I was under the impression that items on the ground didn't disappear as long as at least one person stayed in the game, and that it was safe for me to store extra things on the ground by my stash while doing quests. However I left an item by my stash, did a quest, and then it was gone when I came back. This was in a passworded game when I was just playing by myself, so no nobody took it. So how does it work for items on the ground?
things poof (ie disappear) if you leave them for too long.
white and socketed and runeword items go first, then gems, runes and chips, then charms, then rare, magic, set, and unique items.
i don't remember the exact timers (if i ever knew them) but it's like between 5 and 10 mins that the first stuff (the white/socketed/runeword) will start to go
if you want to keep something from poofing then go pick it up and drop it again(even just on your cursor or try to pick it up and be unsuccessful at it so that it bounces up and down) and it will reset the timer.
best not to leave valuables on the floor
edit: now im doubting whether or not whites vs gems go first. can't remember and it bugs me.
but anyway basically those kinds of things that you run across most will go first
oh.. and gold (and arrows and bolts and tps and potions etc ) go even before that!

they'll never see me coming.. life is a sequence of tragedies, inconsistent only by fleeting, elusive moments of pleasure,
serving only to ensure absolute vulnerability to the pain of their inevitable absence.
Too bad the devs for diablo three are finding it way too difficult to allow this to happen in Diablo 3. They claim that objects left on the ground in a 3D environment bogs down the servers too quickly.
