Ok, good. That means I'm not off my rocker and followed this thread correctly, haha. I'm sure some ridiculous dolls will be available in the full game. I'm somewhat curious about legendary items and how they did the item system in this game. Hopefully all of the legendaries are useful because there were some lackluster or worse legendaries in d2... I'm going to be wielding a boulder when I start playing. It's bound to have the slowest attack speed of any weapon in the game and will make my WD stronger... then I'll have to find a bigger boulder...
@sacridoc - I agree with what you're saying. Neither of the builds I posted are meant to tank because a WD simply cannot get in the fray and take a lot of damage while dealing a lot of damage. They are intended to hit hard while staying on the periphery of enemy reach to minimize damage taken. The reason I used the term tank is because I want these builds to be able to do a lot of damage consistently without mana problems or sacrificing survivability (for the most part...).
After reading through this, I want to affirm that my thoughts on this are correct, so @sacridoc or @Ruppgu, if you could chime in on my comment, I'd appreciate it. So, for channeling spells only, a 2H weapon is almost always better (unless you have a very good OH with +dmg) because channeling spells incur mana costs which is dependent on attack speed but attack speed doesn't actually effect how often they tick right? If, in theory, you had a 1H/OH and a 2H where the former combination has the same damage to the 2H weapon, but the 2H has a slower attack speed, a channeling spell like firebats (unruned) would cost less mana for the 2H but do the same amount of damage as the 1H/OH combo, right? Sorry for the long sentences, but this is why I asked these questions, haha.
The changes you made are interesting and I definitely see where you're coming from. Do you think replacing pestilence on locusts with cloud of insects would be more effective overall? That's something I think could go either way until I actually test the differences between them. I'm not sure if the dog build would be better or not. It'd definitely ensure that I live longer, but mana might be an issue. Again, that's something that's up in the air depending on what kind of gear I have equipped and how efficient the non-pet build is during testing. I guess I wasn't paying attention to corpse bomb when I chose that. I mistakenly thought it summoned the corpse bomb in addition to the acid cloud, which is incorrect. So, depending on the AOE radius for acid cloud, if I chose either slow burn or acid rain, cloud could be effective I think.
Also, I'm not sure if toads will be effective with the no mana cost rune or not. Assuming I have a fairly quick rate of attack, spamming legions of toads for free will surely hit a lot of enemies on the screen. If not (again, if the first build with bats is too costly...), I could switch to jumping spiders.
I see what you mean by pets being important as a distractor; however, neither of the builds you posted hit particularly hard which is what I want to do. Soul harvest with siphon should be a sufficient health regenerator if I get overwhelmed. Also, I could get equipment with health regen procs to compensate for damage taken. If I have the templar in my party, he, in conjunction with my snares (wall of zombies and grasp of the dead), should provide enough of a distraction/block to keep me out of the fray.
I've been toying with the idea of making a semi-tanking WD since I saw the skills he has. He reminds me a lot of the necro and I always preferred bone or poison necros. Anyway, this build is very mana intensive and I'm sure if it is even feasible, but that's why I thought I'd ask you folks. You probably know more than me about how the game will theoretically progress as far as mana costs and whatnot. So here it is:
The general idea behind it is to cast wall of zombies and grasping eels to pin enemies down so that I can cast locusts and acid cloud. If enemies get too close, I have fire bats and I can use soul harvest to recoup for damage taken. If this build is viable, then I could potentially change vision quest for blood ritual. I'm not sure which of those would be a better bet to rely on mana regeneration for.
If this build is not possible due it being overly mana intensive, here's the other build I could try:
The idea behind this one would be to cast locusts and acid cloud followed by grasping eels (unrelenting grasp might work better for the intent of this build...) to snare the enemies. Then I'd use the pile on to do massive damage (I could swap dead rush here too) and spam toads since they're free. Once again, soul harvest is there as a backup if I get overwhelmed and need to recoup health. Please let me know what you think. Thanks!
