Not to mention that D2 didn't have "specific item locations", it just had certain bosses that were exactly the right level to not have any excess items on their loot table after the item you wanted (e.g. Nightmare Andariel for SoJ).
Worse still, a lot of monsters don't drop everything, so people don't run them at all. When's the last time someone ran Cold Plains? At least with bounties, you will pass through many areas of the game.
It's been a while BUT
Starting with the side areas near the end of Act 1 the treasure class of monsters became high enough to drop most of the items you could want or would be able to trade and only 1 treasure class was limited to Baal, Diablo and Nilathak. So people certainly could have run through that area and on ladder there were plenty of different runs that people used to farm certain classes of drops, like runes.
The OP is certainly a nut-job as there was only the most limited of was to manipulate the possible drops that you got.
That said, I have taken far less time in D2 (I only play ladder and only after resets) to gear up the 3-5 characters that I would play in a ladder season than I have currently taken to try and get the things I want for my Demon Hunter.
The distance you can be from the location marker before it shows up for a bounty increases the longer you are in a zone. While you might have been right near it at the start you wouldn't have an arrow though checking the big map might have still shown you the pulsing circle.
Enrage timers are a failure of design and are only there to keep good players from playing skillfully by creating an arbitrary gear check. I was glad to see that this fight didn't seem to have one.
Grats to the OP, I wouldn't have the patience for that long of a fight!
I think the best bet would be adding a global cooldown on the cursed chest so you can only activate them say about every 15 minutes or so. The event is cool and is fun but if overdone it gets quite boring. This fix would make it still possible for those who just come along it in regular play and it limits the farming aspect of it.
Yeah because forcing people to play thier game only in the way that you want them to play it is totally the right answer.
Good luck. I figure I'll be farming at least a handful of them. Probably some +vit ones for the companion and at least one for each other class though I'm unlikely to level them heh.
Just takes a long ass time for me to get them. Should be timing my kills at mp4 and see if we've upgraded our dps enough to hit mp5 for bosses. Out last run had no wipes. It's just me and a barb though and you can't really rez each other with only 2 players.
