The Diablo 3 Bestiary now features a new creature from the realm of Sanctuary: the terrifying
Dune Thresher.
As I was preparing to set pen to paper to begin recording my thoughts at the beginning of my epic undertaking to gather the world's knowledge together in one tome, the hand of providence tapped me on the shoulder. The news that a rogue burrower had killed a citizen just outside the city gave me the wonderful opportunity to see firsthand one of the more disturbing creatures we share this world with – the savage dune thresher.

Long ago driven away from settled locales to the deep desert wastes of the Borderlands, the dune thresher is rarely seen by city dwellers. Every so often, however, whether due to injury or old age, one of these unholy beasts ventures to the edge of civilization to feast on the frail human animal. When this happens, a professional like Franklin Burroughs, the famed guide and hunter, is called in to put an end to the threat.
Fortunately, Burroughs and I, both being men of travel and adventure, have naturally crossed paths before (frequent readers of my works will no doubt remember this grizzled, rough-hewn boulder of a man from my classic, Xiansai Chronicles). Thus, I contacted him so that I was able to take part in his quest to rid us of the burrowing nightmare. He acted reluctant at first, but I could tell he was happy to have me along.
New asian samurai class from "Xiansai"!
Lol that's the first thing I thought when I saw it.
Tremors and Diablo go good together... very good.
And i thought i noticed it late. They showed it weeks possibly a month or two ago in screenshots.
BTW you mean the mongrels, not? Thats the only thing he summons.[/QUOTE]
Actually, it was in the gameplay video too =D
Agreed.
Just like with the maggots from Diablo 2... they had the ability to burrow themselves and resurface after a few seconds. It was stupid as it didn't help the creature itself at all, it just dragged time... and no matter how strong you are and what skills you have, you just can't get it killed until it comes out and you 1-hit-kill it...
LOL @ Ghouls climbing walls.
Please don't tell me this is the first time you've noticed this.
I think you need to do like the rest of us and watch that gameplay demo a few hundred more times.
Haha... contradictory, much?
Or, are you speaking of the update, itself?
Bashiok did say that the update was going to be in-line with previous updates; meaning nothing earth-shattering, I presumed.
The maggots apparently healed while they were underground.
But yeah, I find it really annoying too. But I wouldn't mind it so much if they did a considerable amount of damage.
Edit: Also, these Dune Threshers seem to be in a similar situation to the Dark Summoners (Cultists) from the gameplay trailer. The narrator was saying how you have to take out the Dark Summer quickly or else they will summon bigger and stronger guys who are harder to kill. The little screeching demon thing here seems to be like the Dark Summoners, calling on bigger and stronger demons (Dune Threshers).
as for the new monster, im LOVING it. and as someone said, it goes very well with tremors. whats what i thought of when i read about "being safe on the rocks." I think one of my favorite things about these is the idea of a pack comming after you, burrowed. since you can see them partially while their burrowed, it would be rather scary haha.
i just hope they dont turn out like the maggots and desert birds, where you cant hit them while their in the air/underground. lets also hope they are like sandleapers from act2. extremely fast and dart around with an occasional attack
I think that is the case, given that they mention, then demonstrate, how the WD can turn the mongrols into weapons by destroying them once they've been "used up."
Looking at how Blizz is working on monsters mechanic I think you should be more worried about what skill you'll need to use to get it to unburrow.
I don't think these things are going to be timid, at least not until they've sustained enough damage to want to get away to heal.
Up until that point, I think we'll be fighting them off with sticks (and various other blunt, or traumatically-stabbity accoutrements) just as soon as they sense our presence.
Who's to say that there won't be a red version in the game? Maybe the Dune Thresher is just one of many incarnations of that particular base-monster.
