i found this AMAZING site. its so stunning and interesting its insane!
so what do you think? can you understand the size of things here in the universe or are you having trouble thinking about it. its not hard to understand that some people have gone insane from thinking about the size of the universe before we could visualize it like this.
Scale seems irrelevant to me. Things can develop infinitely in any direction. There are no lines in which to judge these things to a constant. You can judge the size of things in relation to others, yes. But when you judge it in relation to something that is exponentially larger than that then size really becomes irrelevant.
In relation to an ant I'm huge. In relation to an atom, an ant is huge. In relation to the earth, I am small. In relation to the sun, the earth is small. In relation to the known universe, the sun barely exists. In relation to infinite space, the size of the universe becomes irrelevant. In this context the definition of universe I am referring to is of the physical universe comprising of mass and energy.
The same can be said of time.

Thanks for the link, OP. It's a nice tool to show how things are related (in size) to other things, no matter how much I "know a lot about our solar system and beyond the milkyway".
...did you see how large the world in Minecraft supposedly is? I wonder if that's true.
i find it hard to try to imagine the size of things, (like the actual size of me vs USA) so to me this is amazing.
when i think about it i imagine myself standing in the middle of usa, imagining the roads, the towns the forests and so on until i reach a huge size, its quite difficult even if you consider citys as "dots" and roads as lines.
still amazes me how large the stars are, as beyond that im just stuck in "aaawwz(zoom)mmeee" mode
Cool application, I always find it crazy how little we know, how mysterious all this is. I really wonder if our minds are strong enough to understand it even if the knowledge was accessible.
Thanks for the link. I ran into version 1 long ago and it blew my mind. They've improved the interface, which is great. I like all the new info boxes as well, not to mention new information like the size of the Minecraft universe. =) I'll have to go through it again later in more detail.
i also think that its quite intresting to look at the small things as well. for example i really found it cool that the blood cells and sutch arent THAT small that one might think!. i really belived they ware smaller!, compare it whit the thickness of the hair example there. its quite cool!
In relation to the known universe, the sun barely exists.
How can something "barely exist"? Don't you either exist or not :)?
And the link is kinda cool, seen it before and even though as Umpa said, scale as a "truth" is rather deceptive, it's still cool to swoop through all the different kinds of things that we have found in the universe..
I don't want to start thinking about the Universe. I've spent too many days thinking about space and the great beyond and then getting depressed and feeling unimportant. But I laughed at the Minecraft reference. I always wondered how big the Minecraft worlds actually were.

The scale is fun, reminds me how small I am but how BIG I'll be in D3!
