PvP is insanely tough to balance with PvE. Just look at WoW, they change it every month or so. People also have much higher standards nowadays than they did - I can't remember ever doing PvP in D2 and surviving more than one or two hits, but I know people still did it and had fun in that environment.

All I'm trying to say though, is that it's not as easy as "remove crit" or "reduce player damage by 90%."

At least I'm not saying that it would be so easy, but it could be a nice start. Now the whole system doesn't work (at least without player made rules) and everyone (or at least close to everyone) wants change in the system

Yeah, I've been thinking about the same thing and I've tried to come up with some numbers that could work. It's just hard to guess what numbers would work as there's no possibility to test it...

Diablo 2 has numbers around 1/4 and 1/6.
Okay, I haven't played D2 that much. I used to play D1 a lot, but somehow D2 just didn't feel good for me. But those numbers could work also in D3. It would be really nice to see working PVP, even though I guess I still would play it that much.

I don't see why exactly crit should be the stat to be excluded from PvP. Why not CHD, for example? Also the paragon system is there to have an advantage. PvP is broken, but they shouldn't fix it by excluding a single stat. The damage should just scale down a lot when attacking players.
...More proper way to implement IMHO also would be to scale down damage in PVP. For example if you'd do let's say 30% of damage to other players, that would mean that there wouldn't be one shots...

So basically just what I said in my post, too?

I think also that just removing one or two stats would fix the issue with PVP. Of course if CHC and CHD would be removed from calculations, that would make things little more even, but it would make some or most of the gear choices obsolete and people would just find different gear for PVP that would make them steamroll over weaker characters. More proper way to implement IMHO also would be to scale down damage in PVP. For example if you'd do let's say 30% of damage to other players, that would mean that there wouldn't be one shots (at least there shouldn't be) and it would give possibility for those who don't invest so much time in the game to still be competitive against those who play for hours a day.

PvP is about having advantage over people who put less work in the game.
But little scaling to even things out would give the less playing people interest to play PVP (or Brawling) more, as of now I can't Brawl with pretty much anyone in my friends list as my main is just one shotting them. If the damage would scale they would have a chance to fight back. Nowadays I don't even try to Brawl with them since there's no point in fighting...

posted a message on Penalties, death... where is it?
I'd like to get some challenge too on my hands. I'm no MP10 cookie cutter, I run MP6 with my main, but still the death penalty is so non existent that it get's on my nerves. I've tried MP10 (ofc) and I had some problems and deaths with my toon there, but it didn't worry me (!) since there was no penalty for dieing...
XP loss might be too radical to introduce for the spoiled community at this point, but something harder and more challenging than couple of thousand gold for repairs and spawning at the exact same location would be nice. I remember when pre-nerfs I had problems even on getting to LVL60 and Inferno with my Wiz and had to tune down difficulty to farm money so that I could afford repairs and try again in Hell. That's the stuff that I want. Back then it meant something when you died; It cost gold (a lot!), you had longer respawn times everytime and elites would heal back to full. That combined with the insanity of pre-nerf difficulties made playing challenging and therefor FUN!

posted a message on Diablo III: I remember when...
I remember that before Inferno nerf I was stuck with my Wiz in LVL 51-52 and couldn't get it up. I refused to go back to NM difficulty and tried to grind my way through Hell. Then I leveled my Barb up and got all the way to Inferno and had some money to gear up my Wiz and get it up also.

I miss those Invulnerable minions as they were hard elites to kill and it made them more tactical. Especially when it was some monster that loved to run away from you and it's minions tanked you...

Act2 flyers were a nightmare as well as those Molotov throwers. Actually almost all monsters were more challenging back in the old days. I don't say that some of nerfs hadn't been in place, but I think that there has been way too much nerfing. The game was more interesting when you couldn't just run through every mob and area, but you had to improvise and plan some situations before entering combat with some monsters and areas. Hopefully in RoS we'll see once again some difficulty notches turned up.

posted a message on The common novice question.
From a quick look around your gear you seem to lack EHP. What I'd reckon is that you try to get your AR and Armor values up and get your VIT around 800-1000. You seem to have Arcane Resistance pretty nicely so I would recommend investing on that instead of pure AR stat since you use OWE. Armor would give you nicely EHP also so try to get that better in your gear. And weapons would need some upgrade also, especially main hand.

But this is just me saying from what I understand how Monks work, my main is Barbarian. But those are some general rules that should apply to all classes so hopefully you'll get some help from my advices.

Way better start to paraleveling DH than I had :) Only things that come into my mind are that you could use some more life and armor at least and I'd personally take a Manticore with two sockets and apply Emeralds in both sockets.

I do feel that you're right on that one. I just don't want to always follow everyone else (though my build and gear is looking like that more and more ATM) and I'm always trying to look for doable alternatives. Only problem is that the alternatives are almost non-existent in Diablo 3. I tried to build my barb at first without CHC and CHD which didn't work out. Only reason for that was to be different than others. Now I'll just try to think some other gear to use than the usual which is found on 90% barbs at least. Unfortunately it seems that it isn't worth it... :/

The patch highly encourages party play which makes MP10 alot less stressful and I don't see anything stopping you from playing there but it's alot less progressive for everything else than gaining good XP. So yes you CAN, but I don't advise doing it full time.

