I recently posted up a concept build I was doing on paper. (I didn't actually test it in game, since I still haven't had the luxury of getting a Calamity.)
I completely agree with a lot of what what's been said so far. Even though DH has received a few good and welcomed buffs, there's still not enough verity in gear to build powerful builds, and that's not considering that many of the DH's channeled abilities (thou-buffed) still don't offer enough in terms of damage for the cost. (let alone the complete lack of aoe)
There simply isn't an efficient way to generate and regenerate Hatred to make anything but M6 worth it. The dps drops off severely if you're hatred starving yourself.
Though I've read a little and heard through the grapevine that M6 Cold is making strong wakes(particularly in its control and survive ability) but it's still a M6 build. I personally love Strafe (clearly, considering how I wrote my build explanation), and as much as I would love to be able to withstand being in melee range, fan of knives would be fun too! But alas, DH's are far too squishy to even attempt to lock yourself in a stationary animation surrounded by baddies for even a second.
What's left is running around, staying out of range and taking pot shots at your enemies, and what works best with that playstyle? M6.
What's most disappointing for me (besides finding out that Calamity doesn't use the rune of your Marked for Death if you have it on your bar) is that, despite the bonus getting reworked, Shadow Set and Natalya's still are lack luster, or completely suck(Looking at you Shadow). Now Shadow Power use's all of its runes? So... for 5 seconds I can run away with my tail between my legs? It's more like Smoke Screen now (How many 'Oh shit' buttons do we need? Apparently more, with a whole set to make you look even more pathetic when you run away!)
Natalya's on the other hand is decent. The extra discipline and crit is nice, and the reduction on Rain's CD is good too for a cold build. (The Cold rune is kinda the best.)
I look forward to being able to testWojahnni Assaulter. I hope the damage boost makes Rapid Fire's buffed 685% weapon damage worth it, but the hatred cost is just brutal... Again, it's likey not going to be worth it or comparable to M6 specifically because of the cost, and lack of aoe.
Demon Hunter is my favorite class, but time and time again, I keep coming back to it when I think I've found something good AND FUN, but finding that it simply can't reach high torment. I don't play Diablo 3 to 'be the best' or anything, I wanna have fun, foremost, and play a build that lets me do that. M6 is boring, so much of the playstyle is waiting. Waiting for my Sentry CD, waiting for my Hatred to fill so I can shoot another Cluster Arrow. Waiting for my Pets to Nom a mob to death. Fleeing for my life, dodging and weaving between my Sentries. None of that feels like I'm actually battling, or being stylish, or even shooting the mobs a whole lot. It's all burst Dps explosions and battlefield control. There's not even luring your enemies into traps(unless you're fleeing to your previous pack of sentries, because you just got flat footed by an elite pack.)
Anyway, I've voiced my opinions. Hopefully it might carry onto the screen of a Dev, or blueposter. I just got sick and tired of being disappointed and wanted to at least say I tried to make a difference by saying what I felt.
After I've thought on it a while, I'll make a new thread with graphics and sparklies, illustrating some constructive feed back instead of just say "This sucks, I'm upset!" Until then... I will mourn my Strafe Build. (God damn stupid Calamity's rune being total bullshit...)
I appreciate your efforts on writing a Strafe guide, i remember having a lot of fun in Vanilla with Demolition/Shuriken Cloud/Punishment... but even back then it wasn't fast enough compared to Elemental Arrow for low MP and fell off quite quickly in high MP where Rapid Fire and Spike Traps with perma Gloom shined.
When i got my full Marauder set i played a bit more but i stopped after few days because i knew nothing else would be viable for efficient farming and that's sad. Now Blizzard buffed a bunch of spells, Strafe included, which will make the start of season a lot better for me because i like using different spells, but as soon as i want to tackle Greater Rifts it will be M6 or bust and that's a shame and a contradiction to build diversity advertised so much, but i'm delusional, there will always be a build that will be better than everything else by some margin....
Well, in the end there has to be a "best build" because perfect balancing is not actually possible. The Mara6 set bonus is really powerful but compensates with the fact we're going to fill every slot with a set piece, so we're passing over other legendaries synergies which can be really useful.
Also, the existence of a best gear makes all of us strive to get to that point, which is a great "carrot on the stick" for everyone, especially since there's no trading in game.
The point is that Mara6 has everything - damage, control, survivability, great synergies with other items and so on. It's really well designed - the strenght of let's say Natalya is that apart the bonuses, you can use a weapon to get set bonuses freeing another slot for a great legendary; still, no setup can even reach similar heights, and that's the problem.
I have a different idea for my next buildwhich involves a different strategy, but a) no use of T&T so it may be less viable just for that and b) it's still a Mara6 based setup because it's strong and it complements the build ina really good way.
