Currently at PL 42 on my WD (190k dps / 55k hp) and I've made a decent hellfire ring and put a radiant star ruby in my helm and with 5 NV stacks my +Bonus EXP gain went from 979 to 1094 and I felt obligated to come here and ask if with my gear, is +115% bonus to xp worth the ~30k dps and ~8k life.
That site is broken at the moment - that calculations are way off.
Measuring your efficiency is always the best - and most accurate - option in any case.
Please tell me what's broken with this site and "way off". Last time I checked all numbers are accurate.
And creating a spreadsheet is not for everyone. It implies that you do the same thing over and over again in a very similar fashion.
For example, the site tells you that in a 4 player, MP10 game with NV5 a Hellfire Ring yields only a 5.7% relative XP increase. Now, if you look at your real DPS (use some calculator or Ghom tests or whatever) and find out that you have more than 5.7% less DPS the ring is not worth it. The statistical variance of doing runs in a randomized game such as Diablo is much higher. Just look at people who do serious spreadsheet comparisons of XP/hour (e.g., Nubtro). You just can't find out a difference of 5% by clocking runs, the game is too random for that.

Take my own setup as an example: MP9, HF Ring, 33% Ruby, HF Ring (follower), Signet (25%, follower). Site tells me I'd have 600% Bonus XP with no NV stacks, where in fact I have 499.9%.
I'd say that's way off.
The site uses this formula here, which means it includes the base XP. I should probably subtract that to make numbers in line with what is shown in-game. So there's always a 100% extra. And I always round everything to the next integer, I think 500% is accurate enough, knowing that it's actually 499.9% doesn't add much and isn't way off.
Actually, I just made this website half a year ago and it got only a few views. Almost forgot about it but when I googled it recently I realized it's been cited in many guides and on many forums, so I wanna be careful with any stealth changes. But I might actually work on my todo list over the weekend...

10% DPS loss doesn't equate to 10% slower killing, though. You're a very smart guy, you should know this!
The only true way to determine what setup yields the best XP/hr for a toon is to do a half dozen runs and some math. Everything else is just a roughshod estimate.

Yeah, you're right about 10% DPS not resulting in 10% increased XP. But what I'm getting is that "numbers don't lie". Real runs always have a very broad statistical variance, unless you use some kind of bot software. Or you're an efficiency machine. Well, some people are - I'm not. Whenever I'm trying to create a spreadsheet I get so bored that after 2-3 runs I do other stuff (like checking DFans or browsing news sites).
Also, if you're comparing ruby vs amethyst gem you might just run in bad elite combos 3 times, die 3 times, and then don't die with a ruby because the RNG gods were in your favor. Of course your ruby run will yield better XP... but it has nothing to do with the stats. It was pure luck and randomness.
Look, I'm not saying running a spreadsheet is bad, but for some people it just doesn't work. And for these people the website gives a good ballpark figure.
-edit- this is on mp10.
