Today I want to take advantage of what appears to be a bug (or just a stealth test phase) on PTR, where every item you craft is automatically Ancient. I believe it will only be a 10% chance once the patch hits - just like it is for dropped legendaries - but for now we get to play.
In this video I crafted one of every possible legendary and set item under the 'weapons' category and did a few min-max damage rerolls to show possible damage ranges since this is the main appeal of Ancient weapons. In general, it'll be possible to roll 3k 1-handers and 4k 2-handers just using the 10% modifier. Enjoy!
It very much depends on the items if you're going to want them as ancient items or not. Weapons are most certainly something that's going to be a slot filled with Ancients. The damage range being higher will virtually ALWAYS make it so that you'll do more overall damage than any other weapon. Even legendary powers might be in danger at that point.
Since percantage based stats aren't included in the 30% increase of stats, jewelry will be relatively difficult to upgrade. You'd need an ancient item that rolls perfect from the get go, which has a very small chance of happening. And even when it happens, the damage increase will be small, since it's just going to be main stat that's slightly higher.
Chest and legs are the slots that benefit most, after weapons. These tend to have flat stats that just gain 30% extra. It's a pretty decent increase. Again, not as huge as a weapon, but still, increase.
People will be all over weapons to start, the rest will probably be upgraded at a later point, but the pressure to do so will be a lot lower.
Still, a lot of those weapons aren't including any attack speed increases and damage %. When that starts happening, weapons will have insane damage ranges. Attack speed might not always be useful, but hey, big numbers.
I'll be posting the armor version video soon, but you will want ALL Ancient items eventually. Some are more beneficial at the start than others (weapon for instance), but EVERY Ancient item has better rolls. Chest/pants are actually a good second/third Ancient item to aim for because they have a new, higher armor roll (up to +775). No other slots have this possibility.
Weapons will be a definite first, I found Pants/Boots/Shoulders to be the next best as they might have 3 non % stats giving you 3 stats of ancient value.
Unity is not going to be upgraded.... I have 2 that simply will not be changed : 6%crit, 50%critD / 8%cooldowns , 15%elite, socket. Actually scratch that, if I get an ancient with the same stats I'll wear it for the extra orange border ;p
Crafting will be the go to at the beginning of seasons while you are still searching for items, but IMO it will be ONLY for weapons. Wasting ±80mats for a 10% chance on a crafted piece of armour that is not your set piece...rather save the mats for enchanting.
The only ones to benefit would likely be the tanks. PTR is very kind, its going to be a real chore to grind all the mats for your tank.

Chest/Pants will be very good because of the +775 armor rolls, giving the highest potential armor in the entire game, and also putting it on par with the +78 AR diamond (10:1 ratio, generally). It would be nice if we had another crafted set introduced, but that may not be for a while. Still, Aughild's is VERY good if you can work it in. I agree, the BIGGEST benefit will be to support builds as they can make the most use of crafted items (Born's/Captain's/Aughild's).
I disagree on the cost though. Eventually you just run out of stuff to enchant, or it's simply not worth it to attempt to go from 14% > 15% skill damage on an item. As an example, I just 'finished' on my seasonal condemn sader - P500, 150 hours played, I have EVERYTHING. The only upgrades at this point would have to be found. As such, I've saved up 10k veiled crystals, 3k arcane dust, 3.5k reusable parts, 1.5k death's breaths, and 1k forgotten souls. I have nothing to spend it on.
Still, if you have a Unity for example, the only primary stat that gains anything is the main stat. The rest is a precentage-based stat which doesn't get increased. Therefore, it's not a huge increase. There might be some useful secondaries which get an increase, but very rarely do those matter. The ones that DO, are, again, percentage based. The biggest exception to this rule is probably going to be single resistances, sine those can then roll up to 200, and with a Monk's harmony, you'll be looking at values a Flawless Royal Diamond would give. Otherwise, most stats are just not that interresting I feel.
Single res rolls up to 210 and yes in the case of an ideal unity (cc/cd/elite/socket) the benefit is slight, but your chances of getting an ideal unity AND having it be Ancient is almost 0%, so the point is moot.
