BF3 is a whole different beast. How many online RPG's, ARPG's, MMO's etc have done an open beta? Not a whole lot, and for good reason. They're not FPS games that are largely client based.
If they did an open beta, they would have no control over the system specifications they want to focus test on. Gradually increasing the load and focusing on specific parameters puts less pressure on the servers all at once (remember, this is a new game and system for Blizzard), and if they notice an anomaly, it's (generally) easier to troubleshoot.
People need to stop treating a Beta test as a free preview. I know that's why 95% of us want in the Beta, but they aren't obligated to even provide us with one. Pretty sure Blizzard has weighed the marketing strength of a limited beta vs a public beta. As someone that's worked in marketing and promotions for 7 years, I'd go with limited as well especially if I was behind something so anticipated (very little risk in loss of confidence). The carrot on a stick is one of the oldest marketing tools we know of
I'm also sorry to say, business isn't quite that simple. As a "business manager", you absolutely can't be that naive to think they take pure profit like that from box sales, or even digital sales.
Well, as I said, its not a free preview, they are actually already paying for the whole game just to play 1/3 of an act.
We all know that not 100% of the box sales goes to them... I wouldn't go in costs+other stuff on the post... As you agree with me that 1mil pre-orders is not a precise number...
I agree with you about the server issues and the lack of control with a giant beta... but nothing stops them from using 2 beta servers: one server just for fun and massive players test with no garantees of stability and another one as a closed beta just for pure testing of whatever they want.
Now, expressing my thoughts with no knowledge behind it, as an NDA beta already released what else to hide from the beta?
(I am just a financial consultor, please explain me if I am wrong... Marketing and promotions is not my best area lol)
Thanks for posting ur thoughts...
It's not that they don't want to, it's that their servers obviously can't handle the stress of that many people yet.
I understand, I just think for 250.000,00 U$ a month they should give it a try. They can pay a lot of their employees with that amount... (Sorry for always talking about $$, as a Business manager those questions just increases my curiosity lol)
I just pre-ordered BF3 to be able to play the beta.
That made me wonder... Why wouldn't Blizzard give open beta keys to people who pre-order Diablo III?
Would that be so BAD?
I mean, they have Millions of FANS all over the world and they could use their money without even releasing the GAME!
That is just GENIAL!
Imagine with me, a MILLION pre-buyers(Low prevision).
The game will cost 49.99 U$ * 1.000.000 buyers.(Not getting in details about costs and all...) Just a simple thought..
That gives them U$ 49.990.000,00 which they can use for whatever they want! I mean, on the lowest expectation put it on a bank and get some interest! They would get 245.000,00 U$ a month for doing nothing!(There are MUCH better investments of course!) And there still more 4 months for the game's release.(My prevision)
Just my simple thoughts, wake up Blizzard this strategy is already being used by other companies!
I just hope IF there is a PC and a CONSOLE version they play different servers. PC version have advantages, CONSOLE version also got some advantages. Lets hope it's not...
Just wondering...How will the AH work for console versions?

Why Blizz would use FB if there are so many problems related to it?
Just invite random people where they MUST be signed... like Blizzard site?
I dont know why I registered on that stupid website beta... They are picking FB random players anyways...
Go Mooege!

I am sure Blizzard will lose some sales due to that...
Of course Diablo 3 OWNs TL ... BUT... that is my opinion only...
