These are iconic to the series, and you're just getting rid of them for no good reason.
Let me try to anticipate the answer: "Players might get confused".
The main reason is that the tiered Normal > Nightmare > Hell > Inferno system is gone completely; the new system works quite differently and we didn't want the names, which have a history and thus an expected way of working, to make players think the system functions one way (when it in fact functions in a whole 'nother way).
Totally fair feedback, though. Happy to pass it on.
To any blues who may read this, PLEASE reconsider. There is no need to get rid of the classic difficulty names. We're not stupid, we understand the format is changing. -

Exactly what i was going to say, i really hope its a SPECIAL place, not just cuz its random with monsters and the layout, we have that in whimsyshire, its cool to go once or twice, but after that, rarely you want to go back to, since it isnt that worthy.
I hope Neph Rifts are special for any reason, being good exp, gold, drops, all of them, doesnt matter, even if you have to complete 25 bounties to get a Key...Make it special...Or it'll fall flat after a week.
Will agree with this. To me, the Nephalem Rifts should be the macro version of a treasure goblin. In other words, something that is good enough, and rare enough, that you will want to break your normal farming/bounty run to go knock it out. The way it felt at Blizzcon (rifts were always unlocked for testing), was you basically chose between either bounty or nephalem rift runs.
It sounds like the current plan is you have to do 5 bounties before you can do a rift. Seems like a nice balance to me. -

There's currently space for 2, maybe 3 more stash tabs in the interface. Maybe that's what he means?

The names are "breaking with tradition" because the actually difficulty levels are as well. Hard or Expert is not going to be +30 ML like Nightmare was, nor will it require you to beat the previous mode. So the name change is likely there to reset expectations after D2/D3.
And that may very well be their intention. If it is, I understand their reasoning, I just don't agree.
Working with the understanding that this is largely an aesthetic issue and has no major impact on the game one way or the other, in my opinion they lose more by changing the names than they gain. It's purely my opinion and I understand if people think I'm being a whiny bitch. I just don't see the point of changing something that is a well established tradition purely for the sake of changing it.
There's really nothing else I can say about this issue. Que sera sera. -

It's not about progress it's about builds. Weird gimmicky builds that are are possible w/ very specific items and very specific affixes on said items (the Sacrifice builds). The only way to ever try out these builds is if you somehow find these items, and that seems "remote." If it's NOT remote, then you've run out of stuff to do already, b/c they refuse to make any kind of endgame that doesn't involve looking for more items.
As opposed to what?
Personally, they should have kept the AH, but introduced Bind on Equip, or Bind on Sale. You can either wear it or sell it, but not both. You can buy it, but then you can't resell it. Something like that. They needed an item sink, no question, but this seems extreme. This is like the console version, where you find what you want immediately and now have nothing to do. I guess the biggest elephant in the room is the lack of a non-item oriented end-game. There is no PvP and no raid system. There is nothing to actually do w/ the gear you find. Gear needs to be a means to an end, instead of the end in and of itself.
Uh...welcome to Diablo? -

All legendary and set items being soul-bound is a terrible idea. Don't kill trading. Killing the auction house is good, killing the social aspect of trading is bad.
Going to have to disagree here. One of the worst things about D2 was trade spam, scams, and sitting around in lobbies yelling "10 SOJs for Tal's Helm" for hours.
Trading in Diablo is one of those things that sounds like a good idea on paper but doesn't really work in practice.
The devs have it spot on in my opinion. I don't want to spend time in some sort of trade chat spamming for the item I need. I want to go out there, kill demons, and find it. And then enchant it to make it perfect. And then use it to go out and kill more demons.
Due to RNG, do you even know if you'll ever see it? In D3, I've found multiple Andariel Helms, Manticores, Zuni's ring and boots, Tal Rasha helms, Nat's boots and weapon, Inna's weapon, and every piece of Immortal King. I have NEVER found, on my own, either Chantodo piece, Uhkapian Serpent, Skorn, Tal Rasha chest, orb, or amulet, Zuni's mojo, Echoing Fury, or Mempo, let alone the "good" versions of all of the above.
No, you haven't. Most people haven't, because the droprates for legendaries sucks right now. That's all changing with 2.0.
But the real point is that the item hunt, in general, will take longer now because you can't just go buy the BiS stuff after you get enough money. Good rares will become more beneficial and more valuable for those who want to trade. Finding those really good legendaries will be one of the end-game goals, and will actually be feasible with the new droprates. But you won't NEED them just to make progress like you do now. -

