posted a message on The Graphic Novel: Unconventional Comics
I don't find a statement like "A graphic novel is essentially a long comic book." to be very accurate, but that's not to say it doesn't hold any water. I much prefer graphic novel to comics. Not that I don't enjoy comics. But graphic novels usually have much broader and much deeper plots and characters.

While it is true many graphic novels are published under the Vertigo company which is a subsidiary of DC Comics. DC comics is famous for characters such as Superman and Wonder Woman. But under the Vertigo portion is where you find the much grander literary works such as Watchmen, V For Vendetta, Hellblazer, Sandman, Preacher, 100 Bullets (and maybe 30 Days of Night, I think Vertigo did that one too). These titles may contain super heroes (as is the case with watchmen) but often they are not super heroes much in the same way as mainstream DC. Them being a super hero is secondary or even tertiary to the main story, which usually deals with much more philosophical or religious or political material.

Or sometimes they don't. Others such as those that are I guess considered gothic horror or gothic fantasy usually deal with someone or a group or people finding who the really are, in the case of Darrian Ashoka in the Dawn series he is coming to terms with the realisation he is the embodiment of Cernunnos, the horned god of Death, and the woman he loves and idolises is if fact the wife of Cernunnos. Or like most things present in the gothic genre as a whole it is full of vampires and other such monsters from fantasy.

Too a lesser extent you can, to a point, classify manga as graphic novel. As several manga share many of the same traits of graphic novels of western society. Probably one ofthe most notable manga in this regard is Ghost in the Shell, with its philosophical debates about the nature of the soul and whether or not it is possible that a robot can possess a soul, and similarily when robots learn to feel, who decides what is human? It also deals alot with the works of Isaac Asimov, clearly since the name of the manga is similar to asimov's work "Ghost in the machine". The burring between the line of human and robot appears in a lot of graphic novels and in comics, but it's in Ghost in the Shell that it is really questioned, where as in most comics very little thought is given to what the blurring of that line actually means.

Perhaps another point of differentiating between comic and graphic novel is the amount of "graphic" violence, language drug use and sexual content present. Graphic novels are rather "graphic". While present in comics, it is in much smaller doses compared to the graphic novel. Even if they are about the same thing. Frank Miller's Batman graphic novels (which he actually got complaints about and was asked to stop making them) is quite removed from the Batman in the majority of DC comics. Frank's Batman is much more brutal and forceful and not above the law, often seen breaking bones and killing the scum of the underworld, be they pimps, whores, drug dealers, drug addicts mobsters, as well as the usual minion of the bad guys (like Two Face and the Joker).

Graphic novels do tend to catch a bit of crap from being passed off as mere comics and being lumped in with the throngs of rather generic super hero stuff. Which is sad. I wouldn't call Godspeed: The Kurt Cobain story a comic like I would call Witchblade or Tomb Raider, and not just because its about Kurt Cobain of Nirvana fame, but that is part of it. I wouldn't call it a comic because of the nature of it and how deep it goes into it's subject matter, which isn't so much about the band Nirvana, but delves into Kurt's addictions to various drugs as well as his creative processes he used to his songs and to make his art (some of which he made from blood and semen). Hardly seems like a comic that. But it does help if you like Nirvana/Kurt if you read that one. But it is good. It won a few writer's awards

But that is up to your personal interpretation.

posted a message on Der Freischutz
Any one here read Der Freischutz? Or rather seen it being performed as it is an opera?

Just bought Hellsing Ultimate volume IV today, and the character Rip Van Winkle sings Das Wild in Fluren und Triften which is from Der Freischutz, which roughly translates to The Free Shooter or The Marksman.

It was the opening portion of the song that was used in the anime, but it just sounded so beautiful. Propbably because it was a chick singing in the anime as opposed to a man in the opera. But I have heard a male singing it and it still sounds good.

I must see this opera sometime, or at the least read it. Marksmen making deals with Zamiel (The Devil) fails to hold up his end then getting his soul dragged down to hell and his body thrown in a ravine and devoured by wolves. And no fat chicks.

But that being said Walkurenritt has a fat chick in it and I love that opera too. Die Walkure (The call of the Valkries( is a brillant song.

Opening lyrics to Das Wild in Fluren und Triften

    Mein Sohn, nur Mut!
    Wer Gott vertraut, baut gut!
etzt auf! In Bergen und Kluften (the u in Kluften is actually the U with the dots above it. Site doesnt like that symbol)
    Tobt morgen der freudige Krieg!

Das Wild in Fluren und Triften,
Der Aar in Wolken und Luften (the u in Luften is actually the U with the dots above it. Site doesnt like that symbol)
Ist unser, und unser der Sieg!
der Sieg! der Sieg! der Sieg!

    My son, have courage!
    Who trusts God, builds good
Let's go! In Mountains and abyss
    Tomorrow rages the joyful war!

