So I came up with this build while I was messing around. I haven't played my WD much since the expansion dropped, so I decided to experiment with skills I've never taken before and just see what happens.
And that's the thing. I'm getting by in T1 a lot better than I thought I would. This build plays a bit dumb—I spend a lot of time standing in the middle of things channelling bats, but the bats do a lot of damage and I kill elites much faster than I expected. It kites pretty well, and the main problem is that I can't channel as long as I'd like. There's a gear issue, obviously, but I'm wondering what I should be specifically gearing for, and if I should be using different passives. I need more resists and armour if I'm going to stand in the middle of things, I guess. How does life on hit work with channeled spells again? Should I use dogs instead of the garg? I'd like to keep the fetish sycophants; the bats seem to provide me with a lot of them, and they really help grind some of the tougher mobs down.
Really, I'm just finding this a super fun build to play, but I don't know if it has legs. T1 while I'm levelling isn't the same as me trying to move up to higher difficulties.
consider swapping your spirit walk rune to honored guest to get a little more mana regen. And since its softcore, you could drop spirit vessel for blood ritual or spiritual attunement or even vision quest to help you with mana problems. If you still have mana problems, you could always drop hex for soul harvest - siphon your soul.
Other than that you'll be able to do the lower torments with decent toughness no problem. Keep in mind though that when you start generating a bunch of fetishes, they'll start tanking mobs all over the place making it difficult to maintain CoB channels with its short range, that's one of the reasons vampire bats is seen as optimal
Hmm, good advice. I find that the delay that I get when I'm running around after hitting spirit walk is enough time to fill my mana pool to something mostly acceptable, and I'm generally using it as a panic button, so I'm kind of counting on the health. But You make a good point about spirit vessel; I'll change it to attunement instead. I don't spend enough time using the primary skills to get a tonne of benefit from vision quest.
I tried vampire bats early on, but it seemed too haphazard for me; I wasn't doing the damage I wanted, even if it was free. With CoB, my fetishes tanking things can work out well when the mobs are a bit tougher because I can park myself and burn them down. I may yet change my mind, but I think part of the fun I'm having is just that this is a weird build. I'll throw myself at some of the bosses and see how I fare. Thanks for the advice!

Here's my character. Obviously, I'm not even 70 yet and this gear is a mish-mash mess, but I'm getting by in T1.
