Diablo3.com becomes Diablofans.com! Blizzard acquires diablo3.com.
Well, there's no point in beating around the bush any longer, so let's get right down to it. A few months ago we were contacted by Blizzard in regards to the Diablo3.com domain name. While they appreciate all the work that's been put into running this big Diablo fan community over the years, they still want the domain name. Hmm, I wonder why? Now before you get all up in arms about it, allow me to explain a few things.
First off, this fan site isn't going anywhere, it's just getting a new name: Diablofans.com! Blizzard is actually being really cool about it, giving us all the time we need to make it a smooth transition before we hand the old domain over to them. So be sure to update all of your bookmarks and point 'em to diablofans.com instead. Your user accounts will all still be perfectly functional and, along with this new site name, we'll soon have a big site redesign up and running as well. A new name, a new look. Huzzah!
Secondly, while Blizzard is indeed acquiring the diablo3.com domain name, they told me that this shouldn't be considered an announcement for the Diablo 3 game we've been waiting for all these years. They acquire new domains all the time. While this is true, I personally can't help but think that this is a confirmation of sorts that they're working on the next Diablo game. Sure, they can claim it's because they want to protect their intellectual properties 'n what have you, but I can't imagine they would all of a sudden be so interested in the diablo3.com domain if they weren't working on a new Diablo 3 game behind the scenes.
On a final note, I want to thank all of you guys who've made this community so strong over the years. It's only going to get better around here and I hope you'll all stick with us. One of the nice things about this whole name-change ordeal is that Blizzard really appreciates the fact that we're a dedicated fan site and we'll be working with them much more closely in the future to bring you the latest Diablo game news.
It's funny, I've had so many offers over the years from people who wanted to pay a lot o' cash for the diablo3.com domain name and I wasn't even willing to consider then. I set out to have a great Diablo fan site because I simply loved the Diablo series. Fortunately, with the help of some great people on the staff and fans like you, we accomplished just that. But when Blizzard came around asking for the domain, I was excited about it both as a Diablo fan and for their recognition of all the work we've put into the site. Fortunately for us, the diablofans.com domain name was available and it fit perfectly in line with the intentions of this site, so I registered it and here we are. Diablo3.com will still be active for a few more months so everybody can have a chance to get used to the new Diablofans.com domain. After that, it will simply point to the Blizzard.com homepage... at least until they're ready to use it for something more worthwhile. One of the nice things about the new diablofans.com domain is that it's all-encompassing. Instead of the site just being for people waiting on Diablo 3, it can serve as the main hub for *all* current and future Diablo games. Isn't it nice to know you'll always have a place online you can call home? Hey, even Diablo's demon minions need a place to hang their hats too.
Alright, that's all the news for now. I'm sure all of this news is gonna get the Diablo 3 rumor mill running like a mad banshee... so have fun discussing the announcement with your fellow Diablo fans!
update: Some gaming news sites are reporting that Blizzard "purchased" the diablo3.com domain from me. This is not the case. As I stated in the above post, if it was my intention to make a profit off of the domain, I could've sold it years ago, but I didn't. When Blizzard spoke to me about their interest in the domain, I was happy to give it to them since they had no problems with us moving the site to diablofans.com and will now be working more closely with us in the future. So yeah, I just wanted to clear that up... there is no monetary exchange taking place, I'm simply giving Blizzard the diablo3 domain.

Kepp it up diablo fans!
No... Blizzard bought diablo3.com and *merged* it into their network. I'm beginning to question your I.Q..
the merge he was talking about was a merger of the fan sites (which did not happen). Also IMO this is pretty big news, maybe not to you but to me it is.
Both top secret, but one is a MMO?
What if one was Diablo 3, and another was Diablo MMO or some sort...
BOTH AT WWI?!?!?!
P.S Thank you everyone for making me feel at home!!!
I'll give you a hint: Not because it was awesome.
Just a question: Why the hell are you even here? Youre negative about a possible D3 yet you're posting on its fansite. And you're calling Diablo a dead franchise when they have books coming out left and right AND patches are still being created for its sequel that was created years ago...
Tell me this... HOW would killing the D3 franchise benefit Blizzard? How would passing up that much dough make them a better company... and why would they go through the trouble of sarcastically / humourously avoiding the Diablo 3 topic when they could say: "nahh we're done with it"?
Lets explore YOUR logic
I know right? Then jumped on the celebration bandwagon when it actually happened.
All I'm saying is... Blizzard wants money... THAT is their primary goal (alongside creating amazing games... which ties into making money). In order to do that, they must satisfy their fanbase. It is MUCH easier to make money from your fanbase, than move on and create a brand new game and create a completely new fanbase... so LOGICALLY and OBVIOUSLY, blizzard would not be dumb enough to rid themselves of the fanbase that basically set their reputation for their Hack n Slash genre. An amazing chunk of their fanbase was brought to them through Diablo. Theyre gonna monitor the HELL outta these forums... watching everything we say that we would and wouldnt like about D3, and adjust accordingly. Theyre going to probably send a couple blizz workers in as "fans" and get the inside scoop on what the fans want and need... if thats not obvious... idk..
Think of blizzard as a celebrity. Many people create fansites with a celebrities name in the url posting pics, and sometimes untrue blogs. Some fansites even have moderators pretending to be the celebrity, again, posting false statements. Celebrities have the right to sites like those because their name is copywritten... but do they take it down? Uhhh no... because that'd be a waste of time... a waste of their damn time... and ummm.. ITS FREE PUBLICITY?!?!? The only domain they would take is the one they would use to create THEIR professional fansite. I hope that analogy makes sense.. lol.. i can ramble from time to time:rolleyes:
Hmmm, june? Why june? June 29th? This is the start of a tormented rumor-mill.
After 10yrs and only now they want the domain!? HA HA HA
Btw: all you ppl shouting: “Overhype!”: shut up! MD never lied and actually pointed us straight to the
Truth.
Oh and my theory on WoW? So sorry, I owe all u guys a beer. So that’s 24000 beers. K.
P.S I sleep better now, knowing that somewhere right nowa blizzard employee is workin on diablo3!
This is good news. Blizzard are such masters at 'unofficial' hype where everyone knows that something is in development, but there's a small chance it isn't cause there's no 'official' announcement. It drives people crazy, especially the instant gratification generation. Does anyone remember Blizzard unofficially hyping something (like obtaining starcraft2.com) and not having something on the go? Starcraft fans were freaking out over that move. I think the long term fans understand how all these pieces are coming together and how this is a sign of something.
There are so many hints out now that WWI is just the perfect place to really announce it:
- blizzard job postings for the 'Diablo' team
- the team 3 working on unannounced project
- Knaak not writing for a dead series
- diablo 3 was already in development years ago
- the diablo release anniversaries
- blizzard buying all the diablo3 domains
This gives great hopes for WWI which will be the real excitement. Magic 8 ball says 'all signs point to yes'. But, if there is no announcement then, I think I'll have to take a break for a while!
I still use speedvision for my skin. Your letters are very blendy.
Blizzard has been working on diablo3 for awhile no doubt. If you can NOW only sleep better. You lack quite a bit of common sense. It was overhyped, it's a honest opinion with honest reasoning. We aren't saying MD lied, he cleverly held us in suspense.
