I'm trying to get a better understanding of the numbers shown on the character pane in Diablo 3 and I'm curious about how your sheet damage, toughness and healing is calculated (i.e. the numbers below the Primary stats).
Does anyone know the formulas? Or a place that describes them in detail?
Sheet DPS is the range below the shown value averaged then multipled by the attack speed on the weapon. BTW this is a useless Stat. You actually want the Effective DPS. Google it. A lot of builds don't use attack speed as it has no bearing on cooldown skills.
The damage i just asked about myself and created a thread askiing what exactly is weapon damage since there are so many things that do high %s of weapon damage.
Toughness is how much damage it takes to kill you. I cant give you the exact formula, but the general idea is rather obvious. You have your hitpoints. for example 500k. Now you have the average of your resist all. For example 80% damage reduction. So that multiplies your effective hp by 5. Then you have armor, same thing as resist all, another multiplier.
Then you have some things like reduced damage from elites etc etc. I dont know for how much they factor that in. Should obviously not be 100% since you arent fighting only elites, but its probably a pretty big factor since they do so much more damage then normal monsters. (and also you dont really care about your toughness until you actually meet elites)
regeneration seems to be these things added together on my barb:
-health per second
-health per hit * attack speed (meaning they assume you are always attacking. meaning that i prefer an item that helps my regen by 10% trough per second over per hit as this per second also works in those extremely important situations where you actually have to retreat)
-health per rage spend * 7.5 (could be off a little, i tested it but theres some small differences probably due to rounding)
-health globe stuff * small factor (i dont give much value to that myself since its unreliable. Dont yet know for how much the game factors it. Need an item with this bonus and nothing to test it, dont have that)
PS: the health per hit is actually health per attack. AOE attacks only count it once. Your skills also have a bit of an adjusting factor on this. fast skills give less health per attack than slow skills. But fast weapons are absolutely better for your healing trough health per hit than slow weapons.
Sheet DPS is dmg you do while using base attack. So no skill with any rune or anything. Just base attack.
Toughness is how much dmg you can take . For example if you have 100m toughness. In brawling, a friend that hits for 100m will kill you but it will not say 100 m o you because you got armor and all ress. enemies does not.
So toughness is your HP with all those armor and all ress and dmg reductions on.
Its very simple and does not tell you much. Especially DPS one ...

If you read Tolkien 9:4-7 it tells you that the Ents, although peaceful trees, have the power to rip entire boulders out of the ground. That's quite scary.
