Build Guide
Check out my 2.2 wizard builds in this thread 2.2 Wizard Builds
IMPORTANT NOTE: guide needs to be updated, a few players tested with mammoth hydra and found out that it does maximum dmg when casted right near the mobs (the farther u cast it the more dps u lose) http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/17085850012?page=1 and with this knowledge Black Hole actually becomes a very desirable skill since it can gather all the mobs in one point, and we can cast both hydras in melee range of that point in order to achieve maximum dps. So, I take back everything I said bad about BlackHole before. This new found mechanic should also bump the ceiling of this build a bit, and I'm willing to say we can hit GR58+ with it on season, but this is just an assumption, can't test yet since I don't have a SerpentSparker. I'm also starting to doubt this will be the top build for progression, since Vox might have created a stronger build around AetherWalker/meteor/rcr: http://www.diablofans.com/forums/diablo-iii-class-forums/wizard-the-ancient-repositories/116841-gr-58-aetherwalker-build-made-by-vox but again, can't test and compare the builds yet, maybe others can test and let me know

BUILD DESCRIPTION
In my opinion this build is the strongest build for solo (and maybe even group) greater rifts. In season 3 I am absolutely certain it can reach GR 55 with suboptimal gear, rift fishing required. In nonseason, with almost perfect gear, and with an old TalRasha offhand that can roll hydra damage% it can hit 58+ with extreme rift fishing.
You can use a variation of this build in groups too, with Focus+Restraint, but you need to have a puller (i.e crusader/monk) and a support wd. The boss will be a big problem, due to the lack of range. You might also lag the game when hydra hits the 2.5 APS bp, see below. LE: seems like the gamelag problem disappeared when patch hit live, there are groups that have cleared 65+ with melee wizards hitting even 3.33 hydra bp.
Physical % on helm and boots is meteor dmg%, there was no category for it.
Poison % on shoulders, chest and source is hydra damage%, there was no category for it. If u play season (like me :p) u will be unable to get a TR offhand that can roll hydra, meteor dmg% is the only option on the post 2.2 offhands.
If you wear homing pads, town portal when you are in trouble, so you get the shield. Thx to John Prodigy for asking the shoulders question, gave me the idea to add Homing Pads.
Build variations:
- As Atu pointed out in the comments, we can swap ArcaneTorrent for Meteor-Thunder Crash, so we get more damage; but from my tests on PTR we cannot possibly sustain both Meteor and Blizzard-Frozen Solid; so if you decide to run Meteor, you have to use Blizzard-Snowbound in tandem with it, you will lose the ability to freeze annoying ranged mobs , but you get more damage in return; Tbh I like the Frozen Solid build variation, it requires less fishing, but it is your decision to make!
- If u die too much, replace meteor dmg on helm with vitality.
- Can drop Gizzard for Toxin/Iceblink if you don't need the life regen and want more damage.
Black Hole is not optimal for this build; we already have a lot of cc, and it's cooldown reduces the TalRasha 4 stacks uptime, you can hit a higher GR without this skill!- You can interchange the vitality and attackspeed from gloves and wand; keep one of each, depending on what items u find
- LE: this gamelag problem might have been fixed on live, not 100% sure. If your game lags when u are near mobs u will need to replace painenhancer with toxin; the causes are the hydras reaching 2.5 APS and the inherent dynamical attack speed coming from painenhancer that stresses the server-client connection (Blizzard pls fix); this is a big DPS hit sadly, with toxin we can barely reach 100+ flame blade stacks in high density maps, pain enhancer can get us to 200+ stacks. So it's a double DPS loss, the hydra APS and the blade stacks.
Audacityand hydra dmg% are each in their own class of multipliers, do not drop them LE: I was wrong by picking Audacity, it does not affect the hydra damage, thx bcrumbler for pointing out my big mistake! You can use Unstable Anomaly/ Unwavering Will/ Cold Blooded/ Blur instead of it!
Why am I not using Enforcer? : I do not recommend the enforcer gem, it is additive with elemental dmg (they are in the same damage multiplier class), and from bracers+flame blades we can stay at 100%-200% fire damage while hitting lots of mobs (using pain enhancer) . Enforcer would just make it 130%-230%, so clearly not worth. Enforcer would be helpful during the boss fight though. I recommend pain enhancer/toxin/iceblink/BOP as a second dmg gem (BoT and Gizzard are mandatory imo, but maybe it is possible to drop Gizzard for a 3rd damage gem for rly high pushes, though it will be hard to survive). Pain enhancer is the best damage-wise, but in my GR61 video I was forced to use toxin gem, since the pain enhancer was shooting my ping above 1000. If the enhancer didn't cause lag GR 65 would have been in range.
You will need attack speed on at least 2 pieces of gear and from paragon points in order to hit the 2 APS hydra breakpoint. Go here if u want to learn more: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/15270729572
The play style is very aggressive, you will see in my videos. Teleport into mobs, keep TR stacks up, buff your fire elemental dmg to extreme levels with spectral blade, cast arcane dynamo empowered hydras. Arcane torrent is used in order to aggro packs of mobs that are out of range, and blizzard is good for freezing at range and the elemental stack. You survive with the help of the bracers, by keeping the mobs perma frozen/stunned around you. Desecrator/plagued/molten affixes are your friends, frost nova is spammed while u stand in them. High Greater Rifts that mainly consist of ranged enemies will be hard to finish (moon clan impalers, bogan trappers are instant skip). Also beware elites with frozen affix and for that matter, any other mobs that can stun, your ice armor will stop casting frost nova when u are frozen/stunned, so u will die.
Have fun!
Why not lightning meteor instead of AT ?
Why do we use Pauldrons of the Skeleton King or Death Watch Mantle for shoulders?