I had a hunch they would change how the difficulties work because a new act would break the current level flow. Not only that, but how powerful would Act 1 Nightmare monsters be, if you can go there after Act 4 Normal (no-expansion) and Act 5 Normal (expansion) and the two guys can play together.
If they want to keep the "Farm at any place, it's all the same difficulty" of the current Inferno, there's certainly two difficulties that distribute makes the whole game the same level. One makes everything lv63 (current Inferno), another makes everything lv70/73 (expansion's Inferno).
The current difficulties level ranges range are 1-30, 30-50 and 50-60. The normal one shouldn't be changing, other than the end-point due to act 5, but for compatibility with no-expansion people, let's ignore it. There's a need of at least one more difficulty to fill the 30-60 gap, possibly 2. And I'm not touching on the 60-70 gap. Just level on inferno? No idea.
There's also the console version to consider. We have Easy, Normal and Hard there.
They could have just changed the level curve per difficulty to 1-35, 35-55, 55-70. For people already at level cap, they would need to use act 5 Hell to catch up before moving back to level 70 inferno. A lot less work than redoing the entire level up experience.
Not that it matters now, but its not nearly as big a deal as you make it out to be.
If you're breaking the "Normal then Nightmare then Hell" tradition, you may as well break the naming tradition.
Two wrongs dont make a right. -
Nov 9, 2013miles_dryden posted a message on Diablo III: Gameplay Systems + CrusaderAnd as for the complaints about no Ladder/PVP, same deal. Just because it's in the test servers doesn't mean they are planning to go ahead with it. And even if they are, they are under no obligation to announce it yet.Posted in: News
This has been a pretty good presentation, imo. Sure, I already knew a lot of this stuff, but that's because I hang out on fansites and intentionally spoil myself on upcoming features. It's still cool to have it confirmed, and see it visually. -
Nov 9, 2013miles_dryden posted a message on Diablo III: Gameplay Systems + CrusaderI've said this in other threads, but I'll say it again here: a lot of this stuff is brand new, assuming you haven't been looking ahead at stuff in the datamining. The 5 Archangels are born out of the crystal arch and each embody the 5 virtues/aspects of Anu.
Each Aspect is tied to them like a soul... and it cannot just be traded..or declared that your are one of the others.. Tyrael can call himself the 'Archangel of Wisdom' but not the 'Aspect of Wisdom' as he is the 'Aspect of Justice'.
Maltheal may declare himself the 'Archangel of Death' but he is still the 'Aspect of Wisdom'.
I don't feel I 'botched' the wording at all..
Sorry, I wasn't clear. I meant the blizzard response was botched, not your comment. Your comment is valid in that they haven't fully explained yet how Tyrael and/or Maltheal were able to apparently change their aspects.
My guess is that they aren't changing their personal fates, but rather changing their approach to fulfilling that fate. Malthael just wants to end the war. From his perspective, killing all human accomplishes that. Tyrael wants to establish peace, both in the High Heavens and in Sanctuary. After everything the Nephalem has accomplished, he views Wisdom as more important than Justice, so he switches his focus.
Again, that's just a guess. Would have been a good question for the panel, but apparently the people who paid to go to Blizzcon and waited in line didn't bother to do their homework...
Quote from trocadero_fuerte
Except that's what they're doing. Tyrael drinks into the Chalice of Wisdom. Mortals shouldn't be able to do that, and it sounds like other angels have never done it, save Malthiel. Lots of angels hang out and drink in the Pools of Wisdom, but none of them use the Chalice. Tyrael using the Chalice, as a mortal no less, means the angels (at least the Angris Council) can and do change their "alignment" if they so choose. One of the core themes of this expansion is choice, specifically how angels and demons CANNOT CHOOSE their own fates. So, for all the time before mortality, the angels could have changed their Aspect/Rank, but then they lack the ability to choose to do so. It's not all that clear if choice is a human/Nephalem trait, or simply a mortal trait (Tyrael is mortal, but not human). This also doesn't explain Malthiel all that well; Blizz says he has choice, but how did he gain that ability? Did he steal it w/ all of the dead souls he's collected? And it still doesn't explain Inarius and Lilith, like, at all.
Inarius is the exception that proves the rule. He sided with demons out of a desire to end the conflict, by bringing peace. Not only did that backfire in a big way, the council basically abandoned him. -

