i think an interesting affix would have been one that did something like:

absorb desecrator pools increasing your damage x% stacking 5 times.

"release the hatred boiling inside you"

taking something that is usually avoided and empowering you character with it seems a lot more game changing that shooting skulls...this was something i wish they discussed a little more.

posted a message on Creating Your Own Game Modes
The Modern Gamer: Both Player and Developer
I'd like to start by saying the best games are the ones that are simple to play but difficult to master, we all know this. anyone who has ever played super smash brothers for nintendo 64 and actually became great at it knows this. damages were set and the moves themselves were limited. The game wasn't about loot or story or endgame it was about the players cunning and skill, it was an extension of ones self. a battle of wits between you and your friends. What kept us playing was ever evolving challenge.

Diablo is in a unique position. the game was a failure in many respects. it came to us as a half baked product with all the foundations of a great game. Much of the loyal player base recognizes this and has been trying to help it become fully realized much to its dismay. I've been reading the forums since the game came out and I've seen things come from players that put the developers to shame.

First of Video Games are the manifestation of the developers own imagination and consciousness which we play out and explore. Video games are an Art. Much like a sculptor, a painting, a poem, and good novel. Its a fully realized expression of freedom.

    Diablo is not fully realized.

I believe with this particular game that the developers should be in charge everything they are now. the classes, damage percentage, loot drop percentage, campaign, adventure mode and how you acquire gear.(althought i believe the game should have set damages and the gear should be aesthetic based on accomplishments not luck. That is not important. because all of that has an end point. you can only level so high. you can only output so much damage.you can only collect so much flashy gear. These things only keep you playing for so long.

The only reason to keep playing a game is to test your wit and skill, this has been apparent since chess was invented. Its about the challenge. Sadly blizzard forgot this when they made a game centered on collecting pixel art. its not the items that is important. its the multiplayer experience that is important in this day and age. This has been apparent since battlenet. came about. people want to play together and against each other. But now its time to take the training wheels off. this multiplayer experience needs in the hands those playing. a sort of sandbox.

Give the player the tools to create. their own dungeons and game modes, to collect their orbs or mystery, the sword of destiny, PvP scenarios, anything they can come up with. All in the name of the challenge, their friends and themselves. imagine spending hours creating a dungeon for your friends to explore, experience and overcome, vice versa. In this mode your not obtaining gear and stat points but your challenging yourself and others. When you played super smash bros on N64 you didn't play against the level 9 computers and feel like you accomplished something.no. even if it was 3v1. still no. you played against friends. They were the greatest challenge and you played for hours and hours on the same map. The problem with this games today is that AI mechanics are all predictable, they have no reaction or imagination. Once you learn the rules of the AI the fun is gone. But a player has no rules. By giving the player the ability to set up the map with any combination of monsters. Control over their affixes health and damage output. Give the player the ability to control the environment and goal. by doing this you have created an entirely new dynamic to a game that is extremely static at the moment. and yes yes i know nephalem rifts, but what is more satisfying.. beating a pack of demons created and place by a machine based on random probabilities. or beating a pack of demons that you know your friend placed and organized for a reason.

By giving the player to tools to create his own dungeon or his own game mode PvP or PvE or PvPvE you have an infinite end game content controlled by the player. Its game that could never die because the players will have tools to express their own imagination and ideas that might be lost developers own imagination and ideas. Games are failing because players are realizing that game are not the escape they thought it was. We live our life by rules, don't touch that, don't sit on this, video games are suppose to be a fantasy world where they can be free of everyday rules. A place to be creative. A place to imagine. Let us use our imagination. Let us be creative as both players and developers. Just give us the tools to create.
