Build Guide
Quin69 here!
>>>UPDATED FOR 2.2<<<
29/05/2015
Hey boyz! Season One & Two - Rank 1 monk (world) here!
In my opinion/experience this build is currently one of the strongest possible monk setups for solo competitive greater rift laddering (season 3).
Please note: I always keep my diablo fans guides up to date and will be making adjustments to the guide whenever there is a shift in endgame meta! so be sure to check back, and vote on the guide!
Basic game-play strategy:
- Hold down spirit generator
- Use breath of heaven on cooldown (when in combat)
- Use inner sanctuary on cooldown (when in combat)
- Use Epiphany on cooldown
- Drop spirit as needed with dashing strike (don't spam - because you will waste the charges and lose dps)
Skill variations:
- Fists of Thunder - Wind Blast (For use with APD Bracers)
- Crippling Wave - Tsunami (For use with APD Bracers, less DPS ~ more survivability)
Passive variations(+hellfire bonus):
- Alacrity
- Guardians Path
Stat Priority:
- Helm: Socket>Crit
- Shoulders: 15% Dash Damage>RCR>CDR
- Torso: x3 Sockets>15% Dash Damage>30% RCR>20% Fire
- Legs: x2 Sockets
- Gloves: ChC>RCR>CHD
- Rings: Socket>RCR>Crit>IAS>CDR
- Waist: 15% Life
- Wrist: 20% Fire damage>ChC
- Amulet: Socket>ChD>ChC=20% Fire>Dex
- Weapon: LPH > LPSS > RCR > Vit
you want dex/secondary resist on all your pieces(where possible)
People WITHOUT flying dragon:
Furnace is OK. But the build is heavily reliant on a flying dragon.
FAQ:
Q: Why am i getting instantly killed g45+?
A: This spec is extremly fragile, and you will die... Alot (with bad mobs). 1200+ All resistance | 16,000+ Armour | 500,000+ Health - Is a good amount to be around.
Q: What gem should i put in my helmet socket?
A: Diamond. CDR = Dmg + Survivability!
Q: What normal gems should i put in my chest/pants?
A: Emeralds, Moarrrr DMG!
Q: What follower should i use?
A: Templar. Why? Inspire (x1.1 ALL spirit generation).
Q: What procs APD's?
A: Freeze = Stun.

I've followed the build closely and indeed I get awesome damage but something in the gameplay I'm not getting right: I keep losing all spirit almost at once. I try to do generator then spender etc. but it makes no difference. What am I doing wrong?
Excellent build....
I have ancient everything now cept rings, which is negligible. My FD is top too. Yet this build lacks compared to my Innas 2 pc and Raiment 6pc. I have an Ancient Innas as well. Both weapons are 4400 dmg. However i still struggle 46+. Affixes just own me. I dont use hellfire, i have posion amulet. Not sure if hellfire will make the difference. I seem to do better when i swap out goguk for estoeric too. If anyone has any suggestions Id love to hear them.
Acps
Fun build. My only problem is Dashing Strike is very very touchy. One button press keeps firing off 2 dashes.
I'm a tuck at 49. I need ancient shoulders and helm. My ancient FD has 10 percent damage but I rolled that and I don't have as much lph as needed. My fd is 4400 with the damage roll, should I change it for 30k lph?
FD i good enough, i have normal version 3.6k dps and 22k LOH is okey for high greater rift progression, im already done 53 lvl, and see that enough dmg for 53+ without ancient version, proc really insane affix compensate survivability and dmg boost, better then any other weapon 4.2k+. gizzard not enough for survivability, if u wanna more survivability u should use 2 one handers + guardian path passive, really much easier survive even using paragon LOH, primary skill - FOT - wind blast. but LOH really prio roll better than 10% dmg. First u should create build for rift test if u see that dps is really low and u ran out off time on good rift then try to change some stats when u find the best composition.
mouse 1 button just switch option in windows settings first button to second thats it . but im really like use shift + 1 mouse key hold down, ofc every1 have own playstyle.
Mara is really good stuff for rift progression, and for some rift guardians is really huge dmg boost, Quin69 build is also good u can switch one passive sixt sense to alacrity if u using esoteric alteration, ofc u should have around 40-50k toughness without buffs and u really able to do 50+, use FoT wind blast for more survivability.
was playing a DH for months now i am back to my monk love my 2 bill crits! Thank you Quin!
Thanks so much for this build! Best build for Monk this season
I am having issues with my Flying Dragon not seeming to proc as often... Yesterday everything was grand- running grift level 46 solos, carrying my friends who are not as well geared through level 40...
Today I am having trouble with like level 40 solo... I can still do it, but it's taking AT LEAST twice as long. NOTHING on my build has changed, all of my gear is the same. The ONLY difference is that I have gained some paragon levels and continued adding them according to this spec.
