If you're like me, and you've recently upgraded to MacOS 10.7 Lion, you were probably upset to discover that - quite unadvertised - Apple no longer supports Carbon or Rosetta. Which means Diablo 2 doesn't play on 10.7 at all.
So why does this thread exist? To teach you how to get back to 10.6.8 and Diablo 2 goodness, of course, or to teach you how to upgrade to Lion without losing your Diablo 2 Launch-ability. If you have no interest in upgrading to 10.7, feel free to stop reading now, this thread won't have any real information for you.
Things you'll need:
1) A minimum of 15 GB of free space on your Hard Disk (though I recommend 20).
2) An internet connection.
3) Your old Mac OS 10.6 install disc.
First, the Lion installer is a new approach for macs, and it's important that you understand how it works. When you buy it from the online store, you get a personal license to download the software for your own personal use. This is unlimited downloads, and unlimited computers, as long as you are the owner and user of those computers and this software. This is important because if you've already downloaded and installed Lion, you're going to want to download it a second time. Don't worry, I'll explain.
With the MacOS 10.7 installer, it is physically impossible to perform a clean install. In addition, the installer deletes itself after installation. So, before installing, I recommend burning a DVD with the installer application on it. This way if your computer takes a dump, you don't have to wait for an installer to download again in order to re-install. At this point, if you haven't already upgraded to 10.7, you want to run system update and make sure that your Mac is up to date with Mac OS 10.6.8. Then run the installer. If you've already upgraded to 10.7, there's no need to install a 2nd time - I just wanted to make sure you had a good install disc for future use. You're welcome.
The installer will change your 10.6.8 system to 10.7 and delete itself. Rad. Now you can't launch Diablo 2 or any other Carbon-based application. Poop. But hey, you now have the shiniest and newest system from Apple!
Launch Disc Utility. Select your Hard Disk, and click the "Partition" tab on the right hand side. Yup, we're going to make a 10.6.8 boot partition purely to play D2. You'll need a minimum of 15 GB of free space to do this, and I recommend 20 just for breathing room. You can always resize your partitions later. Click the little plus sign to make a new partition and set the size to your desired size (again, I used 20). Hit apply and let this run for, well, it can be a couple of minutes or several hours. Just let it do its thing. It is important that you partition using the 10.7 disc utility - don't make the partition prior to upgrading to 10.7 or you can run into drive mounting issues. I'm not saying you will, just saying it's possible.
When the partitioning finishes, restart your computer. After it powers down for the restart, insert your 10.6 install disc and hold down the "C" key to boot from disc. Choose your desired 10.6 install partition, and install away. Again, this can take a long time, anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. Just let it run. Go see a movie. Read a book. When the install finishes, it should automatically restart your computer with the 10.6 partition as the boot disk.
After installing, you need to download the 10.6.8 combo update from Apple. It can be found at: Apple 10.6.8 Combo Update v1.1, 7-25-11
which links to http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399 for those who are "internet forum hyperlink wary." Just copy and paste if you don't want to click the link or it doesn't work for some reason.
Once you've downloaded the update, run it. One more time of 30 minutes to a couple of hours worth of waiting. When finished, you're done! You can boot diablo 2 while running with the 10.6.8 partition (even if diablo 2 lives on your 10.7 drive partition), as well as any other Rosetta or Carbon-based application. Keep in mind that the very first time that you try to run Diablo 2, you'll likely be forced to download Rosetta - that's normal and required to play. To switch between 10.7 and 10.6.8, go to system preferences, Startup Disk, and select the one you want to boot with, then click the Restart button.
Congratulations and have fun!