I've been looking also the patch notes and I've been really happy for the changes. But my point is to make my Barb able to do it alone (with Templar by my side of course) and that is why I'm in need of advise :P I won't be playing there full time, but it's just for the sake of being able to do it when I want (and it will help a lot in getting the Hellfire Ring)

Those changes to skills that you suggested seem to have a lot of potential on them, so I'm trying them out at some point soon. There seems to be a lot to test and change in both gear and skills still :) One thought has also been to try BT sets chest and boots to get decent EHP boost, what do you think of that?

That chart explained a lot actually. Looking at it makes me think that something like 6-7K armor and 500-600 AR should be more than enough. Natalya's boots and ring seem to be a worthy choice as it seems that both give solid boost to Barb also and the 7% CHC is massive bonus!

You're right Strafir on the fact that I don't try to make as fast and efficient farming that most people seem to want. I prefer nice solid farming whilst killing a lot trash (I know it's not so worthy, but the SFX and graphical response that I get from good Cleave hit that explodes half the screen away is my highlight always :D ) and killing the elites fast also (trying to get them down under 15 seconds). My "farming" route in 1.0.7 has been Skycrown, Stonefort (getting NV5 and possible key), Keepdepths 1 and 2, Rakkis (reverse), Arreat 1 and Tower of Damned 1 (the circle from stairs to WP), Arreat 2 and finally The Core of Arreat. Now with 1.0.8 out I'm trying to think what I want to grind in Acts 1,2 and 4 also :)

BTW, I have 5,8 LS ATM if I remember right. Is it enough? I have also some LoH, but I don't remember how much. As soon as I can get my Armor, Life and AR to sufficient levels (6-7K, 40-50K and 500-600) and DPS preferably to around 200K unbuffed I'd guess that I'd be able to do MP10. Or how much I have to have as the values in order to do MP10?

Thanks for all the replies! I've started to make upgrades and changes to my gear and build. ATM I'm trying to get CHC and CHD up and maybe some AS also included. One of the main things has been also on concentrating to get EHP up with VIT and AR and maybe the next update I'll be making is crafting new shoulders and bracers. I've started to drop the MF off and so far it hasn't seemed to affect much at all to my drops.

I had Ignore Pain which I changed to Warcry and it seems to be working since my resistances are way too low... As soon as I can get enough AR I'll be able to replace that skills (once again). For movement speed I've thought about getting Lacunis, but I guess ones with STR and AR are going to be expensive, thus delaying that for later.

And for MP's I'm aware that 3-5 are maybe the most effective, but I do want to be able to grind MP10, at least for the personal joy that I can say that I have "mastered" Diablo 3 in all it's difficulties :D Of course it will be easier also to get my hands on Hellfire Ring when being able to do that in MP10.

The fact that SoJ comes HotA reducing abilities was new to me. Haven't actually read much about SoJ ever. I guess it's pretty high priced at this moment, but maybe it'll be on the shopping list as soon as I can get some better grinding done.

Once more, thanks for the insightful comments and replies! And Twoflowers, I'm sorry again, didn't mean to steal focus from your thread :(

The one difference I noticed is that I have way more resists than you, and I even use the resist boosting shout for high MP's.

Thank you for your reply :)

I noticed that also when looking more on your stats and gear. I've been trying to find the best suiting combination of skills for my play style and it seems that though I like the Ignore Pain skill, I need to ditch that in favor of the Shout. I've been doing pretty much the same routine whilst killing mobs as you mentioned so on that I shouldn't be far from the right track.

But enough with the off topic. I'm not so sure about getting MP10 readiness with 50M since I don't know exact prices for gear on that level, but my guess would be also that it might not be doable... I think that you could always get better gear piece by piece, and for one decent upgrade 50M should be all good. It just means a lot of more grinding to get other pieces upgraded also. Unless of course you come along great deals, then it's a different story :)

For upgrading gear to other toons I think that it is possible to use some shared gear. Like on necklace you'd have AVD, INT, CHC, CHD and VIT it should go easily on both INT users you have etc. Set bonuses can be a bit different story at some points but set of three on Tal Rasha or Zunimassa will get you nice bonuses for both Wizard and Witch Doctor at least if you focus on black damage (at least for now, don't know if they're going to fix that bug on next itemization patch that should be coming later this year I guess).

For DEX toons I'd look for either two on Inna's set or three in Natalya's set (or why not both if possible) to switch between chars.

If you can get your hands on some other legendaries or rares that will boost greatly then there's no reason to dismiss them just for the sake of set bonuses. It's pretty much all about luck on what you will find when searching through AH. And if you want to save some gold whilst looking for items, I'd reckon looking as often as possible the closing auctions that may have passed somewhat unnoticed. Some times there are great deals to get hands on when you look for the last minute bids.