What are some alternatives to SS until I find a good ancient one?
What's a good replacement of Unity for Grift in groups? Would RoRG work well, letting me use a Hell Fire Ammy or Trimruvate?
Thanks for the guide!
I've had pretty good success with Wave of Force - Static Pulse instead of Arcane Torrent/Meteor, what are your thoughts on that as a replacement?
Audacity does NOTHING for Hydra.
It will affect both meteors and Spectrals, tho its still not even remotely close to Hydra's output, can easily drop it.
Question, why Nilfur's Boast boots when not using meteor? Maybe something else with a more useful legendary power?
Can someone point out to me where firebirds comes in to play with this build? If you notice in video the first death is eluded by firebirds 2nd life...??? someone help me out here or is the video just a general guide and NOT the actual build?
Wow, as a Witch Doctor, I am jealous of your toughness.
Also, since you also have lag with certain circumstances. This is not just Wizards, but also double Carnevils, for example, will lag the fuck out of everyone's game. Also possible one Carnevil may, with two or more IAS boosts from allies and BBV.
Played with your build and made a few adjustments, would love your input:
Passives:
1.) Prodigy (instead of Illusionist) for AP generation while charging AD
2.) Arcane Dynamo
3.) Elemental Exposure
4.) Blur (instead of Unstable Anomaly)
Lightning Spender: Electrocute - Surge of Power (fastest casting to charge AD and for AP generation)
Fire Spender: Mammoth Hydra
Arcane Spender: Wave of Force - Arcane Attunement (each enemy hit gives +4% arcane damage to next arcane spell - I'm assuming your Tal meteor counts??? needs testing). Or Disintegrate - Intensify for 15% increase damage from arcane spells for 4s (again not sure if Tal meteor can benefit)
Cold Spender: Blizzard - Frozen Solid
Item wise, I choose to stack +meteor dmg to 55% and hydra to 30%.
I also add in a Meteor Spell to spam with the increased AP generation from Prodigy and Surge of Power. I've tried Meteor Shower and Thundercrash and I'm more inclined to say Thundercrash is better because its instant damage. I like to charge all 4 Tal elements, then unleash all my AP with Thundercrash at full stacks, works great for RG fight.
The reason I choose not to use Teleport - Calamity is because I play console, I cannot reliably target the middle of the pack I want to teleport into so I had to figure out some other Arcane spender to use. I did play PC during ROS release until end of season 1 but found it too much of a grind. Console is more laid back, and you get access to all seasonal items at the start of a season...think of it like playing the PTR. I enjoy sitting on the couch a lot more too.
Awesome! Thanks for the reply...and the insight! I didnt know that casting Teleport/Calamity gave you the stack even though it doesnt hit stuff. I guess I will try it again but it definitely is not like PC where I would no doubt be using it along with Illusionist!
Noted regarding the flame blades, I actually really wanted this to work and the videos I saw were huge density type, open maps that it worked great on, but how's the up time on the RG? I had a hard time staying in melee range and keeping the stacks from falling off...then again im console so maybe thats my downfall. Was just trying to make up for the damage by trying Meteor spam. I will pose my question to your friend Mordikay and see what he thinks regarding AP regen using a primary skill along with Prodigy to supplement a more Meteor-centric build. But I do agree, Teleport Calamity is too good to give up.
Hmm.. One ranged rift and its all over it seems relying on the Defenders. I never run unity because i don't believe thats true potential relying on a follower Reduction. I've gotten to 57 completion with just Tal 6 Focus Restraint so. It's a nice setup though.
That builds arc lightniing is sole purpose for Dynamo hydras. Electrocute Lightning blast is better imo since the ranged helps dps the RG as well as the same Dynamo charge rate.
I might have to drop the F R though. seems tals limit is about 59 if you get a nice zombie rift for progression. Only issue i've come up with is Ghosts siphons , and Blood clan spear tossers lol. Other than that the Halo works good with Defenders. Shame Jailer still nearly knocks us down even with Tal Arcane absorb powered up. =/
Heh well since i rearranged some of my setup for Tals ive managed to take down 58 now with 20 fire 6 crit 29% Ancient Strongarms.. However, on the console with the double damage perk with neph globes i tried your setup and cleared 64 . I changed Static Torrent to Supermassive black hole for the lightning + cluster further ranged trash mobs to instantly kill them . I ran a few crappy rifts with ghost elites and such and managed 64 on them as well. goal is to get rid of any ranged threats soon as possible. I recommend trying the blackhole. its handy for even blue packs to skip them if needed. As well as Small size yellows.
I used a 65,000 Gizzard , 40% Zeis and a 35% Bane of the trapped. Frozen solid + Hyrdra with bane and zeis can be a powerhouse heh
Keeep in mind that 64 on console was witha basic unity with no CC CHD. Confirmed the build is more viable than Delseres 4 + Tal 6
I'll test it out on PC today .
So far PC 58 - Tal 6 Focus Restraint StrongarmSet
Console 64 , Melee Fire ice Build - Supermassive Blackhole sub for Static torrent
i feel that im doing worse when i play the melee build, I've cleared 50 in 9min with focus and restraint setup in solo. I struggle at lot with the melee version damage wise . Maybe it's my non-ancient serpent sparker blocking me from progressing with the melee build? I'm sure i could do 52-53 with a good rift with FnR.
Cleared 56 solo in 13mins with this, works quite well. No zombies or unburied..
but don't even try to stack the blades on the RG, it's doomed to fail
Ye seems to op,
still need an anc walker, got 6-8 regulars but no luck yet still farming though ofc.
Talking about d3 and being burnt out, I've been there.. I have to take 5 days break every 4 months or so, at least. But I started in summer 2013 so I guess I have something left of d3.
