name, long time, it's the cleaver??
anyway it was so good for starter warriors, you could clear all the catacombs with it, hehehe
Yep, the CLEAVER it was!
Sweet for a couple of levels but then we all had to change it for something with more power.

By the Way, is Hellfire worth it, or is it as bad as I've heard?
A biased opinion here (I love Hellfire): TRY IT!
It adds a new section (4 floors with new enemies) and you can play the Monk!

I played this game through once but a question. Wasn't there nightmare and hell levels? I didn't find out how to get there or are those only in multiplayer?
I also think there are Normal, Nightmare and Hell levels?

lvl 16 rogue on my first 6 hour binge, spent alot of time trying to get the butcher down legitly. Ended up having to use a bow with knockback and half an invintory of pots. Every thing is so final in D1. its almost like HC mode in D2. no autosave, if you die you have to fight for your corpse, you cant just quit and start a new game, becasue most of your gear is lying on the floor where you managed to die.

Fully agree!
I remember having a bad mood and pain in the chest when my character died in some catacombs where bats attacked me, and I spent almost an hour trying to get my gear back!
First I used whatever I had in my inventory, then I had to buy loads from Griswold until I barely managed to get the elite items from my corpse...
Probably one of the worst sensations I had in all my gaming life, I wouldn' want to feel like that again! EVER!

Yeah, my older brother had a Rogue and he was just like you, so he never pushed the switch for Diablo
it was up to me with my Warrior - if I recall his name was Danath named after Warcraft II (great game) - to kill the demon before him, and my brother had lot more levels than me, hehehehhe, big time...
What a wuss, hahaha!
I remember going around the "maze" filled with those tall Knights in order to get to the area where the switch was!

When I saw the Butcher chasing me I almost fainted! At first he was so damned hard to kill!
So my favourite moments were when I killed the Butcher and also killing Diablo and the cinematic that follows, which is tremendous!
My *least* favourite moments: fighting those sexy girls with red and blue leggings and vampire wings which shoot stars at you, I got tired of walking after them to kill the last one standing!

For the archers, you should be blocking better with your shield, perhaps you DEX is not high enough or you need a better shield.
