Yea, yesterday I re-rolled 20% phys to 16% Poison, and it paid out big time. Easily steamrolling most things in T1 on HC :D

I have a poison build and I am in love with it.

    Build: http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/witch-doctor#RlUPQT!YeTh!cbacZb

acid cloud is a very safe spell for hardcore, it lets you dps at full range
Head Hunters (fetish army) is poison damage, gives a nice boost if you have some poison gear
I play gruesome feast over Pierce the veil since it gives me more dps in most cases, aswell as extra mana instead of reduced

    Profile: http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/profile/Jonte-2255/hero/38552674

for starters, my gear isn't maxxed as most videos, if I found a RoRG and tasker gloves, I'd get (50% pet AS gloves obv) 19% more poison from legs, 4 piece zuni(for infinite fetish), and 3 piece aughild(for 15% more dmg)

video (got a little better gear since it was recorded)

Im of the 'Not sure why the poll pigeon-holes you into 2 flavours' group though i personally run a pet doctor build variant myself.

I havent been overly deliberate in stacking %Ele, I got %Physical on my SoJ from the drop and the Magefist were random from Kadala. I found the Sanguinary's on my barb hence the Int Roll. I got a Poor Jeram's, No Zuni's and a 2 piece Crafted set and would say my overall gear is avg.

I made this post an either/or one, because I played (WD died...) a pet doctor build, and those only seem to be flexible with Fire/Poison, or all physical.

currently I am using cold with frost burns and an azuwrath and cold% on bracers. It's working really well and I can basically freeze lock with frozen pirahnas and cold bears and spirit barrage

I'm envious of your azurewrath. I am also running with frostburns and the cc is amazingly effective. I have my templar using Rimeheart to add to the build. Very strong build and great in Co-op, especially for HC.

yea that's one of the main reasons I'm using this cc build. I play hardcore and it works well solo and parties. Plus azurwrath was one of the first weps I found and then rolled some frost burns from kadala. I'm also using haunt. I think this is a good build but it's very gear specific. still looking for pieces that for well with this build. Post any suggestions you have

    Phys+Fire for pet builds

    Cold for jade set build

Poison for t1 fastruns builds only. No place for poison on higher torments now.

For jade u should use Poison and Cold cause u need the 16 second swarm rune with 2000%dmg :D

Poison, because fire is completely useless on Witch Doctor. Firebats fire runes are a joke in ROS. Explosive beast doesn't even compete in anyway with zombie bears, the firebomb signature spells are also a joke and do not compete with the mana you get back from spirit barrage/rune of essense, or poison dart - spined dart/vision quest. Flame dart is a horrible single target spell, in fact most of the Witch doctors signature spells are utterly useless. They just don't do enough damage. Poison all the way without doubt, your options are much greater. The only other option is physical vs poison. But unless you are doing a pet specific build, which most are, poison is the way to go.

LOL completely and utterly wrong. Fire is one of if not the best to stack for a WD. Just for using Fire dogs and Wrathful protector it is worth it alone. ALso once you have the correct gear set up firebomb with flash ire works great.

Currently in my Fire gear and spec:

IMO, both poison and fire are great options and provide a number of pros and cons. Both options are viable at t6 difficulty. Both options provide good single player benefits as well as group benefits. Both options are very gear dependent and require specific spells for maximum spell synergy.

Since I'm in my fire gear and spec, I'll point out some of the positives that have worked for me. As you can see, all my active dps spells are fire and thus, will benefit from any +fire% stats. The top positives for using a fire build are the use of Garg-WP, Dogs-fire, FA-Tiki and Vampire Bats and here is why:
    1. Garg-WP is arguably the highest dps spell we have with the lowest resource cost and effort to use. I have personally seen numbers over 300M on crit hits and I'm sure I have not seen the highest recorded. Garg-WP is basically a "one button win".
    2. Burning Dogs can be used with the TMF ring to create a "mini garg" or can be used individually for tanking and dealing additional fire aoe damage across a larger portion of your screen. They also provide toughness while used with the Uhk Serp mojo which is a large buff for t6. It's effectively a ~30% boost to your total toughness stat.
    3. FA-Tiki are arguably the best FA rune for proc'ing the SMK because the torch can hit multiple targets at once thus, rapidly reducing the cool down of your FA and BBV. I have personally had up to 4 BBV going at the same time and I'm sure others could get even more.
    4. Vampire bat is the highest fire dps spell that a WD can chain cast with the lowest resource cost (free to channel). It can pierce mobs in its effective range and thus, has great synergy with area damage stats. and, as I said be fore its FREE to channel allowing you to use the PtV passive without any any additional resource strain.

I feel my build and gear have a lot of synergy and have helped me successfully navigate t6 both solo and in a group with ease. Feel free to comment and provide any feedback. I'm always looking for ways to improve so any insight would be helpful.

Yall realize that this thread was necro'd and the majority of the posts were from before the last patch right? Things were very different then, no point in arguing with old posts.
