posted a message on D3 HUD - Allowed or not?
Stay the hell away from that crap:

    1. The techniques the hud program uses to do its somewhat legit business are exactly the techniques used by other programs to do stuff that's a lot less acceptable from Blizzard's point of view, and there's no real way for them to tell the difference between 'nearly ok' stuff like the hud program, and 'totally not ok' stuff. Officially sanctioning any particular 3rd-party app would just make all other program's authors try to disguise themselves as the legit stuff, creating a major headache for Blizzard and end-users.

    2. Once D3 gets a serious competitive scene (i.e. when ladders arrive), apps that offer a tangible advantage will be viewed as mandatory by too many people, creating a great deal of community tension between the 'play safe, play fair' side and the 'do anything to get an advantage' side, unless the latter side gets banned early, and banned often. Blizzard will not want to be seen as soft on ToS-violations once ladders ship.

    3. Personally, I wouldn't touch any 3rd-party app that wasn't open source, regardless of ToS violation. Grayware like that is a perfect vector for all manner of attacks.

In short, it is in Blizzard's interests to stomp on 3rd-party app usage, particularly once ladders have gone live, and it's courting disaster (in the form of account bans and/or breaches) to use them yourself.

posted a message on A suggestion that just might save ROS
Given that most people are perfectly happy with D3 and don't even own RoS, and that most people only play for a few hours a week, and that most people don't use a keyboard, I think Blizzard should multiply gambling legendary rates by 10.

Most people agree with this idea!

Bulk-farming shards in level 1 T6 rifts is clearly broken, but despite its underlying grooviness, the RiF thing is also one hell of a distortion.

IMO shards shouldn't drop in rifts lower than level 70. On top of that, I also think that RGs shouldn't drop bonus shards... but in T1+, elite kills should drop small amounts, scaling up with torment level. Gear should come primarily from playing the damn game, not bunny-hopping from piñata to piñata.

posted a message on The 'guaranteed to get legend in first hour" event buff.
Given that it's a community buff, it's most likely switched on at a particular date (e.g. D3's 2nd birthday, the start of Blizzcon, etc), and guarantees you a legendary within the first hour of getting the buff (i.e. the first time you logged in with a given character after the buff went live, not each time you log in)... basically an in-game way of gifting legendaries to players.

Once tiered rifts arrive, the reward for rifts will be tougher rifts with extra.... something. Maybe. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

posted a message on New Loot System - Capped RNG
It's not about broadening appeal... that's a fast-track to mediocrity. It's about mitigating the fact that certain players, simply because of RNG, won't see any good loot for days, a subset of which won't see anything for weeks, and so on. Through no fault of their own, their experience of the game isn't as positive as others.

Blizzard already has some mitigating factors... bounties give access to higher drop rates via rifts, targeted farming in the form of act-specific legendaries from caches, and slot-specific ones from Kadala. I wonder if the issue is just down to the gap between 'best' and 'good'.

    Quote from Bagstone

From now on we have a very short and concise blue response to that. It is: this is never gonna happen.

such is the nature of Diablo games—by playing the game you have a chance at acquiring the loot you are looking for, but it will never be possible to guarantee that you will get it.

    http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/10495112124#16

Sure, but given that, how do you make loot-farming in D3 a positive experience for everyone? Maybe that's a zen question. There is definitely a selection bias issue... people who are getting what they want by the time they expect it aren't really posting. But there's no doubt that even once you've removed the people who don't get how RNG works or how important efficiency is, or are just plain old angry internet haters, there's enough sane, rational people having a bad time to warrant some kind of action. Bear in mind that the 'shafted by the RNG' issue is going to feel even worse in ladder seasons, where there's a very finite time-span, and "it'll all even out over time" no longer applies.

Note: Increasing the drop-rate is clearly and absolutely not the right thing to do. So there's that.

posted a message on New Loot System - Capped RNG
I think part of the problem is that for any given class, there's actually only a small number of items which aren't basically trash. There are too many orange rares and underwhelming set bonuses in the legendary roster, which means that the odds of a legendary actually being one you want is smaller than it should be.

At the moment, there's a tension between having no guarantees about what you'll get next (which is good), and having no guarantees about what you'll get ever, which can be demoralizing when the game isn't capable of throwing surprises at you to make up for it (and that last bit is really the key to getting people to put up with low-odds gambling).

Perhaps Blizzard should either do another pass and beef up the 'B-list legendaries', or add a grindy way to re-roll either more than one stat, or the entire item, when the game drops the right legendary with completely the wrong stats. Maybe as simple as if you've got two crappy versions of the same legendary, you can use one to completely re-roll the other?

Ugh. Isn't this game about slaughtering monsters? So what if there's BiS gear you'll probably never see? If you're playing the game just to 'finish' your character, that's kinda missing the point. It's like having sex just so you can check off the Kama Sutra, and then getting pissy because your girlfriend refuses to do the one on page 34.

Meanwhile, a nano-soul's width away on an axis of reality incomprehensible to mortals.

God: Really, Satan? Another loot QQ thread? Sure you caused enough misery and rage with those things

Satan: Hey man, that wasn't me. I've got the official forums locked down, but can't be fucked with 3rd-party fansites. The ROI is shit

G: Looks like you've got competition, then

S: Not competition, freelancers. That was whole point of that thing with the apple and garden. I'm outsourcing evil, baby!

G: ... to ax-grinding neckbeards? Really? Couldn't you stick with racist billionaires?

S: I like to keep a broad portfolio, and this small-time crap practically runs itself. I'm surprised you haven't interfered

G: Look. It's not my fault so many people think that a flat distribution is the only distribution, and the fix for the Confirmation Bias bug has been scheduled to ship after the next reset.

S: Ha! Now they're talking about us. I guess the 'Stop Bringing Up Religion And Politics In Every Conversation' bug is still being worked on?

    G: Go to hell.

posted a message on Why does enchanting cost more each time?
The enchanting system is fine, and is IMO a nice bit of game design... weapon sockets, not so much. I was surprised when they left things as-is for RoS, but I'm still hopeful that they'll either nerf the hell out of emeralds or just cave in and give us a suitably expensive 'socket this' option.

posted a message on Kadala isn't random at all, how to get loot from her
Meh. Given how trivial it is to make a really good pRNG (hell, for all we know Blizzard is using hardware entropy sources and are generating actual random numbers), and how likely short patterns are in any random sequence (i.e. extremely), not only is there no plausible explanation of why Blizzard would do this, there is also a plausible explanation of why phenomena like this are entirely possible with a p/RNG.

I, other the hand, play the game because it's fun, and have not fallen into the trap of convincing myself that it is a badly-rigged slot machine. Maybe that's the secret to happiness.
