D3 you can tell they are going for a Painterly feeling but they failed
Rendering in brush stokes removes fine structure.
Post hoc ergo propter hoc
Removing fine structure will make it look like brush strokes.
To make it even worse 'Rendering in brush stokes removes fine structure' isn't even true 'Rendering in brush stokes OBSCURES fine structure.'
Gods and Heroes has a "Living Oil Painting" fealing and still has fine structure.
some quotes from Diablo III's art director Bryan Morrison
"Getting back to our core philosophies at Bliz, one of them being stylization over realism. Stylization can sometimes be equated with cartoony or Disney art style. Not what we're going after with Diablo art style."
Well just add a 'cel shading' shader and a 'Fold line' 'inker' and you got one of the best cartoon graphics games ever.
"To give the player something they've never seen before." So you are aiming D3 for people that never played WarCraft/StarCraft?
"If we just took pictures and stuck polygons on them, that's not us doing our job."
don't you mean "If we just took pictures [from the Diablo games] and stuck polygons on them, that's not us doing our job."
It look like you just took pictures from Warcraft2 and stuck polygons on them.
"We wanted to push the idea of bringing a unique, different look to the D3 universe, but not being too cartoony or deviating too far from what the previous games established."
Well if by "unique, different" you mean 'WarCraft2' and by "previous games" you mean the *Craft sereis and by "cartoony" you mean 'disneyesque'(thou I have to give you those two are prety synonymous with the American public) then you succeeded wounderfully.

I'll leave the thread up so there is access to the link, but there has been more than enough "debate" over the art direction, here.
Move on, folks.
