Good afternoon everyone. I just re-bought D2 and LOD for the third time about 2 months ago and I have been having some trouble, but I have put off fixing it since I still play WoW fairly frequently. Now, on the other hand, I am ready to start putting together a new necro. The problem I have is that the game will install and run, after about a half hour of option toggling, but I can only get it to run for a short while. When I leave and try to go back into the game and continue, the game crashes. Also, I can't seem to get it to run with the perspective option. I am currently trying to run it on Vista. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I know this has been covered once before, but I can't seem to find it anymore. Thanks for your time.
I dont know about the running on vista problem, it could even be some other peice of hardware.
but, i think you have to run the d2 video test first to be able to toggle the perspective on/off
Try running the game in Administrative mode. Otherwise go check out the b.net help forums if your crashing issue persists. A good number of games will crash a bit or refuse to start if you're not them running as administrator.

What options do you toggle?
How do you run the game, from Cds, CD images or d2loader or something else?
When the game crashes do any error messages come up or does it just end?

I toggle the file run properties such as, run in (os selection), 256 colors, low resolution, those ones. I had perspective working, but it runs sooo slow that it's not even worth using. I guess the card I use isn't supported. As for the crash, so long as I'm playing the character for the first time, it will play just fine. However, when I save and quit then try to come back, it won't go past the loading screen. I tried reinstalling it, but that didn't fix it. I may just have to deal with not playing until Diable 3 comes out.
I was never too sure why but in your diablo 2 folder theres some save files for online play.. i know these files dont actually hold the character infomation you use on battle.net but i allways wandered why they were there... maybe its something to do with those? i think its weird that it works for the first time and then only glitches when you try and reload it the second time you play.
Maybe you should look at www.blizzard.com or google for answers on diablo 2 vista compatibility, or have you done this already?
You could send an email to blizzard?
Good morning. Sorry, but I haven’t had a decent opportunity to test the solutions as of yet. It's been quite crazy here at work for past few weeks. I will be sure to jump on the offered trouble-shoots to see what I can come up with. Once again, thanks for the assistance.