If i get a hellfire amulet with one of the other skills for this build, should i just replace that selected skill with alacrity or should i double up on the skill? (mine is Sixth sense).
The obvious answer is to use the dragon... When your IAS proc's your DPS will double, and you'll get life on hit... DPS on the weapon is really quite irrelevant.
Quin I love your bulds and I use them like my bible, but I must make one comment. My hellfire ammy has Seize the Initiative so I have an open skill to choose. I chose alacrity and for awhile it was great, but as good as is it, Momentum is just better. Its literally 20% more damage the entire time. If I was using Furnace or dual wielding I would perhaps consider it, but the speed from FD makes Momentum a no brainer. My 2 cents
cant get those spirit guards
If u use Alteration gem, sixt sense gives only ~14% non physical reduction, So better use near death expierence.
wind blast also good for controling bosses and elite packs , ect, really better survivability, if FD proc enough. this build is all about atack speed, so other options only one handers is viable (i would like to test this set 2 one handers rogue + salander), more constant dps, but FD have high burst, and if u have some pylons, boss faster down with FD then other weapons. Furnance is really slow (better option without FD, Utar roar + Azurewrath or Sun keeper or any high dps weapon) also 1 handers + guardian path have dodge a lot = toughness more, then u can try Fire dashing strike = + 15% attack speed ( Burning sankis for survive + (any faster or with elemental dmg weapon)). FD = BIS => 52+ grifts.
How long did it take youto get a decent Hellfire Amulet? I've rolled 68 of them, I stocked up with a buddy and did them all at once. I got a couple decent ones but even those weren't worth keeping. I play on Xbox One, does that make a difference? Or do I just have awful luck? And I can't seem to find any good Eye of Etlich. Do you have any suggestions on farming ornother options? I know it's a silly question but you're a pro and I'd like your opinion.
boots: stats prio: All resist + movement speed. if u using raiment. for 30+ grifts enough in-geom without focus restraint, and nemesis bracers. if u go 40+ u need RORG + unity + spirit guards weapons Utar roar + sun keeper( or azure wrath) . And sixth sense switch to guardian path if u using one handers. ofc u should have ~40% crit chance 400%+ crit dmg, all rez minimum 1k+ gems esoteric, gogok, bane of trapped. dont use that set if not ancient weapons, 100 res is nothing if low dmg. U need both weapons ancient, utar roar not so hard to craft, + ~20% cold dmg is mucch better. and link your armory much easier to help.
And raiment set parts with some good secondary stats: resist, reduce dmg from meele/ range ect.. is much better then ancient parts without that stats.
While I'm not quin, I think I have the answers you are looking for:
1. Flawless boots would be Dex > Vit > Armor = 12%MS = 210 Physical Resist > 210 other secondary Resist > Immobilize% > Health Globe
Why is this the case? Because almost all of your healing should be coming from your weapon/weapons and bracers (ideally), so you do not need LPS on your boots. You need to stack as much Physical Resistance as you possibly can since that is the only resist that Esoteric Alteration does not boost at all. Immobilize% is better than Health Globe as it helps lock down those annoying mobs who do nothing but run (though you should probably skip those anyway and aim for more density).
2. I feel your pain on the FD, it took me until paragon 628 to find my ancient FD, and I had only found two non-ancients before that while funneling every single blood shard into kadala... and FD is supposed to be one of the MOST common Dai-baos... RNG at it's finest! Still, you should be hitting for much more than that with dashes... It sounds like you are missing a lot of CHD, which is strange since you said you are dual-wielding. I couldn't tell you for sure without seeing your gear... As for the Focus, it's just rng, sorry. I personally had to use an Intelligence Restraint for a while since I could not get a dex one to drop for me, so maybe you could grab one from someone who doesn't need one even if its not dex. No matter how horribly it rolls it will STILL be an enormous damage increase for you since the buffs from Focus and Restraint and non-additive multipliers. This means that no matter what other skills you are using or what gear you have they are a 125% damage increase.
3. On the crafted weapons, I strongly advise you do one of three things:
a. Craft an ancient Utar's Roar that can get a good cold% 10% damage, dex, and a good damage range. After you do that find An offhand with a good LoH roll on it. LoH is arguably THE most important stat on your weapons, even more-so than 10% damage. After-all, you aren't doing damage if you are dead...
b. Obtain a decent In-geom and wreck t6 as fast as you possibly can to try and force a flying dragon to drop with the sheer quantity of drops. I personally use a non-ancient In-geom in my offhand while using an ancient weapon in my mainhand and that works fine for me.
c. This is likely your best bet. Craft a Toughness Orientated Borns Shoudlers Chest and Weapon, Cain's Pants Boots and Gloves, and a Hellfire Ring. Now go find a good Leoric's Crown and Ring. Find an Ingeom and get 10% cdr on it. Find an amulet that gives you a lot of toughness, ideally an immunity amulet, fire if you can find it. Get a toughness focused Nemisis Bracers or Strongarms. For every single one of these items forsake damage for CDR, RCR, Vitality, and LoH. With all this, use Quin's Leech XP farm build and find a 4 man group to speed farm Grifts with by recycling keys (of offering to use your own). It should be fairly simple to join a grift community and find a group that can speed clear 35-45 grifts in about 2 minutes a rift. This method is the best of the three, since it will skyrocket your paragon level at an insanely fast rate while also drowning you in legendaries and blood shards.
