The main reason for the corpses not being able to stay permanently is the potential number of them on screen at one time, and specifically that each corpse is affected by physics, allowing them to be blasted and thrown all over the place by the force of player abilities.
It's one of the trade offs when integrating new technology, you can get really awesome effects, but they do have a cost. In a 2D world, a sprite of a dead creature doesn't really cost any more (system requirement-wise) than a sprite of something that's alive. Probably less. In a 3D world where a creature dies and then needs to have physics calculations thrown onto it so it can bounce and fall and fly around, they cost substantially more.
We remember fondly those situations where you've just completely obliterated a camp of Fallen, and as you're picking up items - marvel in your destruction. That's a feeling and part of the gameplay where if we can realistically keep some of it without sacrificing features or having insane system requirements we'd definitely like to, but no promises.
When questioned as to how skills like Find Item, Corpse Explosion and Summon Skeleton would work in D3, if they were indeed included, he responded:
We haven't announced any abilities outside of those listed on the website, so by discussing what is or isn't in the game I would be essentially making an announcement, which I'm not prepared to do.
Thanks for the tip, Dead9k!
Having the corpses stay is a key feature to Diablo, its a hack and slash gore fest vs demons of every kid there bodies are just gonna magically vanish.
Where do you need 7 classes? THe 2 extras in LOD was damn useless and sucky classes anyways. Just have 5 really unique ones that are all fun to play.
About the corpses, I don't really care about their physics after they are dead. Maybe after 5-10 corpses the physics calculations could stop running on them and after you move away from the area the corpses could dissappear.
Anyways I'm not too bothered about them disappearing.
And i dont doubt the game play will be awesome, but it still needs to be darkened abit specially in the dungeons, and the gore needs to stay not vanish.
I'd rather have 4-5 good classes than 7 so so classes. Obviously the less classes, the more thought will be put into them.
In d2 I always had 1 pala 1 ama 1 necro then a lot of barbs and couple of sorcs (if we only count 1 mode hc or sc) So having 9 classes in my perspective would lead to situation where I would probably only play 5 of them. Maybe test a few more later.
But anyways this is going off topic. Lets stick to the corpses!
As is i reckon my comp is more than capable of playing this game, but i'm going to upgrade a bit never the less, i would love if the corpses remain.
Now really why is this such a issue, ok add the option, does it really add that much to gameplay or atmosphere?
This is going to take away a large chunk of fun from the game for me if it stays like that.
Altho we don't know much about the game in the later levels, will there be massive fights etc.
saves them the trouble to explain how a skeleton was summoned without a corpse around.
how crappy would it look to leap/smash them (after their death) and remain as if they arent there?
I dont mind how it is and their explanation is pretty good to me. Grass isnt the same, you cant throw it off cliffs and it cant move around as corpses can.
cry more because apparently you cant do anything else.
It would look less crappy than having them fade after a few seconds, thats for sure! Knocking ragdols around was "exciting" many years ago now, why should immersion and theme be kicked out so a barbarians hammer can always magically toss the bodies around. =/
As for too much movement of dead foes... I don't mind having a whole bunch of dead ghouls bouncing (as long as I make them bounce). Even if they move too much... it's always possible to reduce the effect of physics on dead enemies so they won't move too much (I personally won't care if they even lay still and won't move at all). Seriously... it will still be better than vanishing corpses... I know blizzard are trying to make the 3rd game less realistic than the past once and add style to it... but disappearing corpses? They took it WAYYY too far...
