I played Diablo II back in the day, but none of my characters were ever "good." Never pushed past Nightmare really. With the advent of Diablo III thingggs seem to have gotten easier and I've had characters push to T3, with the help of copypasta builds and luck of the gear.
I never really understood things in a way. It was more of a "These are the skills and passives you want" and I knew some of the things to look for, but still used the green percentages in gear as a guide for the most part. There wasn't much more to it than that.
With the new patch I wanted to try and understand the game on a deeper level, but I feel very overwhelmed. I listen to streamers talk about items and why so and so is good, but I just can't wrap my head around it. Right now my Crusader is a mishmash or Rolands and legenaries and I'm trying to make it work, but it's a bit of a mess and I feel I'm not living up to my full potential.
Where does one start on the journey to understanding D3, and maybe ARPGs in general. It's a genre I've played most of my life, but it was more about monster slaying than optimization.
A good place to start is to start reading build guides. Often they have a good explanation for why you are picking one skill/item over another. Also start visiting the official D3 forums for your class, often there is some interesting theorycrafting going on there. ALso check out the subreddits for your class, and also for all the classes in general. e.g. the barbarian subreddit has a very good wiki that explains a lot of the basic mechanics of D3.
