Secret Cow Level To Return in Diablo 3
No deep details were revealed, but from the little taste out of Jay Wilson's responses you can tell the Secret Cow Level is coming back but in a different way. He even criticizes the bad things about the cow level in Diablo II, and how they will be tinkering to improve it. It would be useful, but it won't replace core content by farming your levels there rather than through the game itself. There may be a few innovations and surprises to the new version of the Cow Level. Read the interview.
I just hope it doesn't spawn more cow rushing and looting, and crap like that.
By the way if you read the interview you'll notice they're not positive if the Cow Level will return.
We don’t really know at this point. I really like the idea of secret stuff that ‘Diablo II’ put forward, but it’s not the kind of thing we would decide this early. But if we have something, I can assure people will be happy with it.
Moo, moo moo moo. MOOO!! Mooo
add more MOOOS
I hope it will be a more hidden secret this time around though, maybe some sort of secret you can find in the game instead of looking at the list of the Horadric cube formulas on bnet
he speaks mostly of what were the problems he saw with the cow level from diablo2.
I don't agree completely with him, btw, I had no problem with the cow level as it was, but sure there's always room for improvement.
Anyways, I'm pretty sure we'll see the return of the cows at one point or another in the game.
I hate when people find something BIG out and then dont tell anyone else how to do it. *spams* HOW DO YOU MAKE IT HOW DO YOU MAKE IT HOW DO YOU MAKE IT! *gets squelched*
WRONG. i don't know if its my disappointment in HG:L that has turned me off to any ideas they touched (cow level) or if I'm just seeking newer secret content.
I feel like Blizzard would want to separate themselves as much as possible from the HG:L failure even if it means sacrificing a classic like the Cow Level. I guess to sum it up, the Cow Level is tainted in my eyes.
I would be more excited if there were more secret entry ways like there are in the catacombs/jail levels in act I. However those doors only ever lead to box rooms with chests/gold that didn't necessarily loot much. I think more things like that would be great.

So long as there's no Secret Cow level and for damned sure no Secret Murloc Level, I'll be a happy man (though that doesn't mean I don't want something secret in the game for some comedy relief) Maybe a Secret Zergling Level? ROFLMAO! Or better yet, a secret level completely populated by those exploding suicide guys from Act 5 or something stupid like that.
But please, no re-hashed old ideas....be original Blizzard...
There was no Cow Level in Hellgate London because Blizzard owned rights to that as funny as it sounds, and FSS probably knew at the time Diablo 3 would have something like a Cow Level most likely, so I don't see why they would have had the rights to put a Cow Level in Hellgate in the first place as much as Roper probably wanted there to be.
Anyway nothing will remain secret in a game this anticipated. It'll be discovered in probably a week or two and then be all over the internet in a few days after.
I remember in Baldur's Gate 2 there was a a house you could only enter with a special stone. Inside was a insanely hard party u had to kill. Killing the guys within and the items they left was very rewarding.

Yeah, who doesn't like fighting cows running around with halberds?
I disliked the secret cow level from a design standpoint though. It actually angered me that it existed at one point, maybe it kind of still does.
I'm not a designer, at all, but in my opinion and from a design standpoint I think the secret cow level was a failure. For a long time it was one of the most lucrative ways to level, and one of the best places to MF. For an easter egg, something fun and whimsical, to overshadow the entire rest of the game was a huge problem, and one that existed for far too long. It was a fun idea, a cool nod to the rumors that spawned it, but in execution it was just... game breaking in some ways.
Well of course, everyone wants everything made easier for them, and that's effectively what it was. This barrel of fish that not only acted as cheesy way to pull the slot machine lever, but almost rendered the rest of the game unnecessary.
The oversight, I believe, existed in the requirement for the current difficulty to be beaten as well as the Cow King kill. It's easy enough to avoid the King or just have the level opened by other characters, and I can only guess that the amount of replay potential of the actual game was extremely undervalued.
Because you're playing a game, and it should be respected that you're playing that game. The cow level was not part of the game, it was an easter egg that made leveling and item finding far easier than the actual game. I'm inclined to almost call it cheating.
I'd have to agree with him here. on all points.