The game in fields and valleys
The eagle in clouds and air
Is our, and our is the victory!
the victory! the victory! the victory!

Incredibles had super heroes going into hiding to avoid law suits from people who didn't want to get saved. Until some villian turns up and forces them out of retirement

Watchmen has a super heroes, retired ones, getting killed, but only a few people know that they were super heroes. Police ass it off as some thug getting whacked. No one really retires in Watchmen to avoid anything and one guy doesn't retire. He leaves a "Never" sign on a multiple rapist that he dumped outside a Police HQ (after breaking the rapists face in). And several superheores end up working for the government making bombs and doing other jobs.

Bought the graphic novel about a month ago. I love Alan Moore's work. He also did V for Vendetta (and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but that one was better as the book).

I really like watchmen, it should be interesting to see how it turns out as a movie, what gets left out what gets added, and will it retain the same feel as the book. V for Vendetta was quite different as a movie. In the movie it was clear V was a good guy, whereas in the novel he is an anti-hero. He is not the villain yet neither is he a man who does the right thing, he does a lot of bad things in the novel that got left out or changed in the movie.

I like the character of Rorschach in the novel version of Watchmen. so yeah it will be interesting to see what they have done with him in the movie. Which I think comes out here May 5th. Boo. That's too long.

We wouldn't need to do this if everyone had followed the rules we set out years ago, before I stepped in an officiated them.

We as a group all decided on Destromath. Even took a vote on it. Then people went all over the place. Except for me.

I'm not particuallr keen on changing now actually. Got a lot of good mates on Destromath.

But I will say this, if we say one realm or server for us to use on Diablo 3 people had better do it and stick with it, or voice your concerns before we decide on the realm/server.

    Quote from "Num3n" »
there is either a game move or song that i have heard that uses this:

-I act as God's own wrath upon the Earth, raining down the divine punishment of Heaven,
In nomine Patri, et Fili, in spiritu sancti, amen

    please link me up

Hellsing. The Irish catholic priest says it. Father Alexander Anderson the Paladin. The one that works for the Vatican's Section 13, The Iscariot Organisation.

Diablo: Hellfire also uses "In spiritu Sancti"

Almost any latin prayer will use In nomine patri, et fili in spiritu sancti. Its latin for In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost (or Spirit).

    10 Commandments
Moses: No son could have more love for you than I.
Sethi: Then why are you forcing me to destroy you? What evil has done this to you?
Moses: The evil that men should turn their brothers into beasts of burden, to be stripped of spirit, and hope, and strength - only because they are of another race, another creed. If there is a god, he did not mean this to be so.

The city that he builds shall bear my name, the woman that he loves shall bear my child. So let it be written, so let it be done.

Let the name of Moses be stricken from every book and tablet. Stricken from every pylon and obelisk of Egypt. Let the name of Moses be unheard and unspoken, erased from the memory of man, for all time.

posted a message on The History of Diablo Stats
My barb builds have changed a lot after LOD came because BO gives so much more HP now than it was then. People generally didn't put more than 10 points to BO because it suffered diminishing returns which resulted ofc a lot less HP. So back then I did everything to get as much vita as possible.

Actually quite a lot of people max out Battle Orders. I do. And I did pre LOD. It was the only warcry I would put any real amount of points into. But before synergies I would use Iron Skin and Natural Resistance, instead of maxing out Double Swing for the bonus damage to Frenzy.

I personally have no issue with the game assigning the stats for me, I generally make my characters the way the game will endeavour to do anyway. My "mage" caster types have less Vitality and Strength but more Energy that "Warriors" While Warriors have the absolute minimalistic amount of Energy.

If anyone has played WOW long enough to see what happens whe nyou level up thats pretty much my style.

    "Warrior"
    STR +3
    DEX +1
    VIT +2
    ENG +1

    "Mage"
    STR +1
    DEX +2
    VIT +1
    ENG +3

Or something to that effect. Essentially each class is given more stats in its primary attribute and less in the ones that really have no or little effect on it.

Diablo 1 may not have had auto stats, but id did have some sort of favouritism.

    Warrior
    Max Str 250
    Max Dex 60
    Max Vit 100
    Max Mag 50

    Rogue
    Max Str 55
    Max Dex 250
    Max Vit 80
    Max Mag 70

    Sorcerer
    Max Str 45
    Max Dex 85
    Max Vit 80
    Max Mag 250

Each one played to the classes strengths. The warrior had the most Str and Vit so he could pound away and take the brunt of the damage, the Rogue had the most Dex (also the requirement of bows), while the Sorcerer had the most magic so he could cast his spells without depleting his mana after his third spell.

Diablo II change this as each stat could go up to 9999999 (I think that was the limit, 7 numbers but if it got too big (like with a lot of 0's (which are a wide number) it just simplified it by denoting 1000 with the k symbol), thats including bonus from items/skills.