Difficulties are revamped: Now are Easy, Normal, Hard, Torment, Demonic, Apocalypse
Sigh...such pointless name changing. What was wrong with Nightmare and Hell?
These are the new names for the MP level replacements, not the difficulty modes. I'm actually under the impression there is no longer any actual difficulty modes like before. And it's all just one mode with multiple MP levels (these new names) that unlock with level.
Even so, they could have kept it as, for example: Normal, Nightmare, Hell, Inferno, Torment, Apocalypse. (Not a fan of "demonic", that's too generic in a game that's all about demons to begin with.)
My point is they are changing something that didn't need to be changed. Change the format if you must, but why change the names?
Diablo should not have an "Easy" mode. That's just....wrong.
Have you ever heard the expression "to call a spade a spade"? Because easy mode is just what MP0 is.
Have you ever heard the expression "don't sweat the small stuff"? Yeah, I always had trouble with that one. It's the small things that bug me the most. It's fine if you don't agree. -

wait I'm totally confused now. I thought that Normal/Nightmare/Hell/Inferno were gone, replaced by the new 5 ones. and you would no longer need to complete one difficulty to unlock the next (forcing you to play the entire game 3 times just to get to Inferno).
There seems to be a lot of disagreement both between the people here and between what Blizzard is saying. Hopefully this will cleared up at the panel today.
Look, if you think I'm being an asshat about the names, that's fine, I've already admitted it's a minor issue. The things that seem like small, obvious changes that get mishandled get under my skin a lot worse than stuff like economy and class balance. It's just a personality quirk of mine, not just in video games. -

They specified several times that in Adventure mode you can go to any waypoint in any act. -

So if Tyreal is still the Aspect of Justice, then i guess Maltheal is still the Aspect of Wisdom.
Good, coz it seemed to break the lore a little when in the cinematic is seemed that Tyrael would just 'decide' he is now the aspect of Wisdom..
If he is just deciding to be the 'archangel of Wisdom' thats fine.. because he isn't smart enough to be the 'Aspect of Wisdom'
I think the wording there was kind of botched. I THINK what he meant to say was that Tyrael WAS still the aspect of justice after becoming mortal. When he "officially" rejoins the council, he becomes Wisdom instead, presumably dropping the mantle of justice in the process. "Since justice has been served".
How and why he can do that, and how exactly that works, and how it effects Malthael, are things they haven't discussed in detail yet. Probably will be discussed in the upcoming book.
EDIT:
Quote from trocadero_fuerte
No, Imperius flat out tells him "you're not fit to be the Aspect of Wisdom." Eventually, Tyrael gets the courage to go and look into the Chalice of Wisdom, where he finally realize that the Black Soulstone has to leave the Heavens, and that only humans can guard it. (Book of Tyrael).
Ah, thanks trocadero. I really need to read Book of Tyrael... - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.

Ok guys, it's Maka's time of the month, give him some space.
But seriously, to anyone interested in discussing it, what would an assassin do to make him unique in D3? The DH and monk took a lot of the features of the D2 class, so how could they implement it in a way that didn't step on their feet, so to speak?

Honestly, I think allowing DHs to have a dagger/sword focused build would be a better option than a whole class built around that. But that's just me.
