Need to catch up on the lore covering the World of Sanctuary in time for Diablo III? Want to see some badass fanart (including from our own Umpa)? Let us join Force as he takes a look at Diablo's history (pre-D1), in part one of this three part lore series, covering the conflict between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells, and Sanctuary's role in between.
It was mentioned in the beginning that there has been a battle between angels and demons since the beginning of time yet we don't know why, so technically we don't know who is REALLY the good guys or even the right side, for all we know it is the demons and hell who has been wronged in some way.
There are no good guys, which could perhaps have been made clearer in the video. It's not a fight between good and evil but between order and chaos (roughly speaking).
Heaven seems slightly more aligned towards the good people of the world, but not enough so to warrant total cooperation.
Nor do we know what the winning side (if in deed there ever will be one) plans to do after the victory. Other than throw a party over the enemies corpses. Will they take over the opposing world? Enslavement? etc?
Victory by one side would seem to be a cosmological impossibility. The conflict seems inherent to the structure of the universe, and one side just cannot be defeated. It's not even clear whether there's an end to their ranks.
If there is to be winner however, I suspect it will be neither Heaven nor Hell, but either the nephalem or something related to the "others" briefly mentioned in the Sin War novels.
Also I remember that Lilith was fought in D2 (I think) but from the video, clearly she seems like a good character, she even seems more beneficial to humanity than her lover (forgot the angels name, Anerius?)
Lilith is not a friend of humanity. She wanted to make them into soldiers yes, but soldiers that served and worshipped her.
so why would humanity want to join either side? Neither sound like a good choice, the whole time your looking helping out the angels but are they really in our best interests? (Also relating to my first question).
Because when two great forces clash, it's generally a good idea not stand in the middle of them. Especially when said forces will actively try to destroy you if you're not on their side. Choosing a side means only having to worry about one side rather than both.

@Noxiouss
In the teachings of Trag'Oul there's meant to be a perfect balance between the angel and demon influences. He/she/it says that one side left alone would destroy itself if memory serves me right.
Generally since demons are the ones trying to influence humans the most, it's usually right to be on the angel's side. The most the humans ever get help of the angels is from Tyrael, and that's about it, but you'll notice from the Diablo games that there's a bit too much demon going around.....
The nephalem were the children of the mixing of Angels and humans. They were giants that plagued the earth and caused great destruction. In the book of Enoch there is a detailed description of them. Also the book hints at the nephalem being the primary reason for God flooding the earth.
LOL It was funny hearing about this now since they said that the world would be flooded 21 may!^^
They forgot mentioning waiting for the Nephalem's first. xD
(And no I don't believe that nonsense)
No, according to the text, this happened thousands of years ago. You know, the flood that is spoken about in just about every ancient religion?
Edit: I hope you do not hate on me for saying this. But to correctly pronounce the name Baal it is said in one of two ways.
Baal can be said... (Bail or Ba-all) Baal is from the Bible and this is how it is pronounced.

Thank you for posting this!