Personally I found that to be quite rediculous. I'm a role player, and while that has no true bearing on the Diablo it does present a certai nmentality, one usually backed by Auto assign stats. The Warriors get more life than wizards, wizards get more "intelligence", "wisdom" "Magic" or "Energy" than warriors. Which to me makes sense. But its nice to decide for yourself. If you want a mage with lots of life you should be able to do that. But it is really annoying though. I finally get passed your insane amount of mana due to your high Energy which I am forced to widdle away from you because of Mana shield and now I have to beat down your insane amount of life because you beefed up your vitality, that is not cool for some of us.

But then again Diablo (and Diablo 2) is an easy game to hack. I can just make myself do 15670k damage. That should take care of things for the most part.

My younger brother played in at a friend's house and would always tell me about it. The friend in question was like A family friend. The children in both families would routinely stay at each others houses, we sort of matched up quite nicely, we were the same ages, except for me and the guy who owned Diablo 1. he was older than I was. So I was not there as often as I would have hoped. (Yeah less Diablo for me, at least for a while)

As the tales my brother span about the game became more and more intriguing, both myself and my other brother began to play it more and more. The tales were had heard tell of were indeed true.

As time went on, we soon began sick of sharing the one disc. bearing in mind this was back in 96 and few people back then had Cd burning programs let alone knew how to use a computer. Soon we bought our own copy. After performing various chores for the parentals. Actually working to get money to buy something you want. How strange. No one does that?! Bought it, loved it. Secretly wish I still had my orginal box. Good old flip front box 4 times the size of the matchbox crap games come in today. Yeah who remembers when computer games came in giant boxes with huge manuals and maps and catelogues with previews for other games?

Who knew people played a game for it's story. Don't people just play games for PVP? This is news to me.

Cutscenes, CGI cinematic, or ingame ones are primarily very engrossing and draw you into the story more (that is assuming the game has one to begin with). Too many cut scenes though and its overpowering and a tad boring, not to mention you have to in essence load all the cutscenes whether you actually see a Laoding bar or not. BGII anyone? (All though I personally did enjoy every one of them).

You don't need one every 5 minutes, but from what it seems that is kinda what we are going to get, as it looks like ever time you talk to an NPC or at least the first time you talk to them, or rather the first time you talk to an important NPC you get one. A cinematic preceeding every act or chapter, and an epilogue. Prologue(before act 1) 1 before act 2 1 before act 3 1 before act 4 and the epilogue worked nicely in D2 (Classic). The two extra ones the Expansion brought in were fine too. But a few little cut scenes for bosses couldnt hurt.

I wish the butcher movie was still in the game. But the Lazarus one was great.

posted a message on Revised Rules & New Signature Limit
This whole section is a scapegoat for butt-hurt mods/admins to silence particular debates and keep them from being held. (art-design anyone?)
    Lame.

The art debate would and could still happen under the new rules. You just cannot post things like "new graphics = suxors. Screw you Blizzard. Anyone who likes the new art is gay and bums goats." And before you say anything, yes, someone actually said that. If someone wants to argue against something, say the new art direction they can, so long as they do it in a concise, logical, structured, informative meaningful and reasonable way. "Hate the game, not the player" Reducing people who think differently to you to "gay fags" is not needed.

And sadly that is what happened in a lot of threads where an arguement or debate was taking place. All that rule does is stop the flaming on the person. It doesn't stop you from voicing your oppinion on whether you like or dislike something.

posted a message on How am I supposed to beat King Leoric
Holy Bolt. It can be used much in the same way as Equinox suggests with the bow. Only it will do more damage.

In D1 Holy Bolt does what it is suppose to do, double damage against unholy creatures such as demons and the undead. Holy Bolt pwns Diablo. Sadly this spell got nerfed in D2. It's a shadow of its former righteous self.

Alternatively you can use a weapon with fast or very fast attack speed. Leoric uses a sodding great big sword. He attacks slow, but to make up for this speed deficit, he steals life (via the Undead Crown). If you can do more damage over a period of time that he can you will best him with ease.

I guess the other problem is he is not alone. But his minions are far weaker than he is. Just run around constantly whacking the fodder till you get him down to a one on one.

Well in Single Player anyways, in multiplayer he can summon guys too.

You find the answer there plus a lot of other info as well.

Diablo 1 is quite late in the timeline as you can see.

HOMM3 was awesome. Though upgrading every single unit twice/three times was a little annoying sometimes. HOMM2 was truly awesome. Sandro is my guy! That guy is simply bad ass.

Go titans and Black Dragons. Epic battle between these two. Best archer unit vs best flying unit in the game. Or you could always go with 999 Halflings, lol.

Never got around to 4 and 5. Heard 4 sucked. Might try it some time though. Same with 5.