If you need/want any further help toss me a PM! I have managed to solo 50+ grifts, so I like to think i'm doing something right heh.
@Quin:
I would like to pick your brain a bit:
1. In the best care scenario would you run LPH on your bracers over Vit? I would guess at a yes since they have the low Vit range and high LPH range. What about the helm? Less sure since it has the high Vit range and you are definitely not running vit on your gloves or weapons...
2. Do you prefer an Eye of Etlich or Hellfire, assuming near identical primaries and a usable Hellfire passive?
3. You say you like the dual wielding of 5 primary 1h weapons, and your results speak for themselves. What do you think of the possibility of using Little Rogue and the Slanderer? Obviously no 5 primaries here, but the 30% attack speed might make them a viable alternative to flying dragon no? With an ideal setup of LPH on your bracers you could likely get away with running 10% cdr on one and LPH on the other, though I'm not sure if that would be enough to still get the CDR you need to have the 100% uptime on blinding flash or not. I also am wondering if they might buff LR/S in the next patch or not, since Blizzard has said that it will be the "weapon's patch, like this was the ring's patch". If so, I look forward to what they might do.
Ugh, Don't you wish Dashing strike was based on your MH only and didn't alternate on each use? Would love not needing 10% damage on both weapons...
4. What are your thoughts on the Mythic Rhythm passive instead of Alacrity? I seem to recall you yourself once claiming that that passive is a non-additive multiplier... so even if it is only affecting every other dash or so, it would still be a flat 20% damage increase... I know that Alacrity is a massive multiplicative attack speed boost with the FD proc, but I still am curious as to what you think as I have seen some of the 56+ solos using it. Do you know how Mythic Rhythm counts hits? It is every single individual punch, or is it every combo hit? I really wish it had an indicator...
5. At what point would you stop focusing on Physical secondary resists to the detriment of the others? Yes I know why we do it, but is there a magic number that it just becomes worth more to start balancing them a bit again due to diminishing returns? If there is do you focus on Fire, poison, or lightning next or just do whatever? Which element would you say is the Least valuable?
6. Are the ideal shoudlers Dex/CDR/RCR/DS% or Dex/CDR/Allres/DS%? How much do you value that RCR%? I would figure that with near 100% uptime on Epiphany and BoH that it becomes less valuable. Is there a magic number of RCR% that helps to reduce how often you can accidentally deplete your charges?
7. On your charges, do you try to stay at one base charge or two for your dash charges? I have been trying to stay at one so that my baseline charge is always generating a new charge, thus reducing the punishment duration where I mistakenly used them all... Though with the amount of CDR you are running this may be less of an issue, given how you were spending them all in your 57 solo video and not slowing down too much...
8. I was somewhat unfortunate and my Flying Dragon did not come with Max Spirit as a secondary. Would you say it is worth it to put some paragon points into increasing my cap a bit to reduce potential spirit overcap? If so, how many?
9. I've seen you bouncing back and forth on this, but do you think that CDR/CC/CHD Focus/Restraints are better than Dex/CDR/CC ones? Assuming both are ancient with good secondary rolls of course. I would imagine that the answer changes based on a number of factors like how much dex you have, and if you are dual wielding or not... but are there any magic numbers to aim for? I'm sure that at some point the answer is just CC/CHD/CDR, since paragon levels will eventually push that dex high enough to upset the balance and CHD is limited by gear... I'm just curious if you know the actual numbers for DW and 2h while assuming perfect rolls on all CHD rolls in all relevant slots.
10. I am sort of stuck at grift 51 solo right now... In 50+ grifts, what elite affixes and mob types do you think are worth skipping? Do you think it might be worth skipping elites altogether and just power clearing the white mobs in some cases in higher grifts? At what point does 'fishing' become so all-important? I've managed 51s fairly consistently, but have struggled with 52+ so far... Even though I have finished 51s with plenty of time to spare... My gear is fairly optimized, if lacking when it comes to ancient to non-ancient ratio... pretty much only my helm, weapon, and bracers are ancient... That said, do you think I just need more ancient items to push me over that block, or would skipping more elites and 'fishing' make all the difference? A bit of both? I would imagine that higher dex would make a noticeable difference, since I am only at about 8100 (no dex on my focus and all diamonds).
Those are the most important of my questions, and I would really like to see what you think!
